Defrag I think that to survive the arrival of TF2, you and your team really need to come up with a concise lists of points that make Fortress Forever different. I've no doubt that it'll be an excellent mod, but you need to communicate why to the players as early as possible.

I mean up until now I'd imagine that most of those following your mod have done so because it is of course a new Team Fortress game, but now there's an official contender on the scene they'll naturally be more drawn to that. Having features that sound downright enticing is what you need. Shit like those radio tags and turning sentries on enemies is what people must hear!

Perhaps you could come up with a short bullet point list of between five and ten things that sum up why it's worth checking out and stick it on the front page of the site or something. I mean, if someone wants to sum up to their friends why they should check out FF, they can't use a three paragraph explanation like you just posted. They need some quick, sharp incentives — especially now that "It's Team Fortress on Source" holds little weight.

You never know, maybe the two can exist peacefully.

Yeah. You could tell when they implemented those new models in TFC that they were heading in a more serious direction, and it just didn't feel right. All the classes looked really similar and people new to the game just couldn't tell from looking at them what role was what.

With TF2 they've clearly gone back to what they did with the original TFC models, which was to totally play up to the stereotypes of the roles. I mean, take one look at any of those characters and you know right away exactly what they are in pretty much every case. Could you really say the same about the models below if you hadn't ever played TFC before?

There's no doubt about it: the new style that TF2 will feature totally suits the game. I just hope it doesn't frighten off the masses, with them being reality craving bum bandits.

Yeah I have to admit, bundling it with Episode 2 does seem a bit strange. I mean considering the gravity of the title and the fact it was originally to be a standalone game, it seems like it's been demoted somewhat.

Hopefully the essentially free price won't be a reflection of its quality, but you have to wonder.

Then again, TFC was free and that was excellent, so there's still plenty of hope. I think any and all expectations of it being much more than a slightly evolved game of traditional TFC must be discarded though.

The original TF2 as we saw it was basically BF2 though, right Frie?

I'm personally glad they're (presumably) evolving what TF is known for: arcadey, crazy, team based fun. Perhaps a modern combat game with roles, voice communications and a commander would have been groundbreaking in 1999 (basically all TF2 had going for it), but now it's been done a million times.

And if you look at the information on Wikipedia about what TF2 was meant to be up until the last few days, you'll see that it practically reads like you'd expect the design document for BF2 to read. It's taken so long that the original goal has become redundant. And we've got BF2142 and Quake Wars coming soon which will further expand the serious role based military theme.

I guess the depths of time have clouded a lot of people's vision of how there really wasn't much to be excited about concerning TF2 until just now.

But is it accompanied by some kind of visual blockade so the player isn't dumbfounded by suddenly being unable to progress, or just a random invisible wall? The first is pretty fine as far as design goes as at least the player understands he's not mean to continue. The second is of course ridiculous and terrible design.

They mean clip boxes so you can't jump over the sandbags that are designed to only allow one way access, but by bringing over a prop or team member can be bypassed. Give Valve some credit.

Haha, they fixed the Argentain terrain bug. I don't know if you guys saw it, but basically you press against some cliff near the Allied spawn while proned and you fall under the displacements and can then go around shooting people up from beneath.

But all that other stuff sounds awesome. That machinima trailer that Valve did of the effects in DOD a few months ago was unbelievably cool, and I honestly wouldn't mind having them ingame too if it were an option.

Yeah, the original Day of Defeat had a very pronounced destruction game mode as of 1.0 I believe with numerous maps for it, and as I recall it was fairly popular. Glider in particular was really well done as far as general mapping and environment destruction goes for HL1 (entity nightmare), which is no surprise as Fuzzdad was an excellent mapper.

It wasn't actually called destruction though; the maps were prefixed with para_ instead of dod_ and you played as paratroopers. Really quite cool, though a lot of fans at the time didn't like the deviation from DOD's regular style.

Glad to see DOD:S is at least starting to grow a map portfolio that might make more people take it seriously. In comparison to the original, launching with four maps was pretty horrendous.

    Still a good game though.

    Quote from D3ads

I don't like the look of it all to be honest, it also looks like they copied the idea of Starship Titanic in visual style a bit, or maybe that's just me.

Needs more skulls, blood and demons??? Honestly D3, you need to broaden your horizons!

Looks cool and I'd be tempted to give it a go if it's deemed worthy by others, though I'm on the wall after seeing this:
