That was about as good as discussion gets for an engine whose informational website consisted entirely of 404 errors.

This sounds like it has potential and I'm excited; I'm excited for you. But I would really like to know more.

Edit: Past-tense, website is now functioning properly.

Edit 2: And now it's spitting out 404's again.

I don't quite understand where everyone gets off explaining how important pvp is to an mmo, when really the entire point was how important pvp was to WoW. I heard no such close-minded ramblings when we all collectivly rejoiced at the genius of Spore (which apparently encourages players to fly to other planets and destroy whatever beautiful creation they worked hard on.)

DAoC, Warhammer, Planetside, Eve, Guildwars... there are alot of other MMO games that have been kept alive, or will keep alive, due to a PvP system. I used WoW as an example because it's the most obvious: it has 7 million subscribers and would've been dead without its PvP system - even though it is a complete mess. I'm sorry the example was a case-of-point and therefore much more close-minded than... um, Spores unique PvP system nobody knows anything about?

Though I regret using big words like "needed" now I come back to read my posts after I've had some sleep. I recall Everquest and a variety of MUD's doing quite well without any real PvP emphasis... No, it's not essential, it's just an easy way to keep people hooked. I would continue to add that it is competition and not necessarily actual PvP combat that fuels this, and that it could be incorporated in different ways. But I don't like the way this is going, and it's moot to Waldo/Zaphod's game regardless.

The project, concept and business model sounds interesting, but the site needs to be something other than a giant 404 error for me to find out exactly how much.

Amazing derail about PvP: I think PvP is needed in a MMORPG (or MMO-anything), for various reasons - the main being it gives people something to do. I think WoW was never intended to have such a big PvP aspect, it was more a mini-game that got built on heavily once Blizzard realised their casual-friendly game actually only tailors to hardcore players once you hit the maximum level. I imagine Tigole was too busy making raid instances to care, so someone else developed it to try and stop everyone quitting.

It's PvP system also isn't very good - in fact it's terrible: Bad class balance, even worse item balance, and no World PvP to speak of. Yet people are prepared to play it until they hit High Warlord, a feat that is only capable if you play until you are in a serious state of unhealth. WoW also implemented a 'world pvp' feature not too long ago, which is not completely unlike the one Wacko is decribing. It's simple enough in concept and required no new features to be added to the code. You hand in resources (sand, in a desert) or capture towers and everyone in the area gets a long-duration PvE orientated buff. But his basically boils down to a constant buff to whoever has the largest faction and was not recieved well by the players.

Of course, if this is meant to be educational. An emphasis on blowing each other up might not help its cause.

  • Pirating Games

Ever since I got a job I haven't pirated a single game, not even as a full demo with the bold claim I’ll buy the real thing after I’ve completed it 100% and found that I enjoyed it and might still enjoy it. No really, I will.

However, game-creation software is just too expensive to justify me going out and buying it for individual use. And it’s not intended for individual use, which is why it’s so expensive. It’s intended for professional use by people that know what they’re doing. Because embarrasing things can happen if you use pirated software at a professional level, can't they Climax?

Of course to know what you’ve doing you need to have used the package before on a individual basis. So – in a round about way – I imagine the people who make this software probably expect it to be pirated.

At least that's my twisted logic.

Edit: Oh, aren't you lucky? You can actually apperciate my little in-joke. Clicky.

I recommend Universal Dance because it's the most batshit.

Edit 2: Anyone slapping F5 would've seen some serious fucking around with this post. URL tags are a science.

Hey, you knew I was going to post something stupid. At least it wasn't Burzum, Esoteric or Meshuggah.

Srsly, bands like The Kooks and The Subways have a nice sound for when you're "sad."

The Kooks - There's an automatically playing video link when you load the page up so stop it before fiddling with the player at the top. You Don't Love Me is my recommendation.

The Subways - S'all good. Though Mary and With You are the best ones on the player IMO.

    Yes, My Space. Bite me.

