The biggest tip is just knowing your camera and how it works. I have a Canon Digital Rebel so my tips might not work well with your camera.
For low light situations, I go manual with the aperture and set it as open as it will go, which would be a smaller number like 2.8 or whatever depending on your lens (lower number means a more open aperture therefore allowing more light into your camera). At the same time I leave the shutter speed set to auto so while I'm controlling the aperture, the camera automatically adjusts the speed to figure out the best exposure. I usually take most of my low light situation pics like this. Sometimes if the lighting is fairly static, I'll pay attention to the average shutter speed the camera seems to like and I'll flip it to full manual and play with the shutter speed.
The only problem with shooting in low light is that most of your pics will be blurry, which can be interesting depending on the subject matter of the picture. For sharp, non-blurry pics, you'd have to use a tripod or prop the camera on something solid. Long exposures are great but you really do need a tripod if you want a clear picture.
I pretty much shoot the same way in bright settings. I usually set the aperture to a standard f/5.6 or something similar and let the camera figure out the shutter speed. I love shooting in sun light because of the natual warm lighting and it's very forgiving of people who shake their cameras while taking pictures.
That's just my generic technique. Hope you get something out of that.

The picture looking into the sun was shot at a 1/2500 sec exposure at f/5.6 and the pool pictures were shot at a 1/15 sec exposure at f/3.5. All shot on a Canon Digital Rebel with the stock lens.

I think I sharpened once before the resize on the pic with the blue butterfly.

Canon Digital Rebel, or 300D if you live in Europe.
All the pics were cropped/resized and stuff like levels and saturation were altered to improve the overall quality. Though with this camera, you don't have to do much.

I went home for the weekend to hang out with the family and took some pictures while I was there. In typical Nate fashion, most of them are close-ups and nature-y. I altered the color a little on the first one to make it look like autumn.

My mom would play Mario, Burgertime, and Bubble Bobble with me and my brother. She'd also play a little King's Quest 6/7 every now and then. My dad didn't play as much as she did.

5 minutes later...
Mom: "Go clean the kitchen."
Me: "Ok."
I come back to the computer 10 minutes later to find my mom on level 3.

I'm currently digging Ayn Rand's The Fountainhead and Atlas Shrugged. Two very good and expertly written books.
If you're into fantasy and are tired of LoTR and WoT, try reading George R. R. Martin's Song of Fire and Ice series. Good stuff.
