One begins to wonder whether we need to go back to the drawing board with these monsters.

  • Nightwatch stops development on HL version...

I always kind of considered Nightwatch the Duke Nukem Forever of the HL mod community. It came out really strong... and then... kinda... sat there. I vaguely remember when it was first announced that it was supposed to be a HL All-Stars mod where a lot of really creative people would get together and get the thing out in a resonable amount of time. Of course, I really can't look at it too harshly because so many of the level designers left the mod for professional jobs.

I hope the HL2 project works, but it seems like it's going to be one of two scenarios. 1) It's going to look like HL maps with a few props scattered here and there, but it gets released sooner rather than later. 2) The team will decide that's going to look bad and start from scratch, in which case it comes out in a long time.

I wish them the best, but I'm still worried about project leadership.

When we had a game of like 8 friends going through the online campaign levels, it was awesome. Hell, even with only 3 or 4 players it was great.

Today I kind of discovered the dark side: random people on the internet are generally fucking idiots. I wanted to play more campaign mode since it's just so damned fun. First off, joining a game sucks. Most rounds are going to last 10-20 minutes, and when you join a server you're stuck in the lobby instead of observing in the 3D world. So you've either got to find a game that is waiting to start (which is hampered by the lagged server browser) or find a game that is 10+ minutes in, and then sit around. Kind of boring. Then if you manage to get into a game you have to hope the server admin isn't a prick.

One server I was on restarted every single time the guy died, because he didn't want to sit around and let other people finish. I'm fine with that if we get smoked as a crew 2 minutes in. But we were almost finished with one of the very long levels, 20 minutes in. I was alive along with the two guys that formed my little posse, when the server admin stupidly ran into an open square and died. Rather than let us kill the 4 or 5 remaining guys, finish the level, and get us all rank points, he restart the game.

A few matches later, I found a good server with a bunch of guys from NYC (one of them rapped). We were trying a level for the 3rd time, and got pretty far. I told the guy I was next to that I was going to clear an area with some rifle grenades because there were three guys in there that got us last round. So right as I've lined up the shot arc, he runs in the doorway and takes the grenade in the square of the back. Turns out he's hosting the game and kicks me and gives me negative feedback. Fucker.

But on the whole, I love it. The levels are great to look at. The guns have enough customization to them. The co-op with your friends is just crazy good. Seeing your friend dive for cover behind some rocks and then hustling on top of a nearby building to take out his attackers and lay some cover fire for him to get out of there is just awesome.

when I aim my sites dead on some unsuspecting German he should get shot, not miss.

Yeah, the guys in the trenches had the same complaint.

the only thing that i could see working would be if the card essentially had it's own processor to take care of all the packeting.

But as has been said, lag is almost universally in the journey, not the destination.
