I have to agree that I'm getting tired of seeing 'beta' thrown around so much. Beta is meant to be the state the game's in before it's gone through final quality assurance and everything; how on earth can that be the case if the beta's hitting only weeks before the final release?
EA recently did beta testing of the upcoming Battlefield 2142 patch (has a new map and shit), and the community is actually shocked that it's been over a month since the beta testing without a release. I mean, the developers do have to actually address all the problems found in the beta testing; it's not a one-day fix -- that's the point. So now EA and DICE are getting loads of shit because they're doing it properly (which is admittedly a rarity when it comes to EA quality assurance).
It's just giving gamers a false perception of what beta actually is, and they expect something that's not very buggy and for the final release to come almost immediately afterwards.
Bleh.

Yeah, I have to agree that makes no sense Taylor. I was originally under the impression you'd be using something like your Wiimote to participate in these violent scenes, but then discovered that like before you just watch them as a reward. As such, like you say we're taking no active role in the slaying and so it should be treated just like a film.
Heck, in that respect Rockstar were quite smart -- yet still got censored.

Yeah, lamery. I mean I personally don't get off on the whole brutal, graphic killing thing, but if movies like this (this was shown in the UK and also contains a one-shot 10-minute rape scene, but not in this video; it takes about a minute for the violence to kick in) can get away with it then games clearly should.
That said, the uncensored PlayStation 2 version was leaked onto Internets a few weeks ago, albeit in a buggy, beta state. If seeing the original means that much to you it might be worth tracking down.

And heh, Fortress Forever.

It's really tragic that even if FF is great, chances are that TF2 will just obliterate its (potential) fan base by plundering them all with its beautiful art direction and its quite significantly evolved/changed gameplay.
If only FF had come along in, say, 2005. Would have been a great two years of reliving my TF© days.

I wasn't being aggressive, or at least that wasn't how it was meant to be interpreted.

I was just genuinely amazed that people could see what I saw as a great deal as a bad one. Almost like paying for a meal at your fast food place of choice, being given a free burger/sub/whatever, and then complaining about it.

Kind of concerns me too, but I keep reminding myself that a lot (if not all) of the guys who worked on TF and TFC are now working at Valve and working on TF2. Comforts me a lot.

If the Black Box ever came out instead of just being a tentative product it would have had to have been cheaper, but as it never made it past the announcement stage it doesn't really hold much relevance.
I'm guessing their original plan was to let loyal Steam users have the Black Box and get the three new games (Episode Two, Portal, TF2) for cheaper, but later realised that letting people get so much value for less than the cost of one retail game might be a little stupid (they would have originally been charging you for one episode and bundling Portal and TF2). So they back-pedalled and went with the 'charge the price of one retail game for these and then give them HL2 and Episode One too' model.
At the end of the day, most people will be paying roughly the price of one retail game (even less if you happen to be in the UK and buying through Steam thanks to the conversion rate
) for Half-Life 2, Episode One, Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. That is one hell of a deal, albeit more so for those who never experienced HL2 the first time round.Everyone's free to make their own mind up, though. I just think to see £25 as a hard deal for what's included, even if you've already played HL2 and Episode One to death, is crazy. £25 is peanuts!
-
Are you seriously that dense or are you just acting?
It's a free game included in the bundle. You're paying exactly the same as you would have paid regardless of whether or not HL2 was bundled; it's simply a bonus for all those people who might have missed out the first time around (or were too young).
You're not paying extra to have it in there. What is so difficult to understand about this? HL2 is now officially an old game, and since it probably doesn't sell particularly well anymore Valve is just getting some extra mileage out of it with a generous offer.
I mean, jesus. The things some of you people find to bitch about truly bewilders me.
Edit: Man, shotgun of replies got in before me.

Anyone who seriously complains about the price of the Orange Box needs their head looking at, and also a massive slap.

I think anything that adds replay value to a game is good, and if achievements manage to do that for a lot of people then it's hard to seriously criticise them. After all, it's not like anyone's forcing anyone to get them.

... in six days if you pre-order, plus a copy of 'Peggle Extreme'.

But on the flip-side, common sense is something most people have. I mean, I've no real experience beyond college with making a feature film, but I sure as hell realise you're not going to make one by relying on charity work and the open source model (hell knows how they managed to compare that to game production).
Perhaps a good mod, but a good game? Piss off.

Quote from Fletch
People still play PC games?Seriously, get a freaking console already. It's a quarter of the cost and you get 100% compatibility.
And a total absence of games which've literally provided me with dozens of hours of fun such as Battlefield 2(142) and Company of Heroes.
Once again, it's all about genres. The genres you like most will almost certainly dictate your preference, because even today FPS and RTS games pretty much feel like ass on consoles, and especially in the case of FPS games I just don't enjoy them in the same way because that huge tactile precision element is gone.
Obvious solutions are for keyboards/mice to be used on consoles, but in most cases you don't really want to be using those when you're sat in an area your console is likely to be: your lounge. Plus the current state of actual implementation of them on consoles is so laughable that it's hardly worth considering as a realistic option.
I mean, cost obviously isn't a problem. I could buy every single current generation console on top of the high-end PC I have, and still not feel the sweat. I'm guessing the same goes for anyone who has a job. The point is I just prefer playing the type of games I like to play on the PC. I don't have the spare time to exhaustively play all four platforms, so I go with the one I enjoy most. Simple!
I do find it somewhat amusing and intriguing how at the end of the day, the whole PC/console argument essentially comes down to peripherals and environment. Perhaps controls like what the Wii provide will be the key to closing the divide between consoles and PCs. Heck, if pointing devices became a standard implementation there's no reason all three companies' consoles plus the PC (thanks, Logitech) couldn't enjoy a standardised control method.
After all, even though the PC has already overtaken console graphics with ease as usual, the divide isn't so big that it'd really detriment your fun to play it on the console's hardware rather than a top-end PC. I absolutely believe that the 360 and PS3's reliance on input devices that seem increasingly archaic is the only thing holding them back from being truly dominant in every single genre. We need that tactile pointing precision.
It's just a shame the Wii is indeed as inferior as it is with regards to hardware, meaning it can't really be used as a solid proof of concept of just how much impact the pointing device could have on the types of games we see on the PC/360/PS3. The Wiimote also has sensitivity issues which might piss off mouse lovers. Perhaps the next generation will hold the key.
