  • What's going on with your life?

Earlier today I randomly had the most excruciating pain I've felt in like 20 years in my abdomen, I was seriously in the foetus position on the floor sweating like shit and having to really focus on my breathing — and I was still in agony for like an hour.

Considering that my dad was in hospital for near-identical symptoms this week I found this fucking weird. However unlike his gallstone-caused pain which requires intervention, mine passed after taking indigestion pills, painkillers, and basically curling up.

So yeah, I was kind of freaking out. It was so painful I wouldn't have even made it to a taxi to A&E, and I was reluctant to phone an ambulance for what could turn out to be gas.

I do think it might have been some kind of gas, that or some short-lived poisoning. But wow the pain. Fuck. Hope that never happens again.

Dad's in hospital due to huge abdomen pain, on the way there now. Sounds like he'll be OK but I was terrified for a little while — losing my parents is definitely one of my #1 fears in life, and I seriously feel for those who've been through it.

City centre is always more expensive, I pay £650/month in Nottingham (city Crytek UK is in) and Crytek UK itself is based in a building that's all apartments above the first floor and a similar-sized flat to mine goes in there for £875/month.

Kotaku has done some further digging, it's not sounding great:

It seems like Crytek really needs a killer franchise. A glance at Wikipedia indicates that the company has eight(!) studios and has been around for 15 years, yet I can only think of two games that were legitimately awesome and really made the industry pay attention: Far Cry (2004) and Crysis (2007). While one of those has had Crytek-developed sequels, they didn't seem to resonate with people nearly as much as the original.

I'm not sure what Crytek is missing, all the ingredients for amazing games are there. How was Ryse not absolutely spectacular? Is there a void of people who truly get writing and gameplay within Crytek or what? Being technically accomplished is great, but perhaps the mists of time have caused some to forget that it wasn't actually the graphics that made Far Cry and Crysis as successful as they were — it was the excitingly open-ended gameplay and excellent mechanics, combined with an unusual and immersive setting.

While I hate to speculate in this way about something that could affect a number of people who I care about, it does seem to me like Crytek is rapidly approaching the point where a correction is needed. The company is disproportionately big compared to the hits it's releasing (or not), so unless some big engine deal is made with a major developer/publisher or a seriously intense game comes out it's hard to see how Crytek can avoid shedding some of its studios and/or staff.

The single-player experience probably isn't that long, and of course the multi-option heist missions will make at least one replay quite fresh. I put a crazy amount of time into GTA5 but most of that was just dicking around and doing collectable stuff.

I probably won't go ahead and replay the single-player any time soon though, even when I get it for PS4. Instead I'll be playing the single-player DLC that's been promised, plus Online for the first time — which should have lots of heists and shit by then.

It's great, if you've ever doing a marathon I'd seriously pick up a GameCube or Wii just to experience it. Some people think the cutscenes were a bit over-engineered, but I fucking love them. I'll always have a soft spot for MGS1 as it got me into the series way back in 1998, but the original really does look like ass in comparison:

What's weird is the voice acting is all way better even though it's mostly the same actors — it's really obvious with Revolver Ocelot in that video. Just an excellent remake that preserved everything great about the original and improved it in numerous ways IMO.

I hear you can get it running on Dolphin (GameCube emulator) in HD pretty well nowadays.

It just seems so bizarre. The original performances were iconic and have been consistent going right back to 1998. I've resigned myself to it happening now and I'm pretty sure I'll get into it after just 10 minutes of play, but I don't think I'll ever agree with it being the right decision.

What's really weird is that Troy Baker is seemingly just trying to emulate the original performance — so why not just use the damn original? It's like changing Homer Simpson's voice or something, after this long and this much fandom you just... don't.

Oh well, let's just enjoy some CLASSIC OCELOT:

Doing an MGS 1–4 marathon soon in preparation for MGS5, which will probably just about be out by the time I get through them, lol.

It seems to me that the perfect example of how the pad could be useful is the DS. That console has shitloads of great games that make the second screen a useful part of the experience, i.e. somewhere to show HUDs, maps, inventories, etc so that the main screen can be as cinematic as possible.

I think some Wii U games are doing this and that's really what it's best at. Anyone expecting it to be some revolutionary feature that allows drastically different play styles like with the Wii will be disappointed, but as far as enhancing everyday gaming goes it seems to be a success.

I think the whole 'gaming without a TV' will appeal to few adults, but I'd imagine that kids enjoy being able to use it in a household where there's constant competition for the TV.

  • Well what do you know! The Sequel!

Aww that's awesome, congratulations and kudos for not losing your mind with all the work that goes into being 100% responsible for a baby — something I can only imagine the difficulty of.

I'm sure sleepless nights and years of heart attacks are on their way, but it'll all be worth it to watch your creation blossom into someone who will make the world a better place. Be sure to take as much time as you need right now, there's nobody more important than that bab (And your wife I guess!).

Also, LMAO that is awesome Koko! It's pretty freaky seeing the father count increasing here, one day everyone will have to meet up with themselves plus kids in MapCore gear for the weirdest gathering ever. I don't think I'll be joining the club any time soon, but it's wonderful to hear from those who have.

I really like her actually, I find her understated ruthlessness quite terrifying. I mean, in the space of seven episodes she's:

    Quote
    • Killed her son-in-law
    • Ordered the killing of a mother and child related to her son-in-law
    • Tried to kill her daughter
    • Blown up a hospital full of innocents
    • Most likely going to kill the US President
    • Most likely going to blow up shitloads of people in London

I mean, she's not fucking around. I don't think she's the end game, though; 24 likes pulling back the curtain on a higher-level enemy about halfway through a season, so I guess we're about there now. I guess what happened during episode seven is the set-up of that...

Also, I did not realise until this week that Kate's sometimes-partner is...
