  • Does this mean it is for real?

It's funny because it feels the opposite here in the UK, with internet speeds increasing at a rate of about 20mb/s per year for the past several years (obviously only in major areas but quieter parts are getting faster at a lower rate). In fact, the rate of progress here has gone way beyond my expectations. There was a recent controversy about filtering UK internet, but in reality that's turned out to be a bit of a non-event and is only really an issue for those who don't pay the bill — but then parents have always had the option of filtering their kids' internet if they really want to, although that's not really something I believe in.

I'm not sure how it is in the US, but I've had the distinct impression from talking to people on IRC that the web infrastructure is pretty bad over there and fibre isn't nearly as common as it is in many other countries. Maybe that's also part of the problem: either a reluctance or an inability to make serious technological strides in tandem with the rest of the world (bizarre when you think about where a lot of the internet's biggest players come from), forcing them into borderline draconian measures like this to keep things running in the face of a vast capacity issue they're not keen to talk about. I guess the US's sheer size doesn't help either.

I kind of just see the US as like Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

I think the best way of stopping these things is to take away the one source of power the ISPs truly have: money.

It delights me to see these initiatives some companies have been talking to make the internet freely available on a wide scale, like those balloons Google was deploying to cheaply distribute internet access across an entire city if not continent.

What we need is for those technologies to become much more widespread and almost negligible in terms of cost. While companies will always be needed — you can't 'home grow' reliable and performant internet infrastructure — by having it so no one company has anything resembling a stranglehold they simply won't be able to charge huge prices while providing a shit service.

I'd love to see a world where hundreds of companies are offering cheap, global, high-speed internet access. No installation, no limitations, potentially not even registration. It'd definitely require wireless technology to improve but we're going that way.

It's currently a dream but imagine if wireless became so robust you could use an ISP from Germany as easily as the US from any destination on the planet. US ISPs are assholes? Australian ISPs censor? No problem, go choose one from somewhere else. Making the internet providers as global as the internet itself would be huge and force ISPs to think twice about anti-consumer bullshit.

That is absolutely ludicrous. A huge proportion of the internet in general runs on AWS nowadays, not just videos but also entire websites. Are you seriously telling me they're starting to slow down the internet rather than, you know, invest in higher capacity (like some countries are successfully doing)? Shit, man...

Ah they're just meant to do one thing: make it clear it's all British this time, baby.

The promo isn't actually a clip of the show, it was made specially for Super Bowl. I would hope Chloe doesn't look like she belongs on a catwalk in the actual series, lmao.

What i don't understand: in a recent article (maybe even the one i linked precedently) they said they still had to start shooting the show. Three months to go through all the filming and post-production for arguably the best tv show around seems tight. I know they can throw all the money they want at it nowdays, but still...

Don't forget that with US TV shows they often air them as they're still filming them.

Oh I don't know about the latest episodes, but IMO the first two seasons were splendid. You do need to watch it from the beginning though because jumping right in probably makes the present day setting seem particularly weird because you've not been 'eased in', lol.

  • Going to the gym is like a korean MMORPG

    • Thrik
    • February 1, 2014 at 5:03 PM

Not necessarily gym-related, but I've been using an app for the past 11 days called Fitocracy Macros and it's seriously transformed how I eat.

I've used calorie counting apps before but never really had much success with them. The key here is you can't actually enter calories, you have to enter grams of proteins, carbs, and fats. Also, you have to actually find the amounts yourself (i.e. through the web or on the packets). It's almost like a game finding the right food to hit the targets while not exceeding the limits, lol. So for the first time in my entire life I've been properly thinking about how much nutrition is in everything.

I didn't even realise how many carbs were hidden away in things like Coke, coffee, tea, etc. Also I find I can eat so much more meat compared to the pasta, bread, etc I usually eat and be a lot more full. Of course I still consume carbs, but I practically hit the limit the app recommends for my weight and workout frequency just from drinks alone. It's nice to have something telling me how much of each component I should eat rather than just guessing it.

I've lost just over seven pounds in the past 11 days, but I think that will (and should) slow down now the 'beginner's bonus' is over from water retention, etc. The main thing is this has given me a much better understanding of how to eat better and I'm genuinely more energised and full all day from doing this.

Combined with doing weights (it increases my nutrition on workout days) I'm hoping I will end up looking much better in 3–6 months. Which will be useful considering that I'm recently single, LOL.

I'm reserving judgement as I don't really know what he's like as an actor, but I don't see how he couldn't potentially pull it off if he is actually good. He does look young, but after watching the excellent BBC's Sherlock my mind has been very much changed about how unlikely actors can pull off roles (Moriarty) you'd ordinarily expect to be played by someone different.

It'll be interesting to see what they do with his hair though, he would look mildly ridiculous with his usual curly top. He really should be bald, in keeping with the comics:

I'm very happy with the casting of Jeremy Irons as Alfred, though. He's an excellent actor and now he's pretty old he does seem like he could suit the butler role perfectly — plus he's got that slightly dark touch that the butler of a borderline nutcase should have.

    LMAO Frie!

You know what'd really make an MMO for me, or any RPG for that matter? Something that fuses the experience of Skyrim with Minecraft. I know that Minecraft has been introducing its own RPG-like mechanics and such, but the aesthetic of the game is what kills it for me. Imagine if you could be playing a game like Skyrim, but when you're out in the forests you can actually build yourself a proper shack with beautiful lighting and everything. As you progress through the game, you slowly build up an epic stronghold that's always your safe place to go back to. Until it gets destroyed by some big event and then you cry.

The thing is, games like Fable and Skyrim always tantalisingly tease what this kind of thing could be like by giving you pre-fab houses that you can slightly customise, but if they could get the technology to the point where it's feasible to truly craft the shit out of a game without compromising the graphics to laughable proportions I'd love it. Make your own cave in the mountains of Skyrim!

Yeah I was talking to my barber (lol) about it and he said it really wasn't very good at all. A bit like Skyrim except less graphically appealing, filled with annoying people, diluted gameplay, and generally not very engaging at all.

Should have probably seen it coming, considering it's not even by Bethesda GS.

The real revolution is probably right in front of our very eyes. Valve has perfected its physics technology to the point where with a flick of a switch that entire building can explode into 10,000,000,000 physics-enabled pieces, with every single particle of stone and dust reacting in real time to its neighbours, all running on a PlayStation 2.
