  • The beginning of the end for 35mm?

    • ginsengavenger
    • January 12, 2006 at 4:46 PM

TBH I think the beginning of the end for 35mm was a long time ago when professionals began using digital cameras in steadily increasing numbers and the general populace flocked to small digicams in droves. Independent camera shops whose bread and butter was developing film rolls, they've been going under and dropping like flies for years. Kodak stopped investing in new film R&D years ago.

There will always be a place for film though, its tail will be long and strong indeed. Vinyl records are still going strong with the enthusiast set, eh?

  • Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD

I'm not really "for" HD-DVD so much as I'm against Sony proprietary formats. They keep trying and trying but they haven't actually won over a dominant market share with any of them have they?

I think you can do a lot more with the dam itself; look at the pic Bic posted, the top of it and the lighting is so much more dramatic. just copy that and it'll be a lot better

meh, I didn't mean the hold-still-while-we-tell-you-the-plot stuff, but the sudden appearances/disappearances of the girl and Fettel, the scenes with the fat lab tech were solid, so on.

Oh yeah, the multiplayer: sucky disappointment. Why didn't they include slowmo in MP. TS is a perfect case for how it can work. They had a long time to work on it too since the early showings when they got a lot of criticism for it... why? Meh. I'd rather have a so-so attempt at it in a retail game than another boring deathmatch that I'll play twice and uninstall.

What are you talking about? Slo-Mo is an integral part of FEAR's MP.

i played on a bunch of servers and nothing had it on, i figured it just wasn't in (

Well the thing is the quick release is the important part. I've never seen a mini tripod with a quick release. Even if the tripod is anchored in exactly the same spot if you're screwing the camera in every time it's going to be skewed and inconsistent. Depends on the tripod, you can probably eyeball it and get it pretty close but your final product will be jittery unless you painstakingly align and crop each shot.

Also I'd use something mechanical to anchor the tripod, tape probably won't stay stuck too well in the winter

Anyways, what was good about the scripted sequences?

Really enjoyed the game, intense to the end. I found the ending satisfying. The pacing and scripting really really shine all the way through.

The major complaint about the game has been the level design--I would have appreciated more diverse environments too but what they put forward was pretty good IMO. The team has shown they can do a variety of beautiful and exotic settings with the NOLF games, so it's clear that it was a deliberate choice to limit the number and diversity of environments. In fact FEAR's seemingly bland levels really brought focus to the core of the game which was the suspense and the firefights. This isn't a game where they want you to stop and stare at the scenery, they want you to keep moving and maintain the pace of the game.

Especially considering there were only like three or four major settings they did a remarkable job of recycling art in interesting ways--the areas didn't feel overly repetetive and didn't get dull. Probably a similar or greater amount of art time was spent on Doom 3 which was so poorly paced and repetetive it was a chore to play.

TBH Monolith is one of the top companies I'd like to work for based on their body of work.

  • James Bond?

Anything with Connery for the win. I think it was in Goldfinger:

    "You expect me to talk?"

"No, Mr. Bond--I expect you to die!"

    Classic.

The tits are better but in the middle space between them they bulge a bit and form those dark creases as if they're being squashed which looks quite odd to me. It will probably be alright if she'll be wearing a bikini or something tight across the chest.

If you're going the 'port route see if you can't do something creative to prevent teleporter camping

I'm digging the brushwork, would be perfect as a fortress forever map imo.

  • So how is this with work visa for the USA?

Does the company have experience with getting visas for people? That's probably the first thing you should ask.

A deadline does wonders for me. There are times when you simply have to hunker down and work on something even if you don't want to and what you're doing is crap; something good will usually come of it.
