Neotic I think your map is a really good start but it's got that "early map" syndrome: overscaling and open spaces. It looks and sounds like the map is based on a real place, is that so? This is the usual result of building something to a realistic scale--the result comes out feeling too big and too empty, and filling it in with props never fixes that.

Yeah no shit. Instead of trying to strongarm gamers into buying Vista to play Halo 2 they should give you a free copy if you buy the OS.

Robinson said he received four or five job offers immediately after leaving Sony, and even got a book deal as a result of the article. He has now accepted a new position at an unnamed company in the Santa Monica area - but while Robinson is optimistic about the future, he has clearly learned a lesson from his experience.

At least everybody's hiring because it takes so damn many people to make games these days

I really wish I could tell you guys everything I knew.

These things are shocking but they are really not that surprising. The saddest, saddest fact is that he was actually voted in for another term. That speaks to some deplorable truths about the American people.

Posty I agree with your position in this thread. You're repeatedly bringing up propriety though, so somebody's got to do it:

I'd rather not derail this into another Mods and Professionalism thread but I really really dislike the use of terms like "hiring" and "jobs"--come on, it's a mod. You make it for fun. There is no money involved. Don't be disingenuous.

How is SoW going? I played the first Source release, how's it been coming along?

  • So are video games art?

    • ginsengavenger
    • January 27, 2006 at 6:43 AM

Games can be compelling but they are not art. In fact I feel it's disingenuous even to label all game artists as "artists" but it's the easiest term to describe them so it has stuck.

"Art" is a term that is thrown around cheaply and loosely. I don't have a good definition of art. It's easy to develop a definition that easily encompasses games. But games are toys. Toys are crafted and there is nothing wrong with taking great pride in oneself for being a skilled craftsman.

There are sometimes games which evoke something deep inside me, games which in their total vision and execution are so cohesive and gripping and subtle that I will say they border on art.
