Yeah, surprising. Whatever your opinion on the game and its release schedule, Call of Duty has always been a pretty safe bet in terms of quality. Could this be the first exception to that rule that leaves even its most die-hard fans cold, with the new generation spelling the end of the franchise's grip on console gaming?

Well, probably not. But I think more people should stop for a moment before blindly buying it this time around if the reviews are anything to go by.

24 FPS is pretty shit even in movies where motion blurring hides a lot of it, at least for pans and such. 24 FPS in gaming is madness, lol. 30 FPS is an absolute minimum as far as I'm concerned. For me, 1080p (the maximum 99% of living room gamers can actually perceive) with as high a frame rate as possible is what developers should be targeting.

Also the 'just go buy a PC' argument really sucks. Consoles have lots of great exclusives, and even when games are available on the PC it's often much later and with compromises — things are getting better, but we ain't there yet. And of course couch gaming is more difficult on a PC, at least until we enter the Steam Machine world.

Don't you think we'd all just have PCs in our living rooms if it were practical? I've actually had a Crysis-spec PC in my living room which I used for gaming for a year and it was a constant pain in the ass in almost every way. Saying that we're not allowed to have an opinion on tech specs and performance because we haven't invested in a powerhouse PC...

Nice. I love burger making. My favourite recipe so far is a thin beef patty, microwaved egg (like McDonald's McMuffin eggs), and slice of bacon. I found some really sweet flatbread type things that work really well.

    Edit: These...

Last CoD I played was Modern Warfare 2, I'm a victim of brand overdose (same with Ass Creed). I did enjoy both MWs, though. I guess as this is a new story(?) I can get back into it, although not if the reviews end up being shitty.

4k is never going to be a standard IMO. TV fidelity hit the 'so good that we don't need any better' level with 1080p, the same way that CDs did many years ago.

Unless you're literally sitting right next to a 70-inch TV I can't see the use of higher. It's not like with monitors where you can appreciate ultra-high pixel density.

What I'm finding most amazing is discovering how many current-gen games weren't even 720p. I mean fuck man, 600p seems to be more or less typical and that's only halfway between SD and 720p — and 720p barely even qualifies as HD IMO.

It looks more like this generation is going to be the real HD generation. Games are going to so much better being as sharp as they should be. On the PS4 at least. I guess we'd better get ready to buy SuperHD re-releases of all our games.

Good point. If anyone else is experiencing stutter and CPU/GPU spikes. Please post it here:

Every complaint so far from NVIDIA card owners. I hope this isn't a sign of what's to come now that all the consoles are using AMD cards (i.e. everything being optimised for them).

FWIW you should post these criticisms to DICE, I assume they have a proper feedback forum or form. With Battlefield 3 a lot of serious balance changes were made during the first few months because of feedback by players in the official forums, which is one thing that I do like about DICE — they're bold enough to experiment with long-established mechanics, but humble enough to change them if they suck.

Otherwise Battlefield would be like many other franchises where each sequel is the same gameplay but with a different coat of paint. I mean, it's important to remember that Battlefield 3 is still there if you want the same gameplay as before, hell even Battlefield 2 is as long as you don't mind playing with ultra-dedicated hardcore assholes.

With any luck the game will be nice and balanced by the time I get it in a few months.

Some of that stuff looks great. What are those burger things?

The most inventive thing I've made recently is a jar of Kung Po sauce with minced beef and pasta (more beef than pasta). I just cook the beef and pasta in separate pans then throw them together with the sauce for a few minutes. For a quick and easy meal it's remarkably delicious.

Chrome caused me problems with Battlefield 3 too. I actually started using Internet Explorer for Battlelog/Battlefield because it uses up a fraction of the resources when idling in the background. Chrome is fast but it isn't shy about assholing your CPU and RAM and even sometimes your GPU to keep your web browsing as smooth as possible. Minimising will help but you'll still notice like three Chrome.exe processes running.

OK, give me a head count guys. I can create a third creative forum for coding, I just don't want to take up space up the forum home page if it'll only get like one post a week.

I've no problem with coding stuff being posted in the 3D/2D forums (depending on whether it relates to 3D or 2D implementations) but I appreciate it feels a bit weird and a proper coding forum would be more ideal.

Not sure it warrants a whole forum (that's normally only done if there are too many posts about a subject for one forum), but a sticky thread about it might be good. I could sticky this one if you want to keep the OP up to date with links to posts in the thread with useful stuff?

Yeah I'll be adding one of those to my collection too. Holy shit man, going to need to clear out some room on my TV stand considering that these consoles are coming with camera units too.

All I can say as someone who owned both is that the PS3 was pretty much excellent from day one, whereas the Xbox 360 was (IMO) a bag of shit both in terms of hardware and the OS. I think they're doing much better this time around, but I can't help but see Sony as the one that brings quality to everything it does and I expect the PS4 to deliver in every way I'm hoping. I also enjoyed more PS3 exclusives (including some smaller but incredible titles like Journey) compared to 360 exclusives.

I'll definitely own both the PS4 and XBone, but I'm going with the PS4 first. If history repeats itself, it'll be the superior console for at least the first year — by which point both will become cheaper anyway. It looks like the few issues the PS3 had (i.e. weird architecture) have not just been solved, but better than Microsoft's attempt.

There's probably a touch of early development issues here, but the fact that the XBone version of Battlefield 4 demoed so far lacks some shader/detail effects and runs in a lower resolution — and now similar for Ghosts — isn't doing Microsoft any favours. Still, I expect the XBone to have some excellent exclusives where cross-platform differences are irrelevant (Zoo Tycoon is actually my most anticipated next-gen game right now lmao), so as a die-hard gamer I will own one.

Lower resolution usually means more visible aliasing, and not a small difference either. I think it's perfectly reasonable to want at least actual HD. Anti-aliasing minimises the damage but I doubt developers will prioritise that over more frames.

I don't really care how the average asshole plays games or what they want. I just know what I like, and that's all those discussing resolution are doing — saying what they prefer.

But I wasn't trying to bring up resolution as a major issue, just as an incidental small pro the PS4 version has (in addition to better shader effects ).
