Is it true that salaries at Ubi are lower compared to similar companies?

I mean, I don't want to hear any digits from klein or IR, just the overall impression.

Anyway I always wondered where the better working conditions + salary are. Big publisher in-house teams, or small but high-profile, independent teams?

That non-compete clause definitely sucks ass. Of course Ubi used it only in obviously hostile cases so far, but I guess I would still feel a bit uncomfortable as an employee.

easy ferret, let's just say curman shares the photos he paid for, with his friends.

no seriously, you're kinda right. environment-textures.com is a great site and should be rewarded for their efforts. I'm definetely gonna sign up for the service later, because the amout of photos seems to be increasing constantly and it's surely a good thing signing up every year or so, to keep the collection up to date.

And for those who feel uncomfortable using curmans offer, here's a list of sites that provide a similar service, but for free:

    http://www.imageafter.com

    http://www.morguefile.com

    http://www.sxc.hu

    http://www.flickr.com

    http://www.webshots.com

By the way, here's another Firefox plugin that lets you automatically save all picture of all open tabs: http://magpie.lockfile.org/

(I guess all these plugins were built to make porn gallery downloading easier... )

    Thanks a lot curman!

I noticed that the photos open in a popup window and when you click on another picture it opens up in the same window. So here's a little trick how to make downloading pictures more comfortable:

First you need this Firefox extension: https://addons.mozilla.org/extensions/m ... on=firefox

Now you can access some advanced preferences for tabbed browsing. There you just need to set that all javascript popups should be opened in the current window.

All the pictures will now open in a new tab instead of a popup. This makes it way more convenient to steal them all

I just sent you a friendly pm

Btw, is there any way to batch save the pictures? Or maybe someone has already downloaded all the stuff and is willing to share it?

no I meant Friechamp (he's german, right?)

btw the best way to become US resident is marry an american chick , back 2 topic...

heh, just mean you might get noticed as this is probably the most detailed custom map project out there . Valve is probably going to see this somehow but i'm not saying they will come and get you

klein is german. no way for non US resident to get a work visa.

but I'm sure he will receive sooner or later some job offers from european studios. good luck

    Hourences

I just checked your portfolio page - pretty stunning maps and also your career is quite impressive.

You worked for Epic? Have you actually worked at the headquarters in the USA or was it freelance work via internet? Tell me a little bit about your experience

I'd be glad if those people who already work for the game industry could answer this question: is that article completely true?

is it really like being a workhorse for some unqualified art director and just being "the-guy-who-makes-concrete-textures" or something like that? how much creativity is left in your work as a professional artist?

I'm eager to know more about your work. what is the working atmosphere like? is it more like a big family, or a "big boss hierarchy"? what about those so-called crunch times, are they really that tough?

On the other hand, it's probably the parents fault and they kinda deserve the monster they created.

Obviously you havent been paying attention to Rare the last couple of years if you thought that. However I must confess that I had a slight hope that they could pull out something good.

hmm I heard that a lot of people left the company after Microsoft acquired it. Where did all these guys go to? There must have been a lot of talented people working there.

Kameo: The elemtal power(or what the name is) It looks soo coool, but i ended up with Call of Duty2 witch i think its rly good, i like running for life with your thompson while enemy flag cannons shoots all around you

    I.N.T.E.N.C.E

Kameo is definitely a cool game, as well as Perfect Dark Zero. But I'm still a bit disappointed, because I expected groundbreaking games from Rare like in the good old N64 days.

COD2 is also available on PC and it looks just the same.

Don't get me wrong, 360 is a fine console but for someone who already owns a good PC, there are few reasons to actually buy the xbox.

If I had enough free time and money to spare I definitely would buy the box, but at the moment I rather wait for better games or the PS3 (or maybe Nintendo Revolution).

name one cool game that makes it worth buying

    word!

I mean half of the games are also available on PC (if you have a good GPU/CPU you can even enjoy the same quality of graphics) and the rest is just ok.

There are no exclusive uber games, that make me wanna buy that console. Even the Gamecube has more appealing gamecube-only games atm.

the shaded 3d view is an old feature. worldcraft had that too.

the ability to move vertexes in 3d view is kinda useless without a gizmo.

the new model viewer is ok, but now it's harder to find a model due the lack of thumbnails.

nice update but I'm not excited...

I hope those round edges are func_details. Also use smoothgroups.

There's another reason why console is more popular than pc: the price

I mean a top graphics card costs more than two x-boxes. you need also a fast cpu, a shitload of ram, a big harddrive, and more...

Valve should burn in hell for their model compiling system. Also creating textures without 3th-party tools is a pain in the ass.

When I create maps I want to focus on design and gameplay and not spend a shitload of my precious free time on such issues. Of course Erik Johnson has a point when he talks about, how mod teams try to act like pros, but blaming the community for the lack of mods is just wrong. And of course "next-gen" stuff like normal mapping requires more knowledge, but I still see many ways how to improve the workflow. I hope UE3 is going to be a step in the right direction.

But what's with the detailsprites.vmt, how can you replace the original one without getting problems in other maps?

to not _cheat_ in other maps you shall incule those two files later in your final bsp file. so the engine will load your textures only if you're playing the level they were made for.

maybe it's a stupid question, but how can you include them in the bsp file? i don't get it.

also i don't really understand how the detail.vbsp works. i thought there's only one detail.vbsp file for the entire game. so if you give your map to someone else you need to give him your modified detail.vbsp as well or else he would have a map without grass. right?

but what if this person gets another custom map from someone else + another modified detail.vbsp (which overwrites yours) - your map would be without grass...

i never worked with detail.vbsp before, so maybe i misunderstood the issue.

/by the way the wall looks great, but again ingame it's going to suffer from source's bad lighting system.

tell me, how did you place those grass and plant models / sprites? did you make it by hand or did you change the detail.vbsp or something like this?
