  • The Half-Life 3 thread of closure and memorium AKA what Tyler McVicker just said on YouTube

I was reading about the Half-Life 3 development recently and found this Wikia article quite interesting. As I read through the page, it became apparent that Valve has had some serious difficulty figuring out what they want to do as a studio and with HL3. It can't really be summarised, but it seems quite clear that Episode 3 is toast and that Half-Life 3's development is still in its early stages.

I think most people saw this quote but it remains the most telling thing Gabe has said about the game IMO (Ricochet is an obvious reference to HL3 based on the way the question was asked BTW):

    Quote

"In terms of Ricochet 2, we always have this problem that when we talk about things too far in advance, we end up changing our minds as we're going through and developing stuff, so as we're thinking through the giant story arc which is Ricochet 2, you might get to a point where you're saying something is surprising us in a positive way and something is surprising us in a negative way, and, you know, we'd like to be super-transparent about the future of Ricochet 2. The problem is, we think that the twists and turns that we're going through would probably drive people more crazy than just being silent about it, until we can be very crisp about what's happening next." When asked if those working on the project have moved on to other games, he responds, "No, everybody who has worked on Ricochet 2 continues to work on Ricochet 2."

I can see what he means. It sounds like Valve has changed its mind about the direction of the game numerous times, going from it being purely episodic to it being an 'evolving' game with new levels being added all the time to it being a social game. I guess we should thank the heavens Valve decided to do these things with other games instead, but imagine if they'd been open and told us they were considering doing these things with HL3. People would have gone fucking crazy. It's better to just be quiet and wait until they eventually decide on their true direction, and get all this other shit out of their system first.

I have no doubt that Half-Life 3 will come, but actively waiting for it is retarded because this is Valve and it could take so long it's not even funny. I think they'll deal with Episode 3 by having it be some kind of prologue to the game, and then Half-Life 3 proper will be just as different to HL2 as HL2 was to HL1.

CryEngine has probably been doing that since 1987.

Looks great. They're not doing themselves any favours with that name though, I searched Google for 'raindrop' and 'raindrop game' and couldn't find them anywhere... lol.

I agree that it's no system seller. I'll definitely pick a Wii U up at some point, but where the fuck are all the amazing Nintendo games that always prompted me to buy their consoles in the past? Buying a Nintendo console has always been about getting your hands on those sweet-ass first-party experiences yet they're nowhere to be found about a year after launch...?

As for Wind Waker HD, to be honest it just delivers exactly what Wind Waker fans have been wanting for years: the opportunity to easily enjoy it in high resolution with no compromises made to the textures, etc — and with some improvements to the game's original flaws like a slightly pain-in-ass inventory/map and slow sailing (I didn't mind the first time but I don't think I can handle it a second time). Did anyone really want a complete remake like Conker or MGS?

I kind of wish they'd also increased the poly count on more things, but where do you stop with that and when does it start changing the game's art direction which is built around those slightly angular shapes? At least they redid all the textures. Anyway it's going to make a lot of fans happy and that's what matters. Unless you really hate bloom it's about as faithful and perfect an upgrade as it gets.

Now stop FUCKING about with Zelda and get this shit released in HD Nintendo.

The streaming thing is interesting. Will they take it a step further and allow remote streaming like Sony and OnLive, for those without a powerful PC sat elsewhere in the house?

Love the look, it really reminds me of Alan Wake in some ways (which had some of the most beautiful forest environments of any game IMO).

If anyone posts and/or PMs me pictures of Hurg easter eggs I'll put together a proper page for them at some point. Happy to keep people anonymous if you PM me.

Edit: lmao already received some good shit. Keep it coming.

I doubt Half-Life 3 is even out of pre-production yet after seeing those leaks of Valve's project/bug thing, lol.

Amazing. I'm amazed nobody on the internet seems to have come across the one all gamers should be looking out for though, is it not in the game? It was in San Andreas.

I love it! For some reason one of the first things it evoked was Monkey Island, though that's probably just the palette. It looks amazing though, so nice to see something so different in CS

    Capture the Defuser

One team had the ingenious idea of setting up a bomb in the enemy's base, and they keep the one and only compatible defuser in the same location in their own base — all they have to do is wait for the timer to run out and prevent the enemy from taking the defuser back to the bomb. Unfortunately the other team had the same idea, and now both teams are in a frantic rush to retrieve the defusers before everybody dies.

You can thank me by implementing it in some map.

Nothing new here, but god damn looking over these gets me excited about what will surely be a silly but thrilling story. They look in-engine too.
