One thing i really love about mapcore is its ability to give really good constructive critics...

try making your normal map a little less strong and noisy
Ive done it already (read edit at the bottom of the post). It worked to some degree, but it didnt really get the look i was after...
Thanks for the tip, its actually really helpful... I havent tried any of those things...
-
thanks

okay, i tried the
Code
Display More"LightmappedGeneric" { "$basetexture" "cvc2/kl_castleWall2_skjalg" "$bumpmap" "cvc2/kl_castleWall2_skjalg_normal" "$surfaceprop" "rock" "$envtint" "[0.1 0.1 0.1]" }But either that doesnt work or it dont have much effect.. I tried searching some forums, but i didnt find anything.. On the developer wiki they mention"$envmaptint", that didnt have any effect either... On hl2world, some guy says that i have to insert "$normalmapalphaenvmapmask" 1 to make my alpha thing to work.
QuoteThe envmap tint can be used to set how much light the surface reflectsIf you want that reflectivity to be determined by an anlpha channel on your normal map texture, use "$normalmapalphaenvmapmask" 1
It didnt have any effect that either... he posted this too as an example;
Code
Display More"LightmappedGeneric" { "$baseTexture" "path_to_texture_dir/your_texture" "$bumpmap" "path_to_texture_dir/your_texture_normal" "$normalmapalphaenvmapmask" 1 "$envmap" "env_cubemap" "$envmapcontrast" 1 "$envmapsaturation" 1.5 "$envmaptint" "[0.4 0.4 0.4]" }But changing my whole vmt code to this didnt have any effect at all... i dont get it..
edit; i made some changes to the normal map, smoothed it out some, less detailed like the other, and it looks waay better now.. But id like to learn how to play around with the settings in that vmt.. anyone got any good tips or tricks for me?

Okay, i started working on another texture... Now, ive done mostly the same thing, seeing as the textures are very similar... Except i get this ugly look to it

The specular is almost completely black, but i still get the glossy effect.. what to do? Or does it look fine to your eyes? Im trying to achieve the look of rocks that dont reflect much.. It shouldnt shine at all (but still cast shadows ofc)..
oh, and please C&C on the other work^^ -
yeah, each level in each box is good, but i think theres missing something at the bottom of each box in a way... not sure what it is tho.. Every box has this orange line at the top of it, but the bottom just dont have anything... But it looks good

Well, here it is...

C & C (I have also update the first post with the updated images of the textures)
edit; I fixed the edged seam on the normal texture (i think, not really sure what you ment). And i shrunk the texture into 512x512, since the rocks were way too big... Its a bit repepitive atm, but i dont really know how to fix that.. not sure if i wanna at this stage either^^

I haven't read the other posts, so excuse me if I'm repeating someone else:Do you have the TGA patch installed? Photoshop 7.00 broke alpha channel support - you need to download the 7.01 patch on the Adobe website to fix that.
You didn't repeat anything, and you helped me alot
thanks
Those two programs will surely help me alot too, h2.. thanks

But what does those two hl2 commands really do? is for replacing textures while running hl2?
edit; ah.. thanks h2
it helped^^ -

Usually when I was studying for exams I'd just turn off the computer completely, take out the power plug and put it away somewhere thats really difficult to get to. Then I'd read away until I thought I really deserved a break. As for remembering, I didnt. Ive always been horrible in these situations where Ive read and just had to remember it, not because I wanted to know the stuff I was reading. So the result was quite sad at most of my exams D:

