Well while eating people in NS I came up with a great idea, a three part tutorial on how to create a static mesh for a map. In example like a car or something.

We could talk about the style and how do you make it fit for your map. The tutorial would be put in to three parts for concept, modelling and texturing, it would be fun if three separate people did each part of it so that we got some different ways to tacle problems.

Maybe we could get some help from our pros here.

There are alot of people who know their stuff, and rightfully so, they are working in the industry, so like I said, communities are based on sharing, so why don't we put up some tutorials, or long articles about something useful, they could draw people in, just look how much those 3d buzz dudes scammed in with their VTM star system.

So to be good community we need to give people something they want, we could review maps and put up a hall of fame for good maps, and give them tutorials on how to do stuff like static meshes and brushes.

Yeah, well as a rather new member of this forum, sure you have un noob friendly atmosphere if you come in as a noob, no community is based on giving information, well not any good community that is, all big communities are based on sharing, look at 3d buzz and cgtalk they are big as fuck (for the record, I think 3d buzz forum is a pile of turd).

I didn't get any noob unfriendliness since my first post here wasn't "how do I do ultimate leet coolness", I came here to hang around and look at others work, just by reading the threads in the engine section of the forum you can learn a thing or two.

    You dig?

Yeah, koreans don't have that good reputation as reasonable people, I don't remember where I read it, but there are alot of game related death cases due to exhaustion, those kids literally play themselfs dead.

But on to the boring factor of the game, yeah the game itself has become more and more boring as I progress through the game, but I would put it this way, it's 30% of the game and 70% of the friends, I wouldn't touch BF2 with a 40-foot pole if my friends didn't play it, I wouldn't play online nearly as much as I do atm if any of my friends wouldn't play.

BURN YOUR PETS, KILL YOUR HOUSE! IT HAS FINALLY BECOME OFFICIAL!

Now that I have blown some steam, let me get to the point. I know not alot of you give a happy about World of Warcraft or any other MMORPG for that matter, but we are a community of gamers so it would be hyporcisy not to post it here.

Some Blizzard employee going by the name Shane Dabiri, apparently lead producer of WoW posted that Blizz is currently making a expansion pack to their award winning and allaround awesome game World of Warcraft. So now that WoW has about 2 million players and it has broken records in both USA and Europe, they are going to lure in more players and expand the MMORPG, and I believe just to show SOE and their whiny bitch Everquest players and Star Wars sissies (and just few days after they bought the boringly uninteresting Matrix Online).

So, is it big or what?

I agree with Zacker and sensee, a crappy mapper will make any texture look fugly, even the ones that tile beautifully, a good mapper will make use of that texture just in the right place in the right way.

But still, jamin don't ignore the advice just because what I said, good textures can make a good map look super awesome

Game designers should really try the limits of WW2 setting, we have had alot of WW2 RTS game, even more WW2 FPS games and some WW2 flight, tank and naval simulators. Maybe we should try like WW2 themed building game like Simcity and WW2 themed Sims, or maybe WW2 themed racing game.

There is very little variety in WW2 games.

  • Transition 3d Studio Max to Maya

What I have heard, user and learned from Maya is that it has simple polymodelling tools just like Max, and polymodelling is the thing I use since most of my stuff is game models, highest stuff I have ever done is something around 10k polys.

But Maya has very complex shader, rendering and animation tools also, in contrast to Max that really doesn't do those on it's own right, they have specific sets for doing other than modelling (e.g. charater studio for animation and reactor for physics simulation), and rightfully so, if you want a complete package Maya is better since it was done that way, but if you want a efficient modeller, then Max is a good choise, but I'm not looking for different packages for any other reason than that it is good to know many types to tools, since variety is an edge in this industry.

At somepoint I'm going to check out XSI, and I have used littlebit of Lightwave.

Don' get me wrong, Company of Heroes and The Outfit look very nice and Relic is a damn cool company (I just love Homeworld), but I'm getting really, really, really sick of WWII games. An why do they produce two of them? Must be boring for a designer to create the 100th sherman tank and the 101th french farmhouse.

I hear you there buddy, I love WW2 history, I have read hundreds of books and watched thousands of WW2 documents, and I'm not only getting sick of the plethora of WW2 games, I'm also getting sick of the light hearted approach and glamorizing (is that even a word) of the actual happenings, the games portray USA troops as valiant heroes with clean morales and bright white smiles and German soldiers as just regular German soldiers, not Nazis nor do they portray the actions both sides took during the war.

But I must agree with RD too, I have always been a sucker for anykind of action game especially if it is an RTS, regardless of the setting.

And RD I just can't help myself getting so excited about Relic games, it's like cocaine to me.

Many of you might know about Relics next RTS Company of Heroes and their new shooter(?) The Outfit, but I just had to take time and just note how awe inspiring Relics work is, watching the screens and videos of Company (short for company of heroes since CoH is already taken) just blows my mind away, I have played RTS games for all my life and not once I have seen anything like Company.

Few days ago I stumbled on Gamespots screen archive of Company and I had to pick my jaw from the floor, just the sheer detail and style of the models in Company is amazing, Relic has some of the most talented people in the world, no the universe.

But like always, these are just opinions, but I really suggest that you take a look of these.

    German Soldier

    USA Soldier

I just have to say, that if these are the in-game models for an RTS game, damn, I can't even do that good FPS models, and I really dig the textures.

  • Transition 3d Studio Max to Maya

    • Kosmo
    • June 22, 2005 at 8:20 AM

I'm looking in a new direction on my 3d modelling package, I have used 3d Studio for a long long time, from 3d studio max 2.5.

For some reason I have decided that even tho I like the polymodelling tools in 3ds Max I'm going to try something new, the decision was drawn between XSI and Maya. I didn't go with XSI because even if it has the HL2 support, I'm not that impressed with it overall, 3ds Max has been an industry standard like Photoshop for long time here in western game and movie effects industry, but Maya has gained a nice foothold on the japanese markets, though I know most big Japanese developers use XSI, it's used by teams at Namco, Konami, Tecmo and so on, but somehow the little I have used the XSI EXP for HL2 I have not been impressed by it.

Maya seems like a nice combination of solid tools and innovation with minimum hustle. But the problem is that I can't get my currently undone models from 3ds Max to Maya, so is there a converter that can convert from .max or .3ds files to something Maya understands.

    • June 21, 2005 at 7:37 PM

Alan Wake is going to be to to future games what Max Payne was to his own era, it is be the measure of a standard for years to come and Remedy has done it again, they have captured our imagination even before anything specific has been announced of the game.

Now this is what I was talking about in the Blizzard thread, something original and really impressive to do with next-generation graphics and not just the bling bling, and knowing Remedy, they will deliver a great storyline and a game that makes you gasp after every corner.

  • Why I Both Love and Hate Taco Bell

    • Kosmo
    • June 21, 2005 at 1:47 PM

For my past experience on these fast food joints I could open up a chain of fast food restaurants and just take your money and direct you to a real restaurant since those tito bells and tick tacos and Whattahellburgers don't take away my hunger, just my money.

There is one place here that I really like, it's called Street Cafe and I don't recall exactly how much the plate costs but you get a shit load of vegetables and a oven potato and it takes your hunger away like a pistol does to the nosy neighbour.

Besides, I'm not so thrilled about the idea of buying hog anus from a place that has more hygiene violations than Paris Hiltons pussy.
