  • If you could choose a company to work at...

No idea, really. Any company who have the finances to go their own way and make the stuff they want to make, as opposed to a triple A licensed snoozefest pushed by men in suits. Valve is always the ultimate goal, even if I'll never make it close to that far. Rockstar is cool too; they gave their entire GTA team a month off after the game shipped (though I'm not sure I could face working on GTA 15: Zimmer Theft)

Yeah I don't think he worked that hard on it.

As much as it is a sandbox and goof-off mod, it has a lot of cool stuff in it that nobody else has done (or at least extended to the degree gmod has).

Yeah but that's been waiting in the wings for quite some time. I suppose this just formalises things. Garry's mod is somewhat different in that he coded pretty much all of it; it was a personal project that was in the right place at the right time and caught people's imaginations.

I totally agree that the whole "Let's make a pretentious studio name and act like we're big time-charlies who want to sell the mod" is totally irritating and fucks up the mod community to a degree, though.

There's nothing like seeing people bail out of your mod and join another without so much as a "goodbye", or other mods attempting to poach your team members... (the latter has happened to us a few times). Potentially putting money on the line just makes it a lot worse.

Additionally: I'm sure development studios who've had to pay for a license will be delighted to see modders being handed them for nothing (albiet for a larger cut of the sales). I wouldn't be surprised if you see modders and small indie developers making more profit on certain projects compared to full studios with large overheads and licensing costs who push out an poorly-received game. Whether that would be justice is another matter!

I don't see all the fuss about it. He worked his balls off making it, so good luck to him.

I'm not really too impressed with valve cashing in on a 'fun' mod (given that the traditional mod stance was that if valve bought it, they'd sell it retail style but also leave it as free to the people who already own a copy of the game on which the mod is based), but I can't blame Garry for it; I'd do the same thing myself if I were in his position.

The only questionable aspect is the fact that Garry took donations and grants donators privileges.. and now all of that will probably be kicked away. This is a reason why I feel people should always think long and hard before giving anything in return for donations (as it puts a different complexion on things, it becomes more like 'buying' under a different name) or indeed taking donations at all. It creates conflicts of interest, expectations of support and it also means, as Garry said, petition online will probably explode as a result of this decision. Of course it's easy for me to say this (regarding donations) though because I'm not in Garry's position and, while I'm not even close to rich (monitor is giving out and I can't afford a new one) I do live fairly comfortably considering I'm a student with a tiny bank loan and no job.

Still though, say you have donated and now you feel you've been jipped, it's only $10.

That's fine, you know what I was going to say. And really theres no arguement for it. But, you could easily extract the Counter-Strike:Source vechiles to be models for Half-Life 2 (Or any other modification).

That's a dodgy area, unfortunately. HL2 no longer ships with CS:S by default, so by repackaging CS:S content you're actually giving out assets that not everybody has access to. It's ok for Gmod or other mods that mount the CS:S .gcf as it ensures that all users MUST have ownership of that content, but separating & repacking it is a different thing altogether.

Whether valve would actually take action against anyone in for it is another matter, but I personally would stray away from doing such a thing just in case.

Wow that is an awesome article. I've used high pass before, but I always end up having to try and restore the colour in a long-winded fashion (to the point of it putting me off using highpass in the first place). That way is a lot faster & easier. Is this edit->fade command some kind of secret society thing 'cause I've never seen it mentioned before in articles or tutorials

    Cheers!

  • Your pros and cons?

    • Defrag
    • April 13, 2006 at 1:18 PM

    Pros:

    -Well-balanced

-Fairly self-aware (downside being cringing at stuff I've done in the past, but it's better than repeating it and being a tit in the future)

    -Dependable

    -Know a bit about everything

-I know my limits well and where they fit in with everything else

    -Can take criticism well

    Cons:

-Don't know enough about any one specific thing I spread myself too thinly.

-I can be a bit bitchy sometimes when I'm pissed off

-Too blunt at times, though I've come a long way in the way that I deal with people.

-Intolerant regarding certain things or people.. but again I've come a long way

-I tend to drop friends when they start to irritate me. I suppose this could be a pro; it stops me turning into a mega-bitch. The plus is that I'm only ever surrounded by people I totally like.

-Sometimes I spend too much time pretending to work on stuff instead of just working.. on stuff. Then I wonder where all the time went and why I didn't just work on the stuff in the first place as the time was spent on it regardless! This is usually personal stuff (Uni etc) as opposed to 'fun' stuff.

-I have a tendancy to mess about with stuff and enjoy it, but then move onto something else before totally finishing it (see models I posted on this forum.. car, head, mig-29, deagle etc. Most of them weren't unwrapped or skinned)

    Could go on all day.

They do something similar in Scotland: DARE

    http://www.daretobedigital.com/home/index.php

Pretty much everyone who gets onto the DARE competition usually end up finding a job pretty easily. The problem is you need a strong team to get accepted to take part, never mind actually make something cool.

The upper rockwork is in the 3d skybox, and the skybox links up in the Flag Room as a continuous piece which makes it tricky to have it (the rock face behind the main base) anywhere other than in a narrow region. I'll definitely rejig it so I have more flexibility. Thanks for the feedback!
