  • Do you enjoy your job in the games industry?

Having kids is dangerous in that sense, because it restricts you heavily. I'd never even consider going into such a relationship before I knew I was where I wanted to be career wise.

That basically means you will never be able to have kids while in the games industry, as its so volatile. if you know you are where you want to be career wise, that is absolutely no guarantee that you are going to stay there for the next 18-20 years. Its not even guaranteed you'll stay there the 9 months you SO is pregnant. In fact, I can actually guarantee that if you are in the games industry you will not work at the same place for 20 years.

Out of curiosity; anyone know anyone that has been in the same job for the same company for 20 years in the games industry?

Theres literally hundreds of studios in norway now.

But noone has any money. And they all create small mobile games (which I dont play).
The closest big swedish game companies are in Gothenburg I believe. And thats too far away...

    I'm not so sure anymore.

And I don't really know why. I'm starting to think that I'm just making up reasons because I've felt like this at my two last employments.

On one side, I should have felt really fortunate to be working at my previous job, because I learned so much from the other two programmers. On another side there was way too much work and you always had to do everything from scratch, which means there was a lot of "reinventing the wheel" going on.

At my current job, I should feel really fortunate to be working there as well, because I am finally being able to learn about working on a game post-launch (and I dont mean just DLC). Stuff like implementing all the stuff we wanted to do, but couldn't do before the release date. Tweaking the funnel. Looking more in depth at monetization. Learning about ads and funnels and everything that is basically not just gameplay or gui programming. On the other hand the pay is shit and my co workers dont work as much as me. My salary now is the same as it was when I got out of the university. So basically my salary has been standing still for many many years. People I went to class with is earning twice as much as me. And work shorter days...

And I am not creating games I want to play. Last I did that was with warby. warby made me believe in his game vision. And I was excited to put in 16 hours a da to make it happen. And lately, I've come to terms with the fact that since I have a responsibility to my wife and two kids, I can't move abroad and get a job at the two places who makes games I want to make. Valve or Blizzard.

But who am I kidding, I could never get a job at valve. Maybe blizzard... But my wife would never let us move.

meh.. If the company I work for now also folds, then I will probably have to make a huge life decision...

I started looking into making a "Settlers of Catan" remake for Dota. "Settlers of Dota"

it would require the ability to click on things tho. I bet there is a script that I could write for that. hmmmm

    Quote from generalvivi

I was trying to find some new scripting entities that would allow you to control :

Items : if players can buy them / use them / if you can just give players all items / certain items. ect.

Heroes: if you can just force all players to be a specific hero with certain abilities.

Can we decompile their maps from the main game? The tutorial maps would be a great starting point.

    Display More

All of the above is possible and should be easy to do.

This guy is streaming the remake of Element TD in dota 2 http://www.twitch.tv/quintinity/

The scripting stuff is a bit limiting because you dont have 100% control of input (keyboard/mouse/etc) and output (camera). Which means that you cant easily map mouse movement to camera movement.

Which means you cant really create a new game with this, like an fps, with new controller schemes. Just maps for Dota 2.

But those maps can still be interesting

it seems its all scripted in lua with c++ as a static back end.

But you also have the events/triggers stuff from source in hammer afaik.

I remember black and white being on of the first critically acclaimed games that made me wonder whether people reviewing games even had a fucking clue. That game would be a perfect early access game today. Some weird half finished thing with reddit-thread inspiring mechanics, like throwing shit at villagers and animal cruelty.

Yeah the actual game mechanics werent that great, but it kind of is the perfect example of a moleyneuxiuys game because you get to chose to be good or evil. and not by some shitty character screen where you select the "good" paladin or the "evil" orc. You get to actually be cruel and thats how you "turn" evil..

Let's recap what has happened with Daenerys this season.

    Quote

    * She took Mereen and basically made the entire nobility (thats left) hate her
    * Her dragons are growing larger and killing sheep

    * She got a lover, Daario, who is a mercenary famous for killing and fucking

    * She unfriended Ser Friendzone

So yeah, pretty boring over all, but important still, and doesn't really deviate much from the book. As you said, it was pretty fucking boring in the books as well and I think they kept all the highlights. Sprinkled in some perfect tits as well.

Theres a couple of more things that are going to happen to the mereen plot, but with only one episode left and so much stuff happening in Westeros at the moment I think they are going to save that for the next season.

I think the next episode will feature

If you power through it, then yes. But this game is less like quake and more like Dear Esther and if you actually play the game and immerse yourself then it should last longer than 1.5 hours.

    Heres what happened, mapcorian wise

I met Sjoerd, complained about his name (ironic, since my name is harder to pronounce). Wasnt funny. Met SKDR, he showed me his really cool looking game for ios. Cant wait to try it myself

The next day I met Sentura and sjonsson at the Green Lion Inn during the Unreal event (free beer). The guys behind the bar had to pull this huge lever to pour a pint and they were working like there was next tomorrow. Anyways, the weather was awesome and we had such an awesome time that I ended up skipping the nordic game gala dinner. (and miss out on Krillbite, a norwegian company, actually winning a prize).

    Heres some pictures

Sentura in the sun, wearing my awesome glasses

Us later at the resturant were we had some chicken and the damn vodka that fucked me up. Sorry for the blurry photo, but thats what happens

I met this girl at Nordic Game who said she'd started as an sound-intern for Rovio in Sweden. And after chatting a bit she also told me about her being in a band and I really fucking liked their songs. You'll notice that they have some retro-games remixes of their songs as well.

And then she told me about what games she has composed and she brought up this game. At the time I could not remember hearing about it (sorry:P) and she played me the main theme music and I loved that shit so I made a note to check out this game later. And what do you know, its hipshots cool retro dungeon crawler.

    Small world

Gonna finally buy this and give it a go now

What Hourences said is spot on.

Its all dependant on what type of game it is (it should be mobile) and what kind of monetization plan you have (it should be free to play with IAP)

And when I say what "type" of game it is, I dont mean what genre or how the camera is controlled. I mean what platform are you going to launch on, is it casual or hard core? easy to understand and easy to play? And when I say what kind of monetization plan you have it is not enough to simply say "f2p with iap". They will ask for key values that you have estimated based on what similar games usually deliver. What kind of social features is in your game? Incentiviced social sharing to lower user acquisition costs etc..

But firstly. Is the game already made? Because if you dont already have a completed game then they probably wont bother listening to you. Or they'll listen and sund super excited and you'll never hear from them again because i'ts too much of a risk backing "ideas"

    Its a sad sad world
