Kiefer wasn't playing Snake though, he was the masked dude. Some random dude is playing Snake, who doesn't sound remotely like Big Boss in his MGS3 or MGS4 renditions. ![]()

QuoteDisplay MoreMETAL GEAR VBy
David Hayter
So,
Here’s a recap of events:
I have been up in Toronto, for the past eight months, directing my first film, (WOLVES -- 2013, TF1/COPPERHEART). On the December break, I came home to Los Angeles for the holidays. I heard then, that recording sessions for MG:V were being put together.
But I didn’t hear anything about whether I’d be needed or not.
So, I got in touch with someone involved in the production. We got together for lunch, and he told me that they "wouldn’t be needing me" on this game. No reason, or explanation was given beyond that.
And that was it.
I drove home through Laurel Canyon, bummed, and thinking about Snake.
To be clear, I love being a part of the world of Metal Gear. I admire its technological innovations, the gameplay, the political message of it all. But primarily, I love the fans of these games. Two grown men burst into tears upon meeting me at the Vancouver Fan Expo last year.
Now that... Is a rare and excellent role. You know you’re making an impact.
And I love doing it.
In 1998, I tried to do come up with a voice which epitomized the kind of worn, put-upon, genetically-engineered clone-soldier that I saw Snake to be. Over time, as the games became more stunning and visually sophisticated, I tried to transition that initial voice into the increasingly real environments in which Snake found himself. My level of success is up to you, but any perceived deficiencies were not for lack of hard work. I have dedicated a huge amount of time and effort into creating a compelling character, capable of expressing the myriad emotional, physical and psychological hurdles that Snake has to face.
Anyway, now it’s been fifteen years, nine games, and an enormous blast to undertake.
If it were my choice, I would do this role forever. To hear anyone else’s voice coming from Snake’s battered throat, makes me a little ill, to be honest.
But the truth is -- it’s not my choice. Any and all casting decisions are the sole purview of Hideo Kojima, and Konami itself. And that’s fair.
And I’ll get by. I am not lacking for employment on any level.
But I didn’t want anybody to think that I was intentionally abandoning them.
And know that I will miss this job, and this character, very much.
My best wishes to you all,
David Hayter
April 1, 2013

The timing of Hayter's post means it's either all some elaborate April Fool's joke, or we really are fucked as far as getting our usual dose of gravelly Snake voice goes.

lol. Assholes. D:
-
It's a fair point. Things like that make a bigger difference to the immersion of a game than a lot of people realise I think. I remember the first time I saw clothes realistically getting wet in Uncharted and was like "Omg
". -
-
lol, some people are so crazy. And sad.
-
Nice. Loving the almost melancholic atmosphere they're going for.

Yeah I think my literal reaction to the Raiden reveal was:

I know, they were two separate reactions.

It's too impossible for me to imagine that Hayter is truly gone, this'd be the first main MGS game without him. At the very least Richard Boyle who voiced the older Big Boss would be a good choice, but not this guy with a higher Raiden-like voice.

Better be a temp voice or there will be outrage, lol.

It'd be pretty amazing if a recurring theme in MGS5 was Big Boss literally tripping the fuck out and having to combat his demons. They could even make out that it's Big Boss' insane visions that led to him doing bad things in the future, literally seeing rainbows as he tried to take Solid Snake out.

Going to close this thread now we know Ground Zeroes is actually MGS5 so things don't get too confusing. Thread for MGS5 can be found here:

-
Yep, looks like Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are both MGS5. I'm relieved, I was worried that Ground Zeroes was going to end up being some second-rate game that was just filling the gap before MGS5.

-
Live talk going on about Ground Zeroes at GDC right now for those not there:
http://uk.gamespot.com/shows/gamespot…zeroes-20130327
I'm not actively watching it but while it was up for like 10 seconds just now I noticed Phantom Pain footage was showing, so I guess that pretty much concludes the speculation about that.

That's an entirely separate discussion really, but I did say (earlier in this thread I think) that Kickstarter should definitely have processes for managing transparency of how extra funds will be used. Some people who might not be particularly wealthy back a project because they believe in it. For those people it must be really frustrating if the project then earns way over what it required, and there's no clear indication of where that extra money will go — maybe an extra holiday for the project owner, who knows?
One idea I had was to allow backers to withdraw their funds on a first-come, first-served basis if the Kickstarter goes above its target; once the funds fall back down to the target level the feature becomes unavailable again. This'll allow those who don't have so much spare cash to take their money back when the project owner clearly doesn't need it. I guess people could already do this, I don't know how Kickstarter handles someone cancelling their payment or if it's even possible.
In Anita's case it's not such a big deal, she did promise to put the extra funds into making better-quality videos (although the results of that are arguable compared to her older videos). But you might have heard of another big Kickstarter controversy this week, where a woman put up a Kickstarter for like $900 to get her daughter sent to game design school. Because it hit the headlines she ended up with $20,000+, and then people started thinking "Wait a minute..." because they couldn't figure out where all that extra money would go and the project owner made no effort to clarify matters.
Then to make matters worse it turned out the woman was quite wealthy, and freely admitted she didn't really need the funds, but thought it'd be a cute idea. It then naturally turned into a fiercely abusive internet backlash, reducing the woman to tears after countless death threats, etc. So a horrible turnout, but one that Kickstarter's lack of a proper way of dealing with this caused IMO.

Well I'm not expecting much from the single-player, but the multiplayer is sure to be great — especially if Battlefield 3's issues are refined and the stuff they've learnt from the DLC is remembered. A bit worrying that there'll be the same number of maps as in BF3 but even more of them will be CQC, I thought BF3 had too many small maps. But I guess DLC will work on that.
