I guess that could work Taylor, though it's not a direct derivative. It has a nice ring to it, though!

You can get a high-definition version of the old one here. I'm assuming this isn't what you mean as although it was only added today it seems to just be the little one released a while back (albeit in a great resolution).

I think it's kind of cool that they've got a little running joke type thing going on with the titles. Beats just taking some random noun and then possibly slapping a random adjective on it.

As for the game, sounds rad. Looks like that CryEngine 2 video which did the rounds a while ago came from this. xD

The problem with English is that when a term is used a lot, people start to shorten it for ease and that new term gradually becomes part of the language. It's an evolving language, and doing this is actually valid by the textbooks. A hyphenated word which is used very commonly can have the hyphen legitimately dropped.

An example is with "multiplayer". From a textbook perspective, that should always be written as "multi-player", where "multi-" is by definition the special prefix version of "multiple". However, since the term is used so often, the hyphen has just ended up dropped by pretty much everybody. But it's still valid.

The distinction is that while "multiple" has a special version for use when prefixing, "single" has no such variant. As such, you have to use the term in both a prefix and adjective context.

I guess it all comes down to whether you think of "single" in the context "single player" as a prefix or an adjective. If it's an adjective, then "single player" is correct. If you think of it as a prefix, which is still valid as it is being used as a direct alternative to "multi-", then the correct usage would be "single-player" or "singleplayer".

So, you see, it's not quite that clean cut. But this thread isn't really about finding what the textbook correct term is, but instead what term that most people use so that I can look slightly less silly when using it!

I'm beginning to wonder if you've actually bothered to read the posts in this thread.

There is a lot of ambiguity surrounding which one is correct on the web, with the results of the poll speaking for themselves. Would you rather I just made a thread moaning about games running and looking like shit despite playing it on a seven-year-old machine instead?

You really should try coming up with your own humour instead of just latching onto others', D3. In fact, you should try coming up with something yourself period. xD

But seriously, stop crapping up my thread. If you've nothing to contribute (as usual) then just go and order some more obsolete parts or something.

    Are you for real?

  • Single-player, singleplayer or single player?

Pretty much everybody refers to "multiplayer" as, well, "multiplayer". That's just how it is, with any other rendition hardly ever used. But what about the word's solitary cousin? It's used in so many different ways around the web (just Google them to see) that any degree of consistency is difficult to retain.

So, let's see what the Mapcore feeling is on this word. Which would you and do you use?

PS: I am aware that multi is technically a prefix, however in most situations a hyphen (-) is used between it and the word which follows. However, due to such common use the hyphen has ended up omitted by most people when it precedes "player". Should the single variety follow the same route?

Yes, it's yet another Star Wars game. It's an RTS by Petroglyph though and it does look fairly nice, so I'll be giving it a go once the damned thing downloads. I do love my RTS games.

There's a list of mirrors being maintained here if anyone's having trouble getting it from the official links. Which is basically GameSpot.

That system seems generally fine, although the video card may prove to be somewhat of a bottleneck. I got a 6600GT when HL2 came out, and although it was fine for that period it started to struggle soon after. That is, a lot of games which came out during 2005 have not ran particularly smoothly on the highest settings, including Battlefield 2, Black & White 2 and F.E.A.R. They will run, but thanks to the 6600GT only having 128mb of memory onboard in most cases, it seems to cause a slowdown when processing higher resolution textures and such.

So for example, you will be able to run BF2, but if you move to high textures it will start to stutter. This goes for pretty much all games at the moment. In short, it's not a very future-proof card at all and even for today's games you will have to turn settings down -- that is not what I'd personally look for when upgrading. It's basically a card at the end of its life.

If you can, get the 6800GT, which has an extra 128mb and generally runs games a hell of a lot more efficiently. The only thing much better than that is crossing into the Geforce 7 range, but they are for the most part extremely expensive right now and additionally require PCI-E as opposed to AGP.

Your processor is a bit better than mine and may be able to help, but I cannot see it being sufficient to balance out the 6600GT's inherent limits. I'm on an AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with 1GB of DDRAM and a Geforce 6600GT, for comparison.

In all honesty, not that many people do complain about it anymore. It's fast becoming a standard way of playing games (last time I checked there were over seven third parties signed up to distribute via Steam, and EA and whatnot are introducing their own mandatory services for certain titles as we speak), and whether you like it or not the internet is going to become necessary for a lot of software to function in the near future.

Steam in particular is also a fantastic way of cracking down on warez, which is a very serious issue with pretty much all PC software in general at the moment, something which could very easily be a death sentence for smaller developers who put out innovative games. The public thinks "Oh, this game might be a bit weird so I'll full demo it ;) ;)", they never bother buying it, the developer is fucked over. The old ways of stopping warez are obsolete and you have probably even circumvented them in the past yourself; new ways such as requiring something like Steam are stepping in.

It's not like Half-Life 2 doesn't quite clearly have "requires internet connection" on the back of the box, anyway. Why did you buy it if you're still living in the 1990s? That's six years ago, just to remind you. As of last year, over 55% of households in the UK alone have internet access, with three fifths of them on broadband -- I'd imagine that pretty much all gamers fall into that percentage. Complaining about things requiring net access is a "little" outdated my friend.

I agree Mazy. But then, Valve are pretty terrible in general when it comes to promotional shots and stuff. They seem to be able to make anything look bad. D:

Valve has been surprisingly sharp with release dates since the HL2 catastrophe, so I remain optimistic. xD
