That would explain his visions, but you've still got the two main characters killing each other in different timelines and it’s not like strange events are limited to before he wakes up.

From what I read on the wiki there is another ending if you collect a password on each level and access the computer in the last stage. Then janitors rant some Mafia conspiracy theory nonsense instead of their usual 4th wall "it was just a game lol." I guess this is where the 50 Blessings ties are in the giant post by KoKo5oVaR. It certainly is interesting how the masks could tie into Freud’s Egos and the MC actually did die to the biker and saw some cliché ending in his dying moments... but still inconclusive. I’m guessing it’s going to be annoyingly "open for interpretation."

I finished Hotline Miami. I did not realise this was by Cactus, I would have finished this back when there was a thread about it.

Second to second gameplay is fantastic, though every time it tried to deviate it got a little frustrating, i.e. boss battles,

The surreal story pieces didn't seem to really amount to anything, though. Maybe I'm just stupid.

Have you played any of the Megami Tensei or Nippon Ichi games? I've spent muchos hours on those.

Never played the first one cause I heard it was too linear.

FF XIII-2 has weird balancing though. I find that in most areas I can kill regular monsters with no problem at all (most in under 10 secs lol) but every time I reach a boss I never have high enough level to beat it at first. There's also this really annoying thing that if you take too long in a battle the enemy casts doom and then you have like 1 minute before you die.

Also wish there was a way to know the monsters' levels before going into a new area. It's pretty weird how some areas with high level monsters get unlocked very early in the game where you can get easily raped by even the crappiest mobs.

Yeah, Final Fantasy XIII is extremely linear. Not only are the environments a straight line but the character progression and “press X” battle system are also devoid of any meaningful interactions. It’s like fractal linearity. Urk, I can feel a rant coming on. Must resist.

Final Fantasy XIII-2: If you can look past the annoying characters and story you will find a really fun JRPG. It can be a bit confusing at times leaving it up to you to figure out where to go next but that's a cool thing imo, I was truly craving for some of that old school experience of not having the game telling you what to do the whole time. You rarely get that on nowadays games.

If you like RPGs and googling for character development guides and shit then this game is for you

This is intriguing. I had written off FFXIII-2 because I had the misfortune of playing FFXIII, but your description sounds like they actually did fix a lot of problems. Did you play that and, if so, how would you compare the two?

I've been playing a lot of League of Legends which is one of those new-fanged MOBA games where you and 9 other strangers insult each other for 20 to 40 minutes and then wonder what you're doing with your life.

Well, I trust your judgement, but it looks rather boring in the footage... Whole screens with nothing going on and copy-and-paste obstacles. I'm sure in old Mario games they could be bothered to make tiles for turning pipes too.

Welp. I think I already own two copies of some of these games and Child’s Play, although a worthwhile charity I have given money (and a Gamecube) to multiple times, is predominately aimed towards the US with a few exceptions. I think I will have to pass this time.

Indie Game The Movie was terrible but Team Meat were easily the most tolerable part for their actual passion.

God Is Not Great, God Delusion, A Universe From Nothing, Bad Science and Bad Pharma have made me a right bore to be around. His Dark Materials, Lord of the Rings, Discworld, Hitchhikers, The Culture, etc. are the most likely to have been influential on my supposed work. I have tried to read a few design related books but there is nothing I would recommend.

I agree that is separate, but they’re both part of the recent bi-weekly media outrage that tars the games industry as bigoted pig-dogs. #1reasonwhy is important because, while I don’t think it reflects my experiences in the industry, it does highlight several specific incidents of genuine abuse and appalling behaviour. However, there is no mystery to how individuals like Mr. Truth333 get made when you have shit like the Tomb Raider and girlfriend mode “controversies” firing off constantly as part of the larger "story" of an apparently sexist culture.

I also have never seen anything close to the stories cherry picked from twitter. From my own experience I would say the gender ratio is off not because of discrimination or creeps, but simply because of a range of other factors that have made games and required skills a nerdy male aspiration. This is changing naturally and guilt tripping everyone is possibly counter-productive. This is not to detract from the reported problems, of course.

Personally I’ve never seen a female developer in a position I thought they were undeserving of and two of the best designers I’ve worked with have both been female. And I’ve got a black friend.

Oh, and I’ve been insulted for opposing this before so I’ll do it again for kicks.

    Quote

“Because 'It's too technical' or 'We ran out of time' to make a rig for a playable female character," Ivansmith wrote.[Note: Ivansmith has contacted us to clarify that the origin of his tweet "was in regards to excuses made by publishers in the last few years as to their lack of inclusion of female playable characters (which I find to be a ridiculous excuse, as I pointed out in the comments of your website)."]

Gender Inclusive Game Design: Expanding the Market was full of arguments like this as well, “It’s just changing a model and it makes games more accessible, why don’t all games do this?!”

This is disingenuous. Even if your game isn’t particularly story orientated you’re still going to have to reanimate your most animation-heavy asset and rerecord every gasp and grunt. If your game is story orientated then there is no end to the ramifications from the voice over to your supporting cast. These are workable problems for sure, but they are actual problems.

These arguments are also made with no supporting evidence. While I will agree it does sound advantageous I can think of several things that run counterpoint to it. As far as I’m aware no existing game, film, book, play, etc. has been remade with a gender swapped main character because people cannot relate, in games where people can chose their own gender often players don’t pick their own, and so on. The point is these are not just shot down because the bean counters are sexist.