There's only one real entrance from the Terrorist spawn, you'd expect two or three. There's a vent, yes. But that's a vent. I think the only vent I've tollerated is the one in Assault.

TBH I don't think the Back Entrance, Tunnels and texticantread will be used for anything but a Benny Hill style chase for a remaining player.

Ah, the old PC and Console arguments are sprouting up.

    • [*:22fenajh]Most console games, when ported to the PC platform suck ass, and by the same token most PC games converted to a console platform suck ass.
[*:22fenajh]PC and Console games typically handle completely different genres. I’m not going to play a RTS on a console, and I’m sure as hell not going to play something like DMC on a PC.

Given this, I don’t know why these arguments are so common. If the game is coming out on both platforms, get the platform it’s the most fun to play it on. If you think consoles are the spawn of Satan then there is no helping you.

The argument that it will look better put through your top of the range PC doesn’t make up for the gameplay lost. And I find it funny this is usually followed up with “so I can’t justify the cost.” You’ve looked through all the options and brought a top end PC. Money is, presumably, no object.

I brought Silent Hill 2 for the PC after playing on the PS2, I figured with the improved graphics it would just be Silent Hill 2++; But no, it was shit. The only conceivable way I could control the character as well as on the PS2 would be plugging a replica joypad. Not to mention they bundled in some quicksave option. Why, exactly? Oh noes, I’m scared, best hit F5 and run around carefree. What a great feature for a game based around tension.

I’ve also played Command and Conquer: Red Alert on the Playstation and PC. I think you can sum up my opinion based on my experiences with both, with the acronym: LOL.

Awesome film. Looking through my DVD collection I think there's only one contribution I can make:

    Session 9

An asbestos abatement crew wins the bid for an abandoned insane asylum. What should be a straightforward, if rather rushed, job, is complicated by the personal histories of the crew. In particular, Hank is dating Phil's old girlfriend, and Gordon's new baby seems to be unnerving him more than should be expected. Things get more complicated as would-be lawyer Mike plays the tapes from a former patient with multiple personalities, including the mysterious Simon who does not appear until Session 9, and as Hank disappears after finding some old coins.

(Overall it's not that great, but the Fuck You and Lights make it all worth it).

  • Top 10 Video Games Weapon List

    • July 8, 2006 at 12:27 AM

I'm suprized there is no rocket launcher, it's mentioned several times but doesn't actually appear. I'd think it would be obligatory.

I don't remember the name of it, but the weapon in Unreal which has a projectile and an instant beam attack which you could combo together rocked. The nukes in that Strangelove mod are far too obscure, but were equally awesome.

These are mainly the weapons that make you say "oooh, I felt that" or make additional sound effects when you use them, for which the gravity gun is obviously the best and the Railgun should definately feature in there.

I'd say the Remote Mines in Goldeneye were better than the Perfect Dark Turret thingy for innovation, though I doubt they were the first to use it. Perfect Dark also had that homing gun that could automatical target and shoot through walls, which was a contender for the list of worst weapons.

The Halo sword is the most despicably cheap weapon in any game, ever. It doesn't belong in a Top 100 list, never mind Top 10.

I don't understand why it features at all. It's like they wanted to throw in a melee weapon outside of the Chainsaw and it's hard to do melee well in FPS. But this isn't restricted to genre because Mario Kart and "Shoot 'Em Ups" are in it, and there are much more things to slash people to bits with in third person action games, RPG's, etc.

To be honest, I couldn't give a shit if people can or cannot burn flags. But I can't help thinking about this being a rather pointless thing to try and do, anyway. Maybe I'm being flippant, but isn't flag burning usually a sign of defiance?

So isn't this playing into their* hands a bit? "I don't agree with the government so I'm going to burn a flag," "oh no, don't burn a flag, the government doesn't agree with it.

    * Flag burning people, obviously.

I've heard a lot of people going nuts over this, it looks really cool.

Someone mentioned the PS3 and it's tilting controller being a good port for it, but I frankly wasn't paying attention so I don't know if this was just wishful thinking or if it's something that's happening.
