I found Postal 2 to be an amusing waste of time.

Yea me too. I don't recall if I finished it but I played it for quite a while. I just hope you won't have to load as much as in Postal2...oh god, every 10 meters a loading screen...they are still haunting me today

FINALLY some footage of the game! So stoked!

It looks like they are using Cryengine 1, or more specifically Ubisoft's modified and adapted version, optimized for consoles. I'm wondering what else they added under the hood, maybe in conjunction for use in FarCry2?

I am more interested to hear some more infos on the gameplay though, I hope it won't be your average, linear, action adventure with movie/tv show license.

Haha nice, I still like the first one better though. You know exactly what's gonna happen after watching the first guy get punched and then it's just getting more and more hilarious

If your goal is to get on news sites, make art assets and build up your portfolio then by all means - take your time and make it look fucking fantastic.

If you want to develop a game that will make people not only pop in for the looks but also stay in for the fun, then go for the iterative approach. That is my last word on this...for tonight at least

So what do you expect me to do now? List the MODs that took 3 years or longer to bring out a first public release and have little player counts today? There are many...

The difference is that if your mod sucks and nobody plays it, you can react and make the necessary changes after a couple of months instead of revamping it after 3 wasted years...or abandon it all together.

    It's called prototyping

I can only emphasize what KFS and Fletch said - from own experience.

Developing Monkeystrike took like...3 years till a first public release? Overall it was a fun time and I don't want to miss it - also the MOD was fun to me and plenty of other people, but it had stability issues, bugs, the balancing was far from perfect and in retrospective it was a way too ambitious project. That is for 3 people plus a handful of artists and additional level designers who each contributed one or two models or one map. On release we had 5 classes, using about 12 different original weapons, 4 (!) different game modes with 10 levels from the get go! We should have just started out with Deathmatch (which was the most fun), polished it and built up on that. But working on the same thing for so long has its price, we barely had any motivation whatsoever left and stopped to continue the development.

Even Valve told the community long time ago: if you don't release your MOD in smaller chunks, in iterations, then you are losing the biggest advantage that MODs have over retail games. Valve is actually trying to compensate exactly this now by going episodic.

I can understand that people take pride in their work and want to take the time it needs until they think they can't make it any better, but the truth is also that games are meant to be played. And if you want to build a strong fanbase, get a lot of feedback, find out what people think is fun, tweak, balance, fix, in the shortest time possible, then you should do what each much played MOD out there did - including Garry's.

But hey - it's your freetime and you are entitled do what you wish, we are just trying to give advise so you don't make the same mistakes we did

So what? Its popularity still exceeds any other hl2 mod's out there.

Good read - not only for modders but also "professional" developers. He isn't only doing what he wants to and is succesful at it, he is also an SA goon and incredibly handsome! Hats off to Garry!

e-freak: I don't know yet how many Crytekkers will go this year, most likely it's going to be just 2 or 3 showcasing the game and the rest stays in the bunker.
