also I would not reccomend using the original texture at all in the new ones, I keep seeing some with the original scaled up and overlayed in the new one. Makes it look blurry still.

my only critique is that maybe there should be a sharper definition between the frame and the lenses. Looks pretty cool though.

It's not like it's a stupid thing for me to say with every other engine in existence not doing it and valve even realising videos of them making bump/normal maps. There's no need to be a twat about it.

That wasn't meant as a hostile comment to anyone, I was just backing up why anyone should consider my view on the matter. Sorry if you took it the wrong way.

Anyway, almost all modern engines have this increase in texture resolution, UT, UT2k4, UT3, Source, Painkiller, Max Payne, etc. It's a pretty standard visual requirement, unless you are going for a different look (dewm 3)

The reason the hl2 screenshots look better than the hl1 screenshots is becuase there is 4x the texture resolution. This is the biggest graphical improvement over hl1. The defualt texture resolution in hammer for source is .25. There are not bump-maps on most textures in the game, I would guess only on around 25-30% of them, where it would be very noticeable.

But what do I know, I have only been working with the engine for two and a half years.

hl2 goes for texture resolution, where doom 3 goes for having every texture bump mapped.

We have hatched quite a successful thread in the 2d Art / Texture forum, in which people take textures from the original Half-Life and remake them in a high resolution, more appropriate for the Source engine. Some new and very talented artists have signed up for the forums just for this thread, so be sure to check it out!

I can't wait to play it, I hear it's amazing. And this from people who are not easily impressed.

thats looking pretty slick! I would make the buttons look rounded or swipe some photsource buttons. I think maybe you could use some more shading and stainging, see in the original how the right side is dirtier on the edge than the rest. I think some stuff like that would make the door seem a lot less flat. Everything else though it spot on like the original, the colors are exact.

But you can have different types, right? Water that is clear as day and then water that is perhaps muddy?

no, it's always 100% transparent, the only way to make it appear muddier or clearer is with fog values.

yea it looks kinda blurry like you scaled up parts of the original texture.

the water shader in hl2 does not use any actual texture. It only uses an animated refraction map.
