  • Next Gen GTA MMOG??!!

    • ReNo
    • July 1, 2005 at 1:32 PM

The article has been updated saying that Rockstar has completely denied it is anything of theirs, so I guess thats the end of that. An MMO GTA certainly has potential, but I think it would have to be heavily segmented into servers as having too many lunatics running the game's streets would ruin it. Battlefield style 64-128 people games could work, but thousands would just be insane.

Think this is my first time showing something in the WIP forum, and it isn't exactly the most orthodox map to be showing. This is my entry for the Snarkpit HL2 mapping contest, with this year's theme being "surrealism". I've taken a sort of coastal fortress theme, but going for an abstract hexagonal approach using only solid colour textures. I only started this tonight so there isn't much to see just yet, but I'm currently debating whether I should be adding detail or keep it true to its hexagonal charms. Thoughts, comments, suggestions?

I love Idoma - it just "feels" so different to other UT maps, in a sort of crazy mixture of happy bright surroundings, and decrepit old industry. Plays well too - nice simple layout that just "works". Not to say his others aren't good, but thats my favourite.

Mike-0, try renaming your .vmx file to .vmf - its an automatic backup. Its quite possibly corrupted too if the .vmf was, but its worth a check.

What sort of experience level are people going into the camp expected to have? Two weeks seems like a hugely short amount of time for a group of strangers to learn how to develop the component parts of a game and put together anything of significance. Great job for you Daan, no doubt, but I am kinda sceptical about the worth of the course for the people paying to go on it.

Hehe, I do indeed I did a fully top down turn based strategy type project on the playstation a couple of years ago, and everything looked absolutely god awful. Then again, I made the sprites in flash, in an afternoon, so what did I expect!

I don't think I'll ever understand people's fascination with remaking Assault - why do something thats been done dozens of times before? At least you are trying to take it in a different direction so thats a good thing, but even the "I'm fed up with the crappy remakes so I'll make a good one" excuse/justfication is getting old now.

So is this game played from a fixed isometric perspective? I know what you mean about impressing programmers; seems to be far easier than impressing the general gaming public for some reason

I know its not quite the same, but if you guys post decent levels over at the Snarkpit, we're always interested in adding more to our HL2DM server. Keep in mind it's UK based so its not wonderful for anyone further away than mainland Europe, but we have a few US players that frag the place without complaining too much

Ah good old Tim Sweeney. Clever guy to be sure, but not much of a public speaker

Nexus, did you even watch the whole thing? When it zooms out and shows lots of the city, do you seriously think that is unimpressive? Do you think any engine currently on the market could manage that?

I love mapcore for what it is. The fact it isn't that noob friendly (not that its noob NASTY either, it just isn't aimed at them) means its a nice balance against using other forums such as the Snarkpit. The Snarkpit is essentially a midway forum that caters for everyone regardless of skill level, but Mapcore is very much a community made up of experienced members, and you can rely on that in a way you can't rely on most other places.

I get a kick out of writing tutorials, helping out newbie's with their mapping troubles, and giving advice, and the Snarkpit (and other places such as TWHL, Interlopers, etc...) are great for doing so. There we get a shitload of questions asked, maps posted, forum threads, and tutorials written, and it can be a fun distraction to go through all these things and give your thoughts and suggestions. Mapcore, being more small scale, lends itself far more to having a small number of maps recieve a great deal of feedback. If it expands too much it may well see itself become flooded with maps, and this in turn could drop the amount of feedback recieved per map. Its not uncommon to see maps on Snarkpit recieve just one or two (often insignificant) comments, but here its very rare that the comments don't exceed a page or two. Its all too easy to have a community expand and see too many of its new members taking, but not giving, which would be a sad thing to see happen here.

I think Mapcore is growing reasonably though word of mouth, and that is probably the best way for it to go. Having it advertised on PHL or the like will most likely end up in a growth of "fly by night" members - posting their level, taking some feedback, then disappearing.

Does it support DDR though Jynx? If so just buy the fastest you plan on needing in the near future - I'm pretty certain its all backwards compatible and will work at the maximum speed your motherboard/cpu combo can handle.

I just saw Batman Begins last night, and really enjoyed it. Good story, and it was nice to see more history and explanation behind things than the other films bothered with. On the downside, the fight scenes were really rather shit. In most films of ths sort it would be a critical point, but Batman Begins remained a great and enjoyable film despite the fights being far too dark and camera jittery. You could barely make out who was who or what the hell was going on for about 80% of the fights, which tended to make me want them to hurry up and end so we could get back to the other cool parts of the movie.
