It's usually a safe bet to post any technical questions in the "engine discussion" section, although the description doesn't really fit in this case. It should be changed actually and I've asked for it before, maybe if we all scream for it it will happen and I won't have to move threads all the time anymore

  • Scott Miller: Steam should not be a part of valve

Scott M. actually said pretty much the same thing a couple of weeks ago in one of the next-gen.biz podcasts:

    http://podcast.next-gen.biz/

He also mentions Steam's outrageous fees to distribute your game on the platform beside the "conflict of interest" issues (full acess to revenue accounts, sales figures etc. which he wouldn't want to expose to Valve). Sounds reasonable that you don't want to feed a competitor's wallet, but Gabe Newell's take (the podcast after Scott's) was interesting too:

3D Realms licenses competitor's engines like many other studios do or work together with Nintendo and Sony for their consoles although these companies develop their 1st party titles as well.

I can see Steam spinning off from Valve in the future though, I just had a look at their website after a while again and although the amount of games being distributed by Steam today is quite remarkable, it can quickly be overtaken by an independent, neutral digital distribution start up.

It's a cinematic (made by Blur) and I would judge it like that. I think it's cool, although the E3 one is better. The little girl in this one looks like she is a demon herself - creepy

The gameplay footage that was recently released wasn't that impressive though - I agree - but when you think about it, it looks like playing Diablo, just with complete 3D graphics from 3rd or 1st person perspective.

And Diablo was "lots of fun". I think that is Bill Roper's/Flagship's biggest trump. Everyone says "it's the guys who made Diablo, it has to be fun". Well, it remains to be seen if they can live up to it, or if it will turn out to suck

Bump, I saw this screenshot of Dark Sector (PS3 exclusive by Digital Extremes) today and felt reminded of this thread

Coop and zombie games, I see a new thrend there.

Anyway, sounds cool, looking forward to see all the described in motion.

I had a slightly similar idea a few years back actually and wrote a little design document. A MOD for UT2003 set in the future, a small group of rebels fights an intergalactic dictator and his soldiers (this sounds a lot like Star Wars now that I write it down again, but think more badass and high tech, less fantasy...).

The group consists of 5 classes, each with cool high tech weapons (one class is a special forces droid turned against the evil empire), but all of them basically follow the medic, heavy arms guy, spy etc. scheme. The group of players has to complete objectives in a level (similar to the UT Assault mode) and fight plenty of enemy soldiers which are AI controlled, but can also be played by real players. If one of the players in the bad guys team dies, he takes control of the next one until there are none left.

The Zombie/Survival theme and the different zombie classes with individual, special powers take this to a completely different level though

Can`t really help you but I wanted to say that I`ve found it increasingly difficult lately to keep up on hardware developments as well. Probably because I only got an old notebook for internet access but no gaming rig at home, I play all games on my machine at work.

Oh, and I moved the thread to off-topic because it isn`t directly games related, hope you don`t mind!

It's really hard to believe all the good scores. I have such a hard time thinking it could actually deserve it. But if it turns out it does it's probably the best game for years.

Yea it looks great art wise, but the gameplay looks kinda dull. I read the Gamespot review and nothing really struck me that could justify such an outstanding score except for nice graphics and very good sound. Then again, PC and xbox 360 ratings/reviews are two pairs of different shoes (compare the best rated games on both platforms yourself).

I am eager to play it though to find out what it's all about

are you guys actually serious? how can you expect places to not have addresses? you just want people to write "that big church on the west side" on envelopes?

It is like sending a letter to the Eiffel Tower in Paris.

Everyone knows where/what it is and most importantly: There is no mailbox anyway.

welcome to the civilized world. we use numbers to seperate household mailboxes

    O'RLY

I think this shows German correctness very well, no matter what it is that you build - a pyramid, a nuclear power plant, a cathedral - you better put a sign with a house number on it, otherwise the postman can't verify the adress and THE ENTIRE SYSTEM FAILS !!!

Looks good! I think the small houses are way too repetitive.

I think the idea is great and this can look awesome, but maybe less houses and more variation would be better?
