the lighting on my floor at ubisoft sucks... we have these super bright energy saving lights everywhere (you get tons of glare on your screen and green and red spots in your eyes when you look at them)..... most of them have been unscrewed by now I wish we had these lights steppenwolf is talking about.... or just nice little desklamps....would make life so much easier ;o

indeed roger on the damn lights :/ i recently moved towards the window,

in a way its nice but at 3 sharp the sun hits my face o_0

anyways my work space ^^^ look at kleins pics

Visual quality is a smaller factor in engine licensing than you'd think. It really isn't a trump at all. What really matters is the usability of the tools that come with it. Epic has a pretty huge team dedicated to tool management so the editor a slick little package where everything fits nicely into place. I imagine CryTek's stuff is quite a bit less usable and more suited for in house development... hell even Source is like that (.bat file based material creation, YOU FAIL.)

agree, unreal is very "user friendly" source and im sure cry engine is very "hardcore" and judging from the huge amount of studio's that licenced the unreal engine i think for now theyre in the lead, with devteams growing and costs, becoming closer to movie productions, user friendlyness and suport seem to be almost more important than graphics since there's already a good amount of engines that can do similair things to that extend, in the end its always about money anyway

source is not all that easy on the dev. having worked with it i know that shaders are hard to manage, hell even importing a model is a way to long process compaired to other engines

    back on topic,

being a dutch person and having worked on a ww2 game for 4 years if not more, this still makes me eager, even though i do not agree with everything in the game design model of BIA, I do admire the route that has been taken, portraying a imersive story, making it feel realistic while still staying true to what makes an fps, however I have to be critical its the third entry i hope you guys are planning beyond the "flank and manouver" "now with improved AI" cuz frankly afther 2 games it is gettin alitle old

    cant wait to see/hear more!

Im somewhat looking forward to this game, i play bf2 on a daily bases and even though i dont really like the engine, for a number of reasons: movement still doesnt feel right, the load on memory and cpu is insane through out the game, even when trying to find a server, balance in maps and vehicals still is abit off, dare I say claymores completly breaking bf2:sf, because the flags are in "odd" places with only one acess, and ofcourse the huge randomness in hit detection and accuracy of weapons, i've had point blank headshots not kill, and footshots killing almost instantly,

however it still works and i enjoy playing it, its a big leap forward compaired to bf1942 and bf:V,

with this game i have a feeling its going to be a bf:V enjoyable game but not as big as bf2, maybe because theres not enough time inbetween bf2 and bf2142 just like bf:42 and bf:V

personally i would not have mind if thyed milk bf2 for abit longer , couple of more boosters etc, then bring on the next bf fall 2007.

none the less ill buy it and mostlikly enjoy it, and they know it

honestly, the media, the hl1 version was more inpressive then the source, they had a rough trip people leaving for prof reasons, but i agree they should have just finished the hl1 version and be done with it, i dont see this coming out ever, but oviously i hope they prove me wrong, just if you wanna ditch all that good sometimes awsome hl1 mapping please provide us with something wow, to that extend.

In the end you can always ask yourself,

how much faith does a company has in their own product, if they believe they need flashy render movies to sell it.

  • Graphically Misleading Ads

    • February 23, 2006 at 12:19 AM

with in the dutch law system i believe, making comercials that make the product seem nicer then it actually is, is ofcourse illigal, at the same time however they also have this commen sence part were, for instance if its really clear that the product would never be able to do that which is shown and the form of the comercial is more sugestive then real then it is allowed,

to round this down, how apperent is it to people that what activision is showing is not what the product looks like. that is, how apperent is it to the people that see the comercial and are more main stream, im mean its a totally diffrent audience then the people that look for games on websites like gamespot or read game mags, i think there in is were the problem lies, the adience theyre trying to reach with these tv adds are in fact those people that will not easily recognize the "fake" form ingame

its a totally diffrent story if you would have a "fake" trailer on a gamewebsite, but the funny part is they wouldnt do that because the people that go to these websites dont fall for the fake,

so in my believes, showing only fake with no hint of actual gameplay, is unacceptable. for the audience theyre trying to reach and the fact that they wont even try to pull this on game websites says enough that theyre clearly trying to get unaware people to buy theyre product that is nowhere near capable of what theyre showing

personally i think its a compleet sell wagon, forcing people interested in the game without an xBox to buy a new expensive OS that just cant do that much more then your current, halo2 is never going to use dx10 features to the max, and it doesnt have to its just to get people buy the new OS, nice stratigy but its a compleet and utter scame and it kinda pisses me off that companies are doing this.

I just want to mention that the way your recruiting inst very appealing

as in, your only writing what you want/expect, what does the artist gain and also a link to the companies website wouldnt be a bad thing, not to mention that i dont really have a clue what the actual name of the company is premier games?

    just a sugestion, good luck

I am wondering how you industry level designers handle this. For us others it doesn't really matter even if we don't map for several weeks. But what if you are supposed to be mapping 8 hours a day???

I was wondering about that when i first got in the industry, how am i gona manage doing this 8 houres a day and not hit any walls, strange thing is, i dont, , I think the main reasons are:

your working way longer on a map then you would doing it custom, more like several months, so basically your working in the same "theme" which helps because you can really focus on one specifc theme rather then doing a map then having to think about something new and entirly diffrent, for the next map within month or 2.

Also your not on your own doing everything by yourself, you have an art-director artists that creat work, and in my case a leveldesigner around you, that you can consult or get new input or ideas from, its a team efford.

Theres also ofcourse people expect you to do it, you get paid to do it, if a specifc area is set and idea is set even though you've never done it before, you cant say, "mm ive never done this dont really know how to do this so ill do something diffrent", which often results in loss of focus on your map or hitting a wall because it didnt turn out like anything you had in mind.

your working on a game, you see it evolving around you everyone is putting an efford in it, which is highly motivative and stimulating, its the same as working on a mod, except lets face it with mods often theres no progress atall because half the team doesnt feel like doing anything dont have time, or hit "a wall"

often for people in the game industry though, that came from custom comunity, theyll hit a wall instantly or not do any work anymore at home

I think its because, theyre focused at work they cant afford to hit a wall there, or just dont feel like doing anything game related afther 8 houres or more at "work"

all in all, working in the game industry has been awsome sofar, and even though imo the best preperation for the indus. is mod community rather then college, its quit abit diffrent

Um, if you imigrate to the us in an illegal way, are you then allowed to work at a game company? As in honest work?Cause then it might be worth a shot to go to mexico.

no company is going to hire you if you came in an illigal way dude, you ll find yourself on a curb somewhere with a cardboard around your neck "will map for food"

yeh I've been there, valve couldnt get me over to the Usa because of the awsome imigrations law even though valve had done it before, and has some prety good lawyers I did had some experience in the field and some creditted certificates , so i stayed as a contractor. canada isnt so uptight about the visa "yet" took me about 2 weeks to get it (extremly fast)

    best of luck,
