  • Guiding The Player's Eye: How Valve guide their players

Guiding a player in a dark, alien place, where the player can move 360° (flying in zero-g) and doesn't have a map surely wasn't very easy in Crysis. Lightbeams, color coding, sounds and as many landmarks as possible - still some people got lost.

I'm not completely convinced that a subforum is necessary, but we could give it a try and see if the input is worth it?

This is relevant for this thread: http://aliceandkev.wordpress.com/

It is awesome. Read through the whole thing from the beginning.

I only fiddled with the first Sims game, but reading this makes me want this one.

That blog set off my guerilla marketing alarm, but after checking the author's similar projects for different games, I guess it's genuine. One of my buddies at uni recently wrote a paper on the usage of blogs for PR, if the blog was created by EA, it would be an excellent execution of how to promote your game effectively, for free.

    Haha.. no.

That is a ridiculous statement.. They want to ban violent fps games explicitly (just count GTA to it.. even if it rather would be tps).

I think Skjalg is bringing up a rather interesting point: the legal details of the law. The political message that is conveyed is "we ban killergames", in detail the proposal would probably read something like "ban of any games depicting virtual violence against humans or humanoid characters", we already have laws in place for extreme portrayal of violence, that's why games get censored or banned in Germany, but if you don't judge anymore between what is adult entertainment and what is "too much" (case by case), instead outright ban everything, you still need to draw the line somewhere. It just shows another facette of how ludicrous and far from reality this proposal actually is.

yeah but it never got to the point were all 16 ministers agreed on the ban and were this close to making it a law. it might actually become a reality this time around [Blocked Image: https://migrationtest.mapcore.org/public/style_emoticons/default/mapcore_smilies/emot_shakehead.gif]

If they actually go through with it (which I do not expect) then they won't keep male teenagers from playing these games, they would just alienate them further. Anyway...idiots...

I was going to open a thread about this and then I remembered for how long this topic is being brought up by politicians and nothing actually happens. Take the paintball ban for example (to non-germans reading this: yes german politicians actually decided to ban paintball for the same reasons as they want to ban violent videogames) - big agenda setting by the press, huge uproar in the paintball community (for obvious reasons) and the result? They silently scrapped the ban under the table again.

Can't afford a 750 euro screen though, I had a look at my buddy's 26" samsung one yesterday and it looked really slick. I think I'll throw my money at that one.

That screen costs $419 in the states and €750 in Germany. Fail

    Edit: I guess a screen from Samsung (26"!) makes a lot more sense http://www.amazon.de/gp/product/B0017H9 ... i100015-21

Hey I am looking for a bigger screen on my desktop (my current one is 17") that I can hook my PC up to as well as my 360. Pushing a button to switch between the two would be very convenient. If I recall correctly Mr. Mazzel got a setup like this? I guess in that case we aren't even talking about PC screens anymore but small, flatscreen TVs? I just want to play console from my desk chair, my regular TV is too small for being so far away from my couch, also it's a CRT, so no HD goodness for me as of now It would be convenient to have a bigger screen to do anything PC related too of course. To be honest I have no idea when it comes to this, I need help guys. Has anybody got some recommendations from personal experience?

I don't know what to make out of this yet. If this is truely genuine, I guess all of us need to put some serious thinking into the possibilities that are opening up and we need to rethink about how we interact with games..."games" - I'm not even sure if that term is still appropriate for that Mylo character, this looks like crazy sci-fi virtual computer character shit. One thing to me is certain - it won't work as good as in those videos. It can't. Prove me wrong, but this technology seems to be coming out of nowhere (scanning your skeleton, scanning items, how crazy is that?) and while I must admit, my initial skepticism towards this whole thing has been somewhat lifted after reading hands-on articles of journalists trying it, I'd like to try this myself before getting too excited. I don't know if that made sense, but I'm quite baffled, what does everyone else think?

P.S. Kudos to Microsoft for stealing Sony's thunder before they even presented their motion technology. Those two glowing sticks surely do look kinda stupid now in comparison.
