    http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2 ... for-USD299

    Quote

Nintendo has announced at an event in New York today that the Wii U will launch in the US on Sunday, November 18, with European consumers having to wait until Friday, November 30. The basic set will be sold for $299 in the US, while a deluxe configuration will be sold for $349.

The Basic SKU will offer a white, 8GB Wii U console, a GamePad, AC adapters, a sensor bar, and an HDMI Cable, while the Deluxe SKU has everything that Basic has but it's in a black color and it bumps up the memory to 32GB. It also comes with charging cradles and a copy of Nintendoland. Moreover, to push digital, Nintendo is including a Deluxe Digital Promotion in the higher-end SKU. This will earn gamers some rebates for downloadable Wii U titles in the eShop as they make purchases.

    And more details and such...

Obviously the Nov 18 US date is to make sure it is available before Black Friday over here (i.e., the day after Thanksgiving for people outside the US who don't already know) so not a huge surprise. I think I heard Japan release is in Dec.

Personally, I am undecided on whether I go for it. I have a 3 yr old now and she's a little young for games still and I might just dust off the old Wii when the time is right, but I admit somehow I am a bit intrigued. That said, $299 is the most expensive Nintendo console launch ever (right?). Having played with it at E3, I would love some super meaty RPG or open world action game (Borderlands 2???) with that tablet controller for an always on map or inventory screen or...something...

Or shit I'll just go back to playing more PC games...

Hmm still haven't seen anything that could convince me into getting one. It's kind of an issue when a Nintendo console's most interesting titles are from 3rd party, none of what Nintendo has shown so far has really impressed or shown off the hardware in the best light. And really, Smartglass and the next Xbox will basically blow this out of the water from the looks of it. Nintendo really needs to step it up and show some genuinely awesome games that utilise the controller.

But all it takes is a Super Mario Galaxy 3, then I'll probably get one just to play that

Pretty sure the Wii was $299 when it was first released.

According to all knowing wikipedia http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wii_launch

But whatever it's only a $50 difference. However, the Gamecube launched at about $199, so that made the Wii "the most expensive Nintendo console since the Gamecube" or something...and now the WiiU is same nominal amount higher.

So in other words, your sentiment is correct in that it isn't necessarily the hugest deal.

Now that I think about it, I think the pack I bought was $299 because it had 2 Wiimotes, a charger stand, and some other stuff thrown in.

On the topic of costs (disclaimer: didn't verify this myself): http://i.imgur.com/ZwxWq.png

Why I believe the Wii U is going to fail or only achieve "moderate success": they are re-entering the red ocean that they had left during the Wii era, while bringing not enough new or better to the already crowded space. The TVii is a complete reverse on their cheap anti-home-entertainment-strategy for the Wii. Why is Nintendo doing this? After disrupting the market, maybe they think they can convert their Wii customer base into (mid-)core gamers and that's why they stick with the "Wii" branding. But I fear that the casual audience has moved on and rather plays on their mobile phones or tablets. And the hardcore gamers? Give me one reason why a hardcore gamer who already owns an XBOX360 or PS3 should leave their gaming communites behind and buy a Wii U.

"Or something" is precisely the problem. Maybe some developer will come up with a genius idea to use that controller in a unique way. Right now it seems the Wii U versions don't bring enough new to the table in comparison to their 360/PS3 counterparts. And are you sure you want to keep switching between TV and the screen on the gamepad to look up your position on the map or access your inventory all the time? Getting rid of the split-screen in 2 player sessions is the biggest benefit I can see right now and that enables some interesting concepts for multiplayer games. But I don't see myself buying a Wii U anytime soon.

Nintendo don’t sell consoles at a loss like Sony and Microsoft.

Third party generally doesn't do very well on a Nintendo consoles.

Smart Glass probably won't get any dedicated games but is much better tech.

I don’t want to play Bayonetta 2 on brick.

    Thoughts.

    So hey, this is out.

Someone somehow got into the Miiverse 'debug mode' which amongst other things includes a list of each region's admins, buttons for deleting them (that don't work), plus a bunch of private forums:

    http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=500411

The one that caught my eye was 'Metal Gear Solid'. What's this? The only sensible things I can think of are either a port of the recent HD re-releases of MGS2 and MGS3 (meh), or a fucking HD re-release of the GameCubes' Twin Snakes. Yes please.

I've been pretty indifferent about the Wii U thus far, knowing that it's destined to go down the same route as its predecessor in terms of third-party support. Then I went into GAME yesterday and saw New Super Mario Bros U on a demo machine.

    For fucks sake.

I was immediately bitten by that Nintendo bug many of us must be familiar with by now. Being the first time I've ever seen a Mario game running in proper honest-to-god HD, I was pretty much floored by how crisp and beautiful it looks. The texture to the world and the sheer craziness of everything took me back to how Yoshi's Island amazed me in similar ways. Some bits literally look like moving paintings, and it's only now it's in HD that the art style of New Mario Bros really gets to shine — I always thought it looked a little sterile and boring in its earlier incarnations, apparently due to a lack of fidelity.

Shitting hell man, this game is great. I'm not sure why this one impresses me so much in comparison to the Wii iteration. Maybe it's because it'd been relatively little time since I'd finished the DS one and so the Wii one felt like too much of a good thing in the same way Ass Creed's 'sequels' have done, or maybe it's because the leap is bigger this time and it feels genuinely fresh over its DS predecessor. Whatever the case, I want this right now and am pretty much prepared to buy a Wii U for the privilege. The fact that they've brought back a Mario World-esque overworld is just the icing on the cake.

So, yeah. Even if the third-party support is as weak as I predict, knowing I'm going to get to indulge in some HD Mario, Zelda, and maybe even Donkey Kong is actually enough for me to sink some dosh into this thing. Shit.

Pity that stupid vocal sound effect continues to permeate most of the music, though.

i didn't even read your last sentence, but yeah that vocal effect is hella annoying. idk, i still think the best mario game was made in the 90s, and that any game made after y2k is an imposter... even though galaxy was quite alright. i never felt that mario needed fidelity given its particular art direction, and honestly the hd whatever does nothing for me. but then again i've never been a graphics person either. anyway gameplay looks like the staple mario gameplay, above average run of the mill platforming with a few new things here and there just so it barely distinguishes itself from previous mario games.

definitely not worth buying into nintendo's new cashcow for. and a new donkey kong would have to own the living shit out of donkey kong country 2, which we all know was the best dk game ever (it probably won't, because RARE doesnt make them games anymore).

i'd love to see a new warioland though, especially one that was similar to warioland 3. that shit was cash.

Well, I trust your judgement, but it looks rather boring in the footage... Whole screens with nothing going on and copy-and-paste obstacles. I'm sure in old Mario games they could be bothered to make tiles for turning pipes too.

Too early to really call (after the Wii I have a hard time counting them out), but it's not looking good for Nintendo, and odds are that it's probably gonna start looking even worse after Sony's event on Wednesday.

A bunch of great games and a price cut well before holidays 2013 might give them a fighting chance, but that doesn't seem very likely right now. Then again, this all feels like the Wii all over, except for the, you know, console not selling well part.

Well, what were they expecting? I think they got spoiled by the cheer numbers of the Wii and NDS they thought that releasing another console would sell just because it reads nintendo on the box. Do NEVER take your customers for stupid, and I think that's what they did here, the WiiU is quite possible the stupidest launch in the history of game consoles, it was doomed to fail since day 1.

With that being said, there's some promising games to be release in future months, the next big mario, zelda, etc. Stil.... how long do they plan to keep recycling the same IP's over and over again? When are they gonna open the doors to proper 3rd party studios?
