    Round two!

Here are some pictures from the second half of my trip. I was in Holland for a week. I stayed in Eindhoven most of the week, then spent a day in Amsterdam before flying home.

Some of these aren't that good in my opinion, but ah well, I got to hang out in Amsterdam.

The first two pictures were taken in Amsterdam just outside the hotel I was staying at.

These next two were taken as I was browsing a market area. Scattered through the center of the city are many random market areas. One was totally devoted to flowers, while others such as this one were basically just flea markets.

This creepy doorway was found in the basement of a monastary near a town called St. Oadenrode. I'm not sure if I spelled that right.

The next four were taken in various places in a small town called Son.

The next three were taken in and around a cathedral in Veghel.

It was pretty cool, though some of the lighting effects were way too over-the-top. The light beams in the church windows come to mind. I didn't really care much for everything being super shiny now. The weapons and the terrain materials close to the water were a little over done.

Valve seems to be trying to play catch up.

He's just got to speak slowly for the old people, which I'm sure makes up the majority of viewers who tune in to this show.

True, and to think about it, even if the time of powerful individuals making something that changes the whole industry it gone, you still can see that most major innovations that have huge impact on the industry come from smaller development studios. Well, I don't know how small something like Epic is but making the most popula engine to date, or might even be the most popular engine ever.

Epic is around 60 people. They usually split into two dev teams (GoW and UT2k7) and I'd guess two or three of the programmers are dedicated R&D engine guys.

As far as Project Offset goes, they have some decent technology, though nothing really different from UE3, but it won't go anywhere unless they start licensing it like crazy or hire at least like 20 more people to the team.

I just wish that if anything will change that it would be in benefit of smaller develoepers and indy developers. It has been long since anything good came out of the major players in the industry.

Maybe the major players just aren't the major players anymore...

Is there some not so hidden parallel between the fact mappers who make levels for Natural Selection can go crazy with scale, reality, etc? Where as cs or dod you're limited by many factors, and as such can't just take carte blanche on creating something insane? All level designers are quake designers at heart I guess.

That's probably the main reason I went Unreal instead of HL/CS. I didn't want to be concerned with scaling my doorways correctly or making sure my oh-so-bland brick walls were realistic enough. Screw that. I want crazy platforms, I want jumpads, I want gameplay spaces that didn't make any sense from a realistic architectural pov.

I'm not to fond of the whole who-can-create-the-most-accurate-yet-boring-office/warehouse/canal-map competitive attitude.

The 360 is where the party's at this round.

And yeah, the 360 is a great place to jump into console gaming. Infact, since I've started playing console games again over the last few months, the controls are not that bad for an fps game. Sure, nothing beats mouse and keyboard, but the console controller is now so comfortable to me. There are actually fps games I'd rather play on console than PC now.

I saw them a couple fo years ago during the Fragility 2.0 tour. A perfect Circle openned and they were great but NIN was probably one of the best performances I've ever seen. The energy from the band was amazing.

Most shadows in games are kinda "faked".There are very few games where shadows are actually (particularly) ray traced, e.g. Doom3

Doom3 doesn't ray-trace. No game does actually. Doom3 uses stencil shadows, which unfortunately means the engine can't use ambient lighting or soft shadows.
