Another sequel by people who dont get it.

"What did the first game(s) have?"

    "guns"

"good, so lets just make a game with guns then and it will be a sequel!!!111"

Derailing Hourences/Gloglebag: Don't see this. We still dub all of our shows and everyone I know speaks fluent english.

There are far more people in the nordic countries or countries like Holland that speak English. I have met barely anyone in Germany that could speak english at a decent level, every time I have visited germany. The germans their english is far from good compared to your smaller neighbors.

    Edit:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... population

Germany 56% of the population can speak English

    Sweden 89% (!)

    France 36%

    Holland 87% (!)

    Spain 27%

Yeah countries that have their tv shows in english are usually a whole lot better at speaking english themselves. I think dubbing is absolutely horrible and I never understood why in gods name you would want to dub something....

And the french definitely dont want to learn

And you don't move that easily when having a gf/wife/kids/house/other stuff. Especially not that far.

In general the bigger the home country the more difficult it will be for people to go live in another country. If you grow up in a small country you are much much more familiar with borders, several languages and cultures, etc. I actually think it is enjoyable to switch countries as it keeps things interesting. The paperwork is very annoying though.

It is whacky, but it is our own fault. The industry knew that unless we came up with a system ourselves, the EU would step in. Everyone ignored the issue for years, they made it worse in fact by coming up with copy protection tools that just plain suck. We screwed our own customers, and now we just get the price for that really.

And this likely won't pass anyhow.

That aside I have no clue what to do either.

Edit: I hold down one of the shine things long enough while avoiding fish and shit happened.

I am also with Warby. However up to now we mostly heard about big devs like EA taking actions. I think the real danger can be at the smaller devs. And the worst may yet to come. I know several independent studios who are having trouble signing a new project. Most studios were working on a contract they acquired before this whole crisis thingy took off, and now that that contract is almost completed they may be facing difficult times as they can't easily get a new one.

On the other hand there is also a theory that it will actually improve, as publishers may realize that they will have a gap in their portfolio by 2010 and 2011, as so many projects were dumped, and that they need kickstart new projects very soon.

If you've always dreamed of a carreer in game development, we'll show you just how difficult and gruelling the work really is, in exchange for inordinate amounts of your private life, which will be held hostage, as part of our standard contract.

I hope that wasn't serious because that is incredibly damaging in a job ad.

Nice to see people starting something up in Holland though, and taking the step from mod to game.

Things that have taken less time than Duke Nukem Forever's Development:The Wright brothers designed and flew the first airplane.

he United States' entire program to put a man on the moon, from Kennedy's challenge to the landing.

World War II and the entire Manhattan Project. Yes, even the complete development of the atomic bomb took less time.

Every Unreal, every Unreal Tournament, and every game that has used any of the Unreal engines.

Valve released both Half-Life 1 and 2, with several expansion packs and countless mods for each.

    The entire Halo trilogy.

They didn't made those themselves. There is no excuse for spending 13 years on one title really. That is just gross gross mismanagement.

I am suprised they survived this long. 13 Years on one game? Really? That must have been a hell of a budget.

They could have made a fortune with sequels over those 13 years, instead they didn't even got a single thing out.....

  • Mexico fights swine flu with 'pandemic potential'

    • Hourences
    • April 26, 2009 at 11:17 AM

Don't underestimate it. Sure everyone might have forgotten this in 2 months, or half the world will have died. It is not impossible that a flu virus becomes very deadly and spreads very easily. Don't turn a blind eye on the danger just because "yeah well nothing like that happened in the past 20 years so there is no issue!!!11". Which is exactly why the world as a whole is going to hell really. People don't seem to care unless it is already too late.

In 3 days time it also showed up in 4 states in the USA, possibly in New Zealand, and now possibly in France too. The flu started in Mexico City, a city with 28 000 000 people, of which 7 milion do not have access to up to standard hygiene. The 1918 flu killed more people in 25 weeks than aids has killed on 25 years. 40 percent got contaminated, 5 percent of the world died. 5 percent of the current population means 350 milion dead. Like this variant, the 1918 one too primarily killed young adults (thats us...). Two more flu's popped up since the 1950's, both killed at least 1 milion people in a short amount of time.

Media overhyping it or not, I think it is really bad to feel invicible because we got this thing called a health system. This is mexico, and this is one of the biggest and most dirty cities on this planet. We also got a very international world where this can spread super fast and likely already has. I read a story from someone who works in Mexico City, and two of his colleagues became ill with flu on monday. The doctor sent them back to work because he thought it was just flu... We only know this since 3 days, but the virus has been active for at least a week already.

And we never actually beated bird flu fyi. Bird flu just didn't mutate enough yet. That is the only reason why we managed to contain it so easily, not because we did such a wonderful job really.

  • The Emotional cost of bad reviews

    • Hourences
    • April 23, 2009 at 3:42 PM

It is so easy to review a game (or whatever else) that it attracts many people who have no clue really. You can get a spot as a reviewer on some big local gaming site if you are 16 years old and you still get to influence at the very least a few 1000 people by talking about something you may have no clue about really.

But hey, what can you do. The public is harsh and very unfair and they are not too different from all those random reviews, only their opinion is more hidden and less influential (exceptions aside).

And of course there are also just bad games