So you are saying that compared to 20s 30s 40s 50s and the 60s there is absolutely no difference how we treat our pro athletes compared to medical researchers and industry tycoons? You know, back in the day when Paavo Nurmi ran 5 Olympic golds at 1928 Olympics and almost 100 parents named their next child Paavo, or when someone got world record in long jump and it was more important than curing cancer.
okay, only thing that has changed is the fact that we get more news now, not just a newspaper every other week... Except from that, things are pretty much the same.. its not that theres more of the corporate lackeys thing, its more like the news people have all this time to fill, so they throw in some useless info that people might be interested in... (like bill gates doing this and that)
Quote from KosmoIf you just look around the last two years or so, yeah, I'd agree, nothing has changed, but those days when we considered athletes national heroes is long gone, and now Bill Gates, Jorma Ollila and the rest of the brady bunch are the ones who are considered national heroes and get the most news time, they don't have 15minutes, they have a lifetime.
They are not long gone, athletes are still considered national heroes... If you ask a norwegian, any norwegian who Bjorn Daehlie (Bjørn Dæhlie, norwegian cross country ski-hero), you'd get the right answer pretty quick. Alot of the people would probably also mention when he and how many gold/silver medals he's won... To switch it over; Not many girls i know knows who bill gates is.. (just using 'girls' as an example seeing as just 1 out of 100 girls are interested in computers)
Maybe you just think that the corporate thing, and computer stuff is all that is on the news, is because thats the only items you really care about and notice... You wouldnt believe how much sports crap some of my friends manage to fill their days with... Its all about interests.. maybe thats what has changed, we have so many channels and news papers and magazines to choose from, that we can all get the news that we care about... its not just one channel black and white tv anymore... Aside from that, everything is as it always has been since the 17 hundreds..
-
Like you said yourself, you're not a media man^^ It might be waaay different somewhere else, but alot of the guys i call friends are football geeks and watch every game on tv and celebrate alot when their team wins.. Same goes with our nations success' in the OL...
You ask why we're not celebrating that some guy breakes a world record in running 100 meter every day? Its because it doesnt happen every day...
When it does, its always mentioned in the news.. especially if it has something to do with our nation, then its probably the biggest news of the week..
For example, take tour de france, norway had/have a good candidate for first place whateer, i didnt really pay attention, but i noticed that everyone else did.. Alot of people even started riding bicycles because it was becoming "hip"...
What you call news, the whole thing about the corporate assholes is something that has been going on since the dawn of time... Nothing has changed, and if it has it certainly dont have anything to do with computers and technology...

thanks for the tip, only problem is that the whole "what bit type" dialog appears after the save as.. not before

Where can i find this vtf plugin you speak of?
-
okay, sorry about the wrong forum section... cant be that important

Anyways, now that ive finally made it work, i want it too look even better, so i started to redo it, but it still looks too shiny.. so i started reading up on the specular maps and that sorta thing...
Ive googled for some solution and a howto, and the best i could find was a bunch of posts on hl2world... Now, ive figured out how to make one, and that i have to save it in the alpha channel of the normal map...
Now heres my proble, when i try to do "save as.." in photoshop, it wont allow me to save my image as a targa with the alpha channel... why's this?
edit:
Heres something to show what i mean;

yes well, this is kinda embarrasing... I guess this is what happens when you dont completely understand something^^
I thought that when i compiled the .tga to vtf by dragging the vmt ontop of vtex.exe it compiled both the *.tga and *_normal.tga together into one vtf.. Obviously i thought wrong, becase as all of you probably know (that i didnt) is that its actually the vmt's that are sorta like reference files for the editor and engine. And in that file, its referring to the .vtf's...
So basicly, all i had to do was to compile the *_normal.tga files...

Try it without the normal maps and see what happens. Also, your first $surfaceprop is set to a texturename rather than a surface property like "stone" or whatever the proper choice is.
Done, on both accounts... The textures worked fine without the normal map
Quote from EvertHmm I got that a long time ago, I think I just re-saved the TGA for the bump, and then recompiled the texture.
Tried that, didnt work
Quote from generalvivithat usually happens when the file can't find the bumpmap . maybe your missing somthign or misspelling it?
More likely, yes.. but i havent mispelled anything.. So I've probably missed something

I've been struggling with this for hours now, could anyone of you be so kind as to try this yourself
download the .jpg's and make the textures with the vtex using the normal map...Would really appreciate any help^^
