It's a vicious circle. Maybe these countries would still be a "buffer zone" today, but it is more likely that your're right: they would be governed by Kreml-loyal authoritarian leaders.

Russia feels betrayed since former Warsaw Pact members like Poland, Czech Republic, Hungary etc. joined NATO. Regardless of whether there was a formal commitment that this would never ever happen or not, there was apparently an understanding between Eastern and Western politicians at the time of the German reunification and Germany's entrance to NATO, that NATO wouldn't push further East. Yet this is what's happening and I think that notion that NATO is creeping further towards Russian borders and cannot be trusted explains why Russia is reacting the way it does in the Ukrainian matter. With the change in government (pro-EU, pro-NATO) they saw their most important military base by the Black Sea about to be lost due to NATO and didn't want to let that happen.

Why Washington says about freedom of sirian and libyan, where fight terrorist with screams like "ALAHADBAR!"? I saw a report on German TV yesterday which said that the Russian mainstream media greatly exaggerates the problem of Ukrainian ultra-nationalists. These people exist but they are not in numbers or in positions of power as RT etc. want to make you believe, they say. They showed a number of RT horror stories about the "Ukrainian fascists" which were debunked by Russian journalists not working for the mainstream.

I'd be interested to hear though: what kind of laws did the new Ukrainian government introduce to oppress the Eastern-Ukrainians? I heard that there was a proposal to remove Russian as an official language but that has been dismissed.

A Malaysian airline was attacked. The majority of the passengers just happened to be Dutch. I'm not sure if article 5 applies here. Regardless a military operation to extract the corpses is an option but not an easy undertaking considering that the body count is in the hundreds and the remains are spread out. PHEW! That was a tense, hard-fought and balanced final. I was worried till the very end that the Germans get soo close to winning the whole thing - only to be disappointed again. Then out of all players Götze scores during the extra-time. Unbelievable. A dream come true. I think the cup victory was well-deserved - if not even overdue. I'm especially happy for Klose and the other older players. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a hangover to treat now
