Hmmmm, you can spend more for a copy of a movie you already probably own, only this time it's at a lower resolution with no extras and can only be played on one device. Gee, nobody in the industry figured that one out until now?

I'd really like to see a comparison of UMD movie sales vs iTunes movie sales once that feature is unleashed. From the documents leaked at Think Secret, it looks like standard pricing is going to be 9.99-14.99 depending on popularity, with an option to spend more on a HD version that will look better on your monitor or streamed to a TV. I have a feeling it'll kick the UMD's gangly ass back to Japan.

USA sales, yes. Interntaional, no. The Gamecube outsold the x-box worldwide, with the PS2 in a huge lead. Also, the Gamecube hardwarre was the only one that was selling without losing money on it, which looks like the same situation with the Revolution.

Nintendo is just going for a different market, and it will be interesting to see how the Revolution turns out when it comes to that. Their console is probably going to cost somewhere from 200-250 at launch. They've said their games are not going to be in the 50-60 range, so a 45 price tag on games seems reasonable. They've also seemingly embraced a sort of universal compatability mantra. Gamecube games work on the system, you can download old system games. The DS will reportedly be able to cummunicate wirelessly with it. They seem to want to give developers more freedom to work within that framework (as opposed to the PS3 which I've yet to hear a positive thing about as far as the dev kits go).

Also, Nintendo may have very well isolated themselves from the oncoming storm of political backlash for violent and overly sexual videogames. Sure, most of the laws are going to get thrown out on constitutional issues, but some are going to stick. And people like Parent's Television Council and the Institute for Media and the Family tend to hold long grudges and do a good job mobilizing people at boycotts. So when shit really starts to hit the fan (and it will within the next 6 months), Nintendo is going to stand back and say "Hey, we had nothing to do with that. We've been making fun games for all ages for years. We don't have GTA or Postal on our system. So when you're spending your holiday money on a console for little Johnny, be sure to spend your money on good old fashioned Nintendo products, like your parents did for you when you were a kid." Little Johnny might be pissed off for a few minutes that he didn't get an Xbox 360, but then he'll pop in Mario and Zelda and be happy for a good long while.

Western Civilization isn't that far off from this sort of behavior. A hundred years ago we were lynching black people for looking at white people. Two hundred years ago we were burning people for witchcraft. Five hundred years ago we were destroying entire civilizations based upon religious wars.

This isn't a fight over Western vs Eastern ideas. It's a matter of trying to bring in civilizations into a global society. A lot of these countries have been kept down economically and technologically by advancing Western Civs for a long time. Now they're being dragged into this global state, and they haven't really had the interim period to mature their own civilization.

It reminds me a lot of the failure of communism. Communism required that countries move from an agricultural based society to a fully functioning industrial society before moving to communism. But coutnries tried to move directly from agriculture to communism, and it caused a lot of fuck ups. Now we have 18th century societies being given new weapons, the internet, thousands of works of literature and art, and so much mroe all at the same time, and the expectation is they behave like a 21st century society. It just doesn't work.

Today, we went to go look at flowers? Why? Because it was sunny, and flowers are pretty.

Went on a music binge the alst few days:

Arctic Monkeys - I'm happy with this, but I feel like it might grow old quickly (cough M.I.A. cough). But it does make good driving music. All of their songs seem to blur too much into each other.

Guillemots - Much happier with this. They've got some really good musicla arrangemetns to back up their lyrics. Plus, busting out a jazz saxaphone always makes me happy.

KT Turnstall - I like female singer songwriters, thus I like this. No I don't think that makes me gay. Dressing in all black and wearing mascara before going to a concert to run around and bounce off other guys on the other hand... But I'm getting off point. For those of you in your 20s that need some good female friendly music, look no further.

Flaming Lips - At War With The Mystics - Hoooooooly Shit! I love the Flaming Lips, and this album makes me happy on so many levels. The Pink Robots have been subdued. Now it's all out war against the magicians.
