has anyone been able to get a custom .3ds working in this? http://dee.cz/rrb/

they seem to be using meshes and a camera. i'm guessing my problem is in materials somewhere. i'm using theirs, but so far no luck.

lol wonderful work anyway Adam, even if this thread is starting to turn into a source engine discussion. if you can stand the transition, you should try working in hammer instead and making a full-blown map. you would obviously be able to make your own textures/props, and that would be a very good thing.

I dare you to compile this for Source

wouldn't the lighting be crap though? since it's basically going to be one big model, it'll be taking lighting from either origin or vertex-based. i suppose you could light it in max and bake it into the textures.

I think it looks great. I don't mind the ambient lighting either. I think we put too much emphasis on contrasted lighting and forget that sometimes ambient lighting is easier to look at. The one thing i did notice about it though, is that the pipe up there is not quite lit correctly. the whole thing is rather bright. Darkening it up by moving the light origin is probably all you need.

i actually prefer the picture at the top. I think the coloring is better, though I do see what you are talking about with the shadows. I also think you should but a flagpole in, even if it's not that one.

I think the tiles look just fine. Dirtied might be more real, but that is not necesarily the goal. Perhaps realistic with a hint of fantasy mixed in? looking nice shalgy

it's really cool anyway, and I just started getting back into it. It's a flash Ninja game. really simple, really fun, great for hours of time wasting, and really hard in some of the last levels.

add the red light back in, but don't make it 100% saturated. try 150 75 75 or something. just so it's not overpowering. and i'd also make the fog distance further, but keep the near distance. it should be very very gradual. frickin awesome btw. I think i remember seeing this a long time ago on hl2w

thanks guys. Those are some of my best pics to date imo. For those who didn't go to my DA, the tree is in the middle of a parking lot. The reason it looks so great is because there was a light litterally right above it. I set up my tripod underneath and lay down on the ground and took the shot that way. The light was yellow, and the tree leaves were yellow to begin with, which gave a really great yellow/gold effect.

actually, i agree with rick. I think FMPONE was acting rather defensive and didn't need to.

aside from that, I think the map looks beautiful and makes me want winter to come that much sooner. I don't have DoD:S either, but I'd check it out if i did.

football uniforms/protection always make people look larger than they truely are. same with professionals. as for the kids arm, I'm pretty sure it's his wrist, but I think he broke something in that area. maybe a few things.

i wound up going with four. Some friends were over last night, and one of them made a good point. Mike said 1 was best, and his girlfriend said she thought I should submit 4 because of the very reason mike said #1. Most people expect the category "sports" to be action, but the category said nothing specifically about action. So most people will submit something with action or expect it, but this one will be different, and therefore stand out more. I think it's a more artistic shot anyway.

I'm trying to decide which of these is best, but I'm having a difficult time of it. It's for a small competition between friends, and the category is "Sports" - nothing else. if you could vote for one, i'd appreciate it.

just some kids at a city junior sports football game.

    my first response: "OOooo"

you must have a pretty long macro lens to get that close to the butterfly/moth and a fly. great shots though. i love the color and clarity. very nice. the best shots are 1 5 and 6 i think. the last one.. not so much. too busy. what F-stop was it? could you have gone wider? if you could, you should have. anything to blur the background a little more. the leaves just make it too busy and draw attention away from your subject.

yes all canon frames i've used until yet (eos 300, 350 and 400 and eos 300d and 350d) felt very good. i am using 350d but i just use an standard sigma 18-50 1:3.5-5.6 - i am going to buy "makro rings" whose increase the distance between camera and lenses - supposed to help getting a better makro

Well, those "makro rings" (actually spelled macro), are really called extention tubes. And yes, they do increase the minimum focusing distance of a lens, but it comes with a price. Your lens will no longer focus to infinity, and the image quality won't be the same as a true macro lens. That said, they are very cheap compared to most lenses and work rather well. i've been thinking about buying a 12mm extention tube for my 50mm 1.4.I've got to dissagree with you on the 350D feeling good in your hand though. I went to a camera store and asked to use a 20D and a 350D (was trying to chose between them). I used the 20D for about 5 minutes, then picked up the 350D and set it right back down vowing never to buy one. I don't mean to say it takes bad pictures. It has the same sensor as a 20D, but it doesn't feel good in my hands at all. There are other things, but it's a nice camera overall. I have two friends who bought them. They're a lot lighter than a 20D too, due to all the plastic.

I voted for 3. Would have been even cooler if you didn't have that building in the frame to the left.

Really? I thought it looked better with it. Well, hardly matters. I couldn't have had the same framing without that part of the building. the right edge of the frame is about half a foot from the end of the building.
