While that's true, I do wonder just how much overdraw there is from floating polys, and how expensive that shader is to draw. At the most basic level, all he's done is offset the performance cost for the scene from the texture memory onto the processor. While its an impressive demonstration, it isnt black magic.

    agreed, but its still cool

What i want to see is more use of polys and less textures/shaders. Modern engines can chomp up polys like it's no one's business. Shader tech is good, but overdraw and fillrate still suck. Texture memory is definitely larger, so you can get away with an insane amount more.

all of this, of course, depends on your target.

    DEATH TO NORMAL MAPS.

    tbh....

    [Blocked Image: https://migrationtest.mapcore.org/public/style_emoticons/default/mapcore_smilies/emot_shakehead.gif]

but could be cool, i dunno... after working on an MMO, i'm so tired of all of them being the same.... the meetings where someone jumps up and says "WoW does this!"... ugh.

Go back to non-linear, true freedom, exploration driven and a REAL world like Ultima Online.

maybe i'm just being elitist, i dunno

Lighting in Portal 2 is (mostly, as in almost always) a single projected texture and some self illum materials on the side. I'm told Valve doesn't have plans to release this new editor for their other games and I can seriously see why from a purely technical standpoint. Working with instances and a projected texture is one thing, making a TF2 level with this editor is another thing entirely. Also, no one in their right mind would ship a level with this new editor, which uses apparently a constant 64 units grid. You simply need to get lower than that if you're going to art up your portal 2 level to a good quality.

All the same, I think it's probably the single best thing Valve has put out since creating the Mann Co Store. As a tool to build your community, holy crap that is a good move.

Yeah when i was working with it the 64 grid system was kinda bunk, but at the same time it's meant for just easy to use, fun and quick editing. the editing is like making maps for Unreal Engine 2< with subtractive CSG being the mindset. It's really cool because it won't let you create error setups, for example if you have a setup where say... i don't know what its called, but whatever sploodges out that slick stuff, it has to hit a proper surface and can't be like in a doorway... just really dumbed down, think sims editing style.

you also don't place any lights yourself, its all automated.

yeah theres some sort of compiling that it does do, its a REALLY fast compiler... so either they drastically sped things up or figured out a way to pre-produce its final quality.

yeah valve wants devs to get on steam workshop, so they gave me a beta key to look at how they were doing it in portal 2. i don't see why devs with an editor wouldn't want to. its an awesome platform.

no more going through external websites and such to get your maps out there, hoping players see them... makes me happy to think of

Will nexuiz(pc version) have a level editor?

thats the plan, we are going through some issues to make sure the CryENGINE 3 free SDK can't open nexuiz maps, and our editor can't open other versions of the engine either. (right now the free cryengine sdk can open up all of our stuff for the most part). You'd think it'd be an easy fix to watermark the files... but it's turning into hot water. We're working closely with crytek to hopefully get it in. I wanna do a bunch of tutorials too

I was able to play with this quite extensively... its extremely impressive, how intuitive they implemented it and easy it is to use. we're using their implementation of steam workshop for how we're going to implement it in nexuiz... not the level editor tho of course

Some of you know this from my FB, but i'd like to see what the rest of you think.

As part of my initiative to thank the players for putting up with us during our brutal beta (a lot of unexpected problems magically appeared, go figure), i'm allowing players to vote on core design elements and i'm going to try to create a level off of it for them (for free).

    http://forums.nexuiz.com/index.php?/forum/49-polls/

have any of you guys ever done anything similar to this? How was your end result? when the polls are done, i'm going to create 3 Blue Rooms, the blue rooms will be based off the top 3 most voted "flows", then i'll let the players vote on them post launch and commit to production on one (or i may just make all 3 if they really like them all).

I have to play it on all consoles because of this achievement that requires you to kill a member of the illfonic team/kill someone that killed a member of the illfonic team....

PC is definitely my platform of choice, but seeing as the 360 releases in 8 days I'll probably play on that a lot

that first youtube video link has 240 dislikes i bet thats because of the "whaling" part at the end ^^

nah it's because of Xonotic trolls, they purposefully would try to down vote our stuff and talk shit all over our press things for a good while... they seemed to have finally backed off. It was just more so annoying, not really a problem. glad they're gone though. lol

I'll get a copy for sure! How much are you going to charge for it on PC (I assume it's going to be on Steam)?About the YouTube video embed function: here's a thread which explains how to get it right viewtopic.php?f=44&t=15804 :derp:

thanks! the game will be $10 on 360... i can't say how much it will be on PC... but you know.... A=B B+=C A!=C

    Lo guys,

Nexuiz is releasing on the 29th on Xbox 360, and soon on PC\PS3. We're super excited for the studios first release as we've all been working really hard. Seeing as Mapcore is one of my homes (and i talk about it in almost all of my interviews but everyone always ends up editing it out )

I'm wanting to include a level editor with the PC version of Nexuiz... hopefully we can, because that'd be bad ace

Anyways, some of you see my spam all over FB. but you know, I figured i'd post some key videos here! megapost toast.

    Hey guys,

GDC Europe is right around the corner, just curious as to who all is going???

I have an hour long seminar i'm doing at GDCE here - http://schedule.gdceurope.com/session/5 ... _Crytek%29

of course I'd love for anyone from mapcore to hiss at me and occasionally show me their teeth.

I'll only see the first day of gamescom but i'm super excited - this is my first time to go to gdce/gamescom and my second time to leave the states, and i'll be going han solo so meeting up with mapcore people would be cool. anyone around that wants to schedule a meetup since you know the areas?

Crazy that it's been down for this long, really a major issue for them considering that the entire online community is just non-existent on the PS3 right now. Only way it could be worse is if you had to pay for it ala XBL, then they'd really have an ugly mess in their hands.

I just bought Playstation Plus earlier this month :/

but... tbh... My ps3/360 probably gets used for entertainment probably once a month so i'm not messed up about it.
