we had 2 forms of data collecting in Nexuiz, one was a heatmap generator that wasn't a heatmap per say, but it actually put actors in the level on an invisible layer that showed where a person killed someone/someone died - as well as a line showing their line of sight (blue for attacker, red for dead guy with a blue line between).

we also had the insane amount of stats pushed after every single match for nexuiz too (i think we push over 250 every match?).

the problem we ran into (and won't be something that is fixable because it'd require an entire rewrite) is the server queries... it messed up our database load pretty damn bad.

Another problem we had was, even though the data is super awesome to look at, we just didn't have the people to really process it and implement it - towards the end of Nexuiz i was the only designer on the project and just didn't have the time to focus on that information.

Well polished tools like this are super awesome. I've been eyeballing RAD's telemetry collection tool as well - but heatmaps, to me, only go so far. You can't tell gameplay 100% from a top down view - especially in an FPS.

Isn't the only reason for the Sony headset being so much better that they used more expensive technology? Or are there any design decisions that makes the Sony headset inherently better?

What I'm basically interpreting from your post is that someone other than Oculus will offer a similar priced product, but that is vastly superior for some reason. I haven't tried either yet and I'm not really familiar with VR or the difference between the headsets (other than resolution/performance etc.).

I think its mostly a matter of supply+demand and analyzing the market. Sony probably marked theres up so high because of limited production and there isn't any footing in the market so they can really make whatever price they want.

if they gauge major consumer interest at the price point oculus rift is trying to offer, i'm sure they could get something of done of better quality.

i really cannot stand the fish eye lenses. They make me really sick. There needs to be actual peripheral monitors made within the headset, no faked through a shader....

hate being the guy who always brings this up every time the oculus rift used, but to be honest i'm jaded.

I have the rift sitting in my room collecting dust atm, because this thing just blows it out of the water. I tried it at GDC... sure its not as cheap and 'consumer grade' as the rift is, especially with the Sony headset, but it's just proof that someone's going to come around and probably bury oculus rift pretty hard.

Sony's current headset, with a yei adapter (all together about $1,000), is sooooo much better than a oculus rift. None of this fiddling with distorted views, looks way better, feels way better, doesn't induce sickness after a few seconds and way more...

I think the oculus rift is neat, but i've been following stereo 3d, VR, as well as doing some projects with extremely high profile clients regarding VR and... to be frank... all the oculus rift is doing is sparking public interest for a giant to come in and perfect it....

which isn't a bad thing at all.

i'd get rid of that long walkway on the outskirts of A, long stretches like that of "walk forever" aren't really that fun. You may want to just have a bit of one but then cut it into the area sooner.

So today has been interesting so far. headed down to Civic Center Park to experience the largest 420 celebration in the world...

started off cool, smoked some herb, lots of really really gross people though. Like the trailer parks let the gates open here.

    Some panaramics and shots:

    Here's the best part,

shortly after 420 we left to go hang out at IllFonic (a couple of blocks south of Civic Center Park). On our way there, we saw a dead body on the road from a car accident, and i guess there was a shooting at Civic Center Park.

The really interesting thing was, on the way back to my apartment, the cops are arresting some guys at gun point ->

    [Blocked Image: http://imageshack.us/a/img541/42/img20130420173608978.th.jpg]

Come home to read the news... turns out these guys were the suspects in the shooting

" Officers are looking for two suspects. They described the first suspect as a black man who is about 6 feet tall and weighs around 180 pounds. He was wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, black pants and a Carolina blue baseball cap.

The second suspect was described as a black man wearing a black-and-white checkered shirt."

    innnnteresting day so far.... haha!

Nah it's only on PC, its a DX11 only feature. It looks fantastic in Tomb Raider when you have it on... but her hair is in a pony tail, where as Ruby's hair is long all around (hence making new hurdles for us to jump over). It's pretty freaking awesome. I think once this tech is streamlined it will really change a lot. One of my jr artists picked up shave and a haircut, learned it, and made Ruby's hair within 2 weeks. I think if you got comfortable with the toolset, you could really make new hair styles quickly. I don't think we're adding it, but you also have the ability to grow/shrink the length of the hair strands. I think stuff like this would be epic for custom character creation.... and seeing the hair in motion is truly something to behold... it's every single strand of hair, i love it.

At GDC we showcased 30 seconds of the "Project Ruby" tech demo we're working on with AMD and Crytek.

Unfortunately, we couldn't show more because we're still implementing TressFX (the hair technology used in Tomb Raider). The TressFX stuff adds a fuck ton. So we want to show the whole thing with it fully working... right now, the hair being used is a simple mesh (hair planes, not TressFX at all). We were planning on using the traditionally made hair as an option if TressFX took up too many resources... but TressFX isn't bad on performance, so we're able to ditch traditionally made hair. So we never animated it, which is why it doesn't move in the 30 sec bit.

While we're still working on the whole thing, you can see a shaky cam of the 30 seconds at the AMD press event (loool at Carl and Chuck on stage):

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uRKaZZjCdRs

It's not on a bigger screen due to some technical difficulties AMD was having at the Press Event.

I also did a presentation with Sean Tracy, Bill Bilodeau, and Dongsoo Han - the powerpoint for that presentation can be downloaded here: http://developer.amd.com/wordpress/medi…ectPhoenix.ppsx

it has higher resolution images there, my part of the presentation is pages 2-12 - the programming part is more at the end, and highlights TressFX specifically.

anyways, once we're done i'll post the whole thing as well as a link to download the actual tech demo...

we only did 30 seconds, but theres a lot to show in the final one.

    Thanks!
