what if, it's a man in a suit because the production budget was too low?

Thx, well it's shot with a canon 5d mark II and my Zeiss 21mm Distagon, which has incredible micro contrast, so these city shots are bloody sharp. The real magic is done in Lightroom, it's a merged multi exposure shot, 5 of them, to capture the entire dynamic range of the scene. Then it's post processed to hell and back for about 30 mins or so.
I'll get a higher res one up tomorrow

All I remember was being on the IRC channel for years, then after it started to die I registered on the forums

I've had more fun watching people shit themselves playing this - than I do playing most games. So for that alone, I give this game a well deserved

-
I had no idea people would vote, it was a personal challenge and not a competition

I don't think it's fair to have a winner in a whitebox map anyway, and I also think a game like UT - with it's variety of popular maps and modes, that play completely differently, makes judging it a little tricky.
So in my opinion, challenges shouldn't have winners. If we want winners, make it a contest - and then set some more rules.
It was still a very successful challenge, we got 11 very solid levels that could all be taken into further development.

I think, something quite simple with small scope is good, like a mashup of world of warcraft, destiny with a little touch of skyrim would be great.

digging those character designs

this game is not my destiny

I think it was just too little notice, plus we only had voting up for a few hours when they did the stream?
There have been a few streams where they run through community maps in great detail, but you can't expect them to do that every time - usually these streams have a level designer to discuss the maps. This one was more about the Logo and some code updates. Maybe the next stream will show some of our work.
I have no doubt they are excited about our maps, they just need some time to look at them properly.

like a Civilization, a golden age has just begun.

your supposed to get slaves to make it for you ...

if you want to make levels, grab a game like UT4 and whip up some maps, using what ever content you can find. If you like the idea of making a scene pretty, grab a concept/ref pic and start to figure out how build it. Theirs tons of online, free tutorials for both.
What Erratic said, you will have to learn a bit of both, most env artists these days actually started making maps - and the best ones still care about game play, it's more a question of what you get excitement doing - I'm not sure it's particularly useful to make a plan, if your just getting started - chances are it will fall to pieces (hell most game development by pros is a clusterfeck!) just start a level for a game that interests you, then when you have something that your happy with, slap some art in it.
Looking back, I was interested in both visuals and the level design, and to be fair, I've swung back and forward between both in the past, I dunno decade or so. The point really is both are important and complement each other. I'm no artist, but I do make it much easier for artists to work on my designs, which in theory gives me more time refining the experience and less time arguing why it looks shite
A "whitebox" is only useful if it can somehow translate into a real level, meaning proportions, technical limitations are considered and of course it plays well. -
Alright, heres my baby - I did a few tweaks to the map after these screenshots where taken.

looks tight man, would love to play - the health kits of the wall are really interesting, think it shows there's still room for nice little design ideas in the genre.
Perhaps it might be worth brightening up the ambient light, try assigning a cubemap to your skylight if you've not already. If you don't know about this take a look at CTF-Face
