Oh shit, Act on Instinct. That was an awesome track!

Haha, great choices. Did you ever play Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts and Bolts on the 360? It wasn't a great game really really, but if you never played it (or didn't get very far) you're in for a treat when you hear these...

Haha, OK I'll look into getting a new page up and making sure the donation accounts still work. Support is appreciated guys.

My favouritest game of all. I still find myself playing it every now and again.

Oh my god, the amount of time I lost to that game during my college years.

Yeah, looking forward to this so much I'm pretty much just getting permanently wetter the closer we get to the release date.
Just watched the extended Blu-ray editions of the first two LOTR films, and about to move onto the third. God man, if The Hobbit even comes close to scratching the quality of this we're in for a huge treat.

Yeah, to be fair I've worked for companies that aren't exactly ethically awesome but sometimes you just haven't got a choice, and can't afford to turn both the salary and CV/resume potential down. I have no real beef with the Zynga employees (apart from those who were all for ripping other games off), although I do think they'd be very wise to get out of there ASAP.

Oh dear.
Should have stuck with where they were trying to take the previous title, at least they were offering something interesting. -

what happened with the donations idea? how is the hosting on this site currently funded? by thrik alone?

We did one donation drive roughly a year ago which was designed to fund the site for a year, which thus far has gone into the new software and hosting costs (and is more or less depleted at this point). Prior to that it just came out my pocket.
This seemed to work really well rather than just having a permanent donation button up and the donations received have been invaluable. It is getting towards being time for another donation drive around the beginning of 2013, as while I've never resented forking out for MapCore it obviously takes the pressure off significantly and makes it easier to justify investing my time and money — hence all the changes this year! Whether or not there'd be spare for a game server too I don't know, but if anyone wants to donate in the form of a server that's also awesome and I'll be happy to ensure it's advertised well.

Seems there's a lot of interest in CS:GO and mapping or it right now, so it'd be a sensible choice for playtesting alone.

Well there're a lot of different ways to present an interview, some do it like I have and some do it so the questions don't look much different to the answers. The style of each question is using the usual sub-heading style, which seems intuitive to me as each answer is essentially a separate part of the one article — plus it helps to break things up and stop the article being a never-ending stream of text.
If others agree that this is confusing be sure to leave a comment and I can take another look at it.

Looks really good!
Kind of brings to mind though.
That was so sad, I'm sure this will be a great success though based on its licenses and backing.

I suppose the kind of fog depends on whether you want a warm or cold scene, doesn't necessarily need to be 100% realistic. I really like the warm version that was posted, though I agree with the other comments.

Oh god, Banjo-Kazooie.
Loved that game so much, easily the Nintendo 64's best platformer IMO. -
In the UK you usually at least get paid for the equivalent of your notice period (by law), but they can put you on 'garden leave' where you're escorted off the premises more or less immediately and don't actually work that time. In some ways this is a blessing as it means you can search for a new job, but on the other hand nothing hits you harder than going from having a normal day at work to being out on your ass within the space of a few hours.
Since then I've learnt to never, ever rely on a job and let your skills/portfolio slide — you could need them at any moment. Even if you're not laid off, an awesome opportunity could pass you by but your portfolio isn't in a fit/updated state to show in time (happened to me).
No idea how it works in the US, though. Probably not so favourably.

Really never seen the issue with the colour myself, I think the game looks great. Battlefield 2 was as brown as a pair of shitty pants and Battlefield 2142 as blue–grey as Rick_D's heart so I'm really not sure why so many BF fans think they've been completely hard done by. The whole point is clearly for the game to look like it's being seen through a helmet cam or some shit so the continued 'LOL SINCE WHEN DO EYES HAVE LENS FLARE AND COLOUR CORRECTION YOU TWATS' comments are redundant and in fact mildly infuriating.
I'm so glad I stopped visiting the EAUK forums, my blood was starting to raise a few degrees every minute I spent there. I'm getting pissed off even thinking about that place and its comments. I'd love Battlefield 4 to be set in World War 2 and corrected to be completely fucking black & white until the first patch, just to screw with those guys.
On a lighter note, I've not played BF3 since winter and am going to upgrade my computer soon so I can finally play it on decent settings and enjoy the new expansions. Hope everyone's not so good I get assholed into the ground the moment I log in.

-
Yeah, I totally want to see Zynga burn to the ground but it's very sad that they don't even have the grace to do it in a way that respects their employees. I've been there myself (along with many MapCore members I imagine), given my marching orders and less than an hour to GTFO while half the company is laid off — you're pissed off as fuck, immediately worried about the future, and surrounded by equally depressed faces. Worst experience ever.

MapCore speaks with level designer and photographer Jean-Paul Jarreau, responsible for reimagining Half-Life's iconic environments in highly-acclaimed remake Black Mesa (AKA Black Mesa: Source). Jean-Paul describes how he got into mapping, details the hairy development process of Black Mesa, and shares some useful pointers for budding level designers and photographers alike.
