It's not so much that I care he's charging money for a mod, it's just that this sets a really stupid precedent. Now every mod that think's they're tough shit is going to start trying to charge. Which means you're going to have more 15 year old mod leaders trying to screw people over for $200 bucks.

God I miss the days when mods were made for fun. I wish more of those 15 year old mod leaders understood that mod != retail.

I agree with the degree part. I'm going to uni for a Computer Science degree. I figured if I want to get into the game industry, everyone is looking for programmers. I'm trying to focus on Event Driven and Graphics programming . Granted I can do all kinds of main stream programming like databases and software engineering, but graphics is the most interesting.

I'm a designer at heart, but after working for about 3 years as a web designer, I'm just getting sick of people changing my work because they think it looks better their way, or they think it doesnt fit. You dont really have that problem with programming, at least in my experience. If your program is efficient and gets the results needed, they dont care how its written. The art of programming is in the elegance of the code, and thats not what publishers care about. Sure, other programmers might, but thats comparable to a group of artists working together; the understanding that they have with each other.

Figure if I can get into a game dev with a programming gig, I could work with that until I either got bored with it, or found something more interesting to do (like go for a doctorate in CS or go to film school).

Found another one on slashdot that I found kinda interesting. Looks at the whole dead-end career and all that stress stuff in the game dev world.

    From: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/40/23

    Quote

"Jason Della Rocca, the executive director of the International Game Developers Association (IGDA), looks at the big picture of the grim, dead-end careers of game developers. From the article: 'More fundamental is the notion that immature practices and extreme working conditions are bankrupting the industry's passion - the love for creating games that drives developers to be developers. When the average career length of the game development workforce is just over five years and over 50% of developers admit they don't plan to hang around for more than 10, we have a problem. How can an industry truly grow, and an art form evolve, if everyone is gone by the time they hit 30?'"

I'm sure its mostly the general EA principal about overworked game devs that have to bow down to the publishers (and Wal-Mart). What about all you mapcorians that work pro? How long do you guys see yourself sticking around the pro game biz? Forever? One more title? As long as possible? I mean I'm sure you hear this kinda crap all the time from online articles and its been discussed to death, but whatever. Just thought it was intersting.

    Cool.

Honest question, zilla: Doesn't working on the same franchise of games in the same time period in the same war get kinda dull after awhile? I mean I understand that the work would become more efficient as the sequals go on, but I'd imagine that it would also get kinda boring and repeditive after a while.

Saw this on slashdot. Pretty interesting: http://www.escapistmagazine.com/issue/40/11

The Slashdot page about it: http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?si ... 5&from=rss

    From the Slashdot summary

    Quote

"That Wal-Mart smiley face is looking pretty evil now that Allen Varney has explained how much influence they have on virtually every modern game: 'Publisher sales reps inform Wal-Mart buyers of games in development; the games' subjects, titles, artwork and packaging are vetted and sometimes vetoed by Wal-Mart. If Wal-Mart tells a top-end publisher it won't carry a certain game, the publisher kills that game. In short, every triple-A game sold at retail in North America is managed start to finish, top to bottom, with the publisher's gaze fixed squarely on Wal-Mart, and no other."'

Its not suprising if this is true. I just didnt think that Wal-Mart sales make-or-break the game revenue. I mean I knew Wal-Mart was big, but I didnt think it was that big.

    discuss?

I want to retire to Alaska, because I love snow, theres plenty of Huskies, and nobody gives a shit about it. I wouldnt want to live there while I'm working, because I cant imagine there would be plenty of employment opportunities for a web designer or programmer.

I think the biggest difference with Europe and the US is that here its not all about the money

Thats the primary reason why I want to leave. The RIAA wouldnt be sueing all their consumers if it wasnt about the money. The RIAA made about $100 million last year from lawsuits alone. I'm sick of everything being about the money. Thats why I try to release all my work as open source (problem is, I just need to finish something so I can release it  )

I live in Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA atm. I guess my above posts sounded a little harsh towards the US. I really just want to leave to see what else it out there in terms of "freedom". The way the politics in the US seems to be heading these days, Americans seem to have less and less freedom every day. The mentality seems to be "sue everyone because you can". I've almost been sued twice for defamation when telling a joke that some people just cant take because they're too "sensitive".

Also the increase in surviellence around the US these days, what with Bush approving the use of UAVs over anywhere in the US, the country seems to be heading the way of Orwell's 1984. I would really like to see IBM release there new hardware encryption processor that has no back door, but the NSA will never let that get anywhere near the public until a back door is put in.

I could just be young and stupid, but I just feel uncomfortable doing everything these days. I even feel uncomfortable opening up a file-sharing program to download linux distributions. I'm not trying to start a whole "THE US SUCKS" kinda thing. There are some good things about the US, but everything seems to be leaning towards the worse and worse.

But this isnt the political forum, so I wont drab on about it, plus this whole moving to Canada thing is probably just all talk on my part anyway. I still want to get a dual citizenship, so that way I can at least see what living in another country is like. I might hate it, I might love it, but I wont know until I do it.

Sorry to mods for the political sounding post. I hope I didnt just turn this thread into a political debate.

Looks good because its different. Maybe its just your resolution and quality settings, but the textures look very sub-par in terms of quality. I kinda wanna see some screen shots at full quality, even if yiou dont run the game that high (aa, as, shadows, the works). The world looks nice, but it looks a tad under par (again, could just be the settings).

Looks nice, though! Post higher quality screens.
