I think one of the big issues with assigning stats and such is that really they played no part in the original games. Sure you could argue that you had more life or hit harder but you could really put all the points in one area and still beat the game. I think what Blizzard is trying to do is get away from the part of the game that really has not real bearing on the outcome of the game.. I mean in many case in Diablo 2 it really did not matter what you put the points in all that mattered was the tree and the items you had and I think they are pushing that really hard in Diablo 3. This being true with everyone getting there own loot drops on the bosses and the skill tree's being pretty customizable compared to the previous game. I mean the barbarian just in one tree along has almost double the amount of skills you can chose from and based on how you combine the trees you get different outcomes in your spells. So I really think this change does not really hurt anything because it really was not being utilized to its full potential in the previous titles.

    Learn to read people:

Wow, great. They're just copying Valve - the bad way. I hope that the single campaigns are long as fuck though. Blizz can go shove it up their asses otherwise.

the singleplayer is pretty long and its pretty different then most RTS singleplayers. We have allowed the player the ability to kind free roam if they want to do but still go down the path.

Completely agree with you there. And if people aren't interested in the single player they won't have any incentive to buy them outside of custom games...Though, I’ve got a friend who is a major Starcraft 2 nut and it sounds like they’re doing some pretty conservative changes to it. The Black Hole ship seemed to be a good example: it used to be a one-only, end-game uber-unit that could destroy a screen irregardless to what was on it, but it's been reduced and reduced until it’s pretty much a normal unit. They seem very scared of messing up the balancing and new units could be a spanner in the works. I’m not saying it won’t happen, but I think we’ll have to wait and see.

while this is true, it was soon found out that uber units just had a hard time fitting into the game, Starcraft did not really have uber units and after much much play testing a lot of those units are just not normal units much like they would have been in Starcraft.

Just a bit weird. Will the engine/features/GUI/whatever change between them too? Or will they all be patched simultaneously as if all one release?

as with previous blizzard games we patch everything to be the same, version engine wise and UI wise, I think the UI and engine will be pretty solid by the time Starcraft 2 comes out, and that any changes you see between release 1 and release 2 etc.. would be patched in all the clients just as we have done with the past games.

something I notice about this map is it just feels like there is too much going on. In some ways it feels like your over doing it. The environment does not seem to shift well from one section of the map to the other, but that is just my opinion.

I must admit I am kinda disappointed that the engine forum has gone away... am I to assume that it now goes into 3D? because it really did not always deal with level design and modeling.

For fucks sake:To be honest, why wouldn't they try and make a new style with the new technology they have to deliver it with. I mean the old games were sprites and therefore I think the only way to deliver the game, in a darker setting, was to use really gray scale/desaturated colors, otherwise it would have looked way too bright and fun loving with the colors they had to choose from. Now they have all of these new graphical features they can implement giving more of a wide spread feel while still keeping it true to diablo. If you are perhaps blind and didn't see the first scene with the barbarian, that was very true to the original game. Your in a dark dungeon fighting hordes of monsters. Blood and limbs flying everywhere. What else do you want? How much more dark can you make that?

All I'm saying is give them a fucking break. They've worked too hard on this game already for them to just say "Well our fans know what's best, because it's not like we haven't made this game in the past, let's just scrap this whole thing and start over." Give them some respect, without these guys you would still be playing your old outdated diablo 2 on old battle.net, which is laggy and not even being maintained anymore. All you've seen is a glimpse of it anyway, this game isn't going to come out for a while, I'm sure theres plenty of potential and suprises to come. Please. Also, just be glad they didn't sell out and turn the game into World of Diablo and change the entire way the game is played.

    /my two cents

(I'm am enjoying a lot of rum right now, but I thought I'd try to give a somewhat respectable rebutle )

We do maintain old battle.net I wrote code not to long ago that fixed several issues, we are just at a point where we are not adding new features and the hardware is running on stuff that's 10 years old.

As far as the crap about the rainbows and blah blah blah... 0.1% of the freaking game folks you guys have seen NOTHING not a damn thing but some demo level that was made to show you we are working on something with this franchise. I think its sad that people have attached themselves to this 15 minutes of gameplay. Its like come on people get a freaking clue, I think we know what we are doing we currently make the #1 MMORPG, we have what most view as the best RTS of all time, as well as one of the best RPG hack and slash games... I do not think we are going to fuck that up, but we are going to use the new technology as much as possible and we are doing things we were just unable to do with diablo/diablo 2. Sure I am a bit biased but I feel the people in charge of Diablo 3 are making the right choice and when you all finally play the game you will agree.

I think with Valve you don't have to be too afraid of it ending up being a shit hole

At least with their release dates for most of their games being unknown you know you have some level of job security... I mean hell robin walker was working on TF2 for like 10+ years.

I thought it was pretty clear... not everyone can say who they work for, as their employer ask them not to be open about it when possible. I think that is reasonable for some people. I do find it sad that people would be asked to do such a thing when its clearly something I think worth sharing atleast within the scope of this site... and I would not say what we have here if flaunting but more a comprised list of people who have been around this site for sometime and would like to mention there accomplishments in the recent years ... of with taylor has been a part of

so I have read over most of the posts to this thread and just laugh at what I am reading. First off Blizzard is not going to change the art direction of Diablo 3, its just not going to happen. What you saw in that demo was less than 1% of the first act of the game. I do not think you can cast judgment based on that as where the art direction of the game has gone. I think one thing we learned through wow and warcraft3 and diablo 2 is that story is important to people and the environment around that story is also important... you have to build up to it and as you progress through it, the world around you picks up that feeling of the story. What you have seen so far warrents the warm look and feel because nothing really horrible has happen yet in the game, your adventure has just started and the evil wraith is few at this point. I can assure you that the game keeps true to the diablo look and feel.

As for some of taylor's comments I agree with him 100%, Blizzard does not make crap... we never have and we never will. We do not believe in releasing stuff that is not complete, that has not been tested and a game we our selves would not play. We still support all our older games, for example we just released a patch for warcraft 3 on monday, which added to the game player created content, we released a patch for diablo 2 last month, we released a starcraft patch several months ago. Some of these games are 10 years old, Battle.net which is over 10 years old, still to this day gets updated with new functionality. We care about the gamers... We did not release starcraft: ghost because it was not going to be an awesome game, we waited 10 years for starcraft 2 because we wanted the time to be right and its going to pay off and I think the same will be for Diablo 3
