Part of me is thinking I might be better off going back to BF3 rather than BF4 when I update my computer in a few months. I haven't played any of the DLC so it's probably like a whole new game, certainly no less so than BF4. I guess I'll see how active it is then.

Yeah that does concern me. BF3 already seemed to be going very strongly, and it hasn't even been long since all its DLC finished coming out so there's still lots of life left in it. It could have potentially been something like TF2 where it gets added to for years to come, attracting new players all the time.

Instead BF4 is basically going to kill or at least severely fracture the BF3 community. I've never seen good things come from releasing multiplayer-focused games in such a short space of time simply because community is such a big deal. Of course I also remember something happening with BF2 and BF2142, except that time BF2142's community died sooner if I recall because people were still too happy with BF2 and didn't feel the need for a new game (although BF2142 was in fact incredible).

I'm still going to buy the final BF4 and will likely love it. I just still think it's a case of 'too soon', especially with so many people saying it looks overwhelmingly similar to BF3 — which isn't just a 'whiny gamers' thing IMO, it's the truth. It even looks like detail has been pared back in some areas to support the destruction.

lol sweet. There is one really weird thing about that otherwise amazing skyscraper collapse though: the water doesn't seem to be affected at all. With all the hype about the physics-based water, where's the ripple/waves? Does it happen when you're closer?

Too vague. You need to create one thing at a time, and if you can't figure it out ask for help.

Tip: You shouldn't be using props for the structure of the map, and that includes stairs. You need to use the regular shape/brush tools. You can create most things by starting with a cube and using the vertex editor to shape it as desired, adding extra sides and vertex points using the clip tool when necessary.

This is all super-basic stuff so you should go to the Source SDK Wiki or something and read some total beginner tutorials, most people haven't really got time to hold your hand through the basics. This one looks good:

It's a place where people write creepy-ass stories, or rather 'files'. Some games have been based on the stories there. This one (based on this which you should read first) is so simple but still shit me up with headphones on in a dark room:

Scary isn't it? Some of the old threads are so great. If you hop back 10 years you can see us all basically talking about Half-Life 2 in the same way as Half-Life 3 haha. Hindsight is a wonderful thing when you see threads like 'OK surely Valve won't delay HL2 past April 2004, that'd ruin their reputation forever'.

That looks awesome Mazy. I love that Nintendo is just taking everything it's done with Mario and splurging it out into this insane 3D/2D hybrid. In some ways it could end up being even better than Mario Galaxy — which also mixed 3D and 2D sections but had more of the former, whereas this looks like the opposite. My only bother is some 3D bits like 0:40 look kind of crappy, almost like an afterthought. I hope that gets improved.

As for Nintendo's visuals as a whole, I totally agree that Nintendo has always seemed to be at the top of its game when it comes to rendering stylised graphics. I think it's definitely a combination of technological skill, great art direction, and simply a whole lot of polish. They put so much effort into every last effect and detail that the end result is usually mesmerising. I mean, just look at a game like Wind Waker — the level of the art that went into that game in 2002 is bewildering, to the point where they didn't even have to do much to make it still look great in 2013.

Even Nintendo's later 2D efforts like Yoshi's Island are timelessly beautiful. They have some crazily skilled people over there.

It seems a bit silly that betas nowadays have so little content. How can you really beta test a game when most of the levels, weapons, and features are missing? What if commander mode has some major bugs nobody at EA or DICE is spotting? At the very best you're going to just end up with one really well-tested level, lol. At this point we really need to drop the 'beta' charade which is probably 50 builds behind the retail version anyway, and just call it a damn demo. All they really want from players is feedback to inform future patches anyway IMO.

Wait, it's even easier to die now? Battlefield has always been a game where it only takes a few accurate shots to kill you (four with an assault rifle) so hearing that it's even faster to die now is crazy. Are you sure you weren't playing on whatever the BF4 equivalent of a 'hardcore' server is?

IMO Battlefield has always gotten damage just right, much like Day of Defeat always did. I hope they aren't fucking with that winning formula, this kind of thing is more important than one might initially think.

I can just imagine Gabe Newell at Valve HQ thinking it might be worth testing the waters to see if there's still high demand for a new Half-Life. He arranges for a subtle clue that only the most obsessive of people would notice, probably weeks later. Except literally the next day Gabe wakes up and finds the entire internet on fire. "Holy shit" was likely the response before he realised that if the game is anything less than absolute perfection the Valve facility will be besieged and everyone inside hung, drawn, and quartered.
