I'm really not keen on the art direction in this. Even though the maps are technically created really well, they just don't seem to come together into a cohesive, vibrant whole like the maps in the older UT games did.

I mean some of the older maps were pieces of art in their own right, but these just seem a bit grimy and shit.

I moved on from the UT gameplay a long time ago though so unsurpirisngly I didn't enjoy playing it much. Too fast and too many deaths from guys I never even saw for me.

When is the BioShock patch coming ffs? I've been holding off playing it so I can enjoy whatever performance and beauty enhancements may be contained.

Yeah, I really hope Vivendi push it hard. With Jack Black's central involvement and the whole game having a rock 'n' roll theme they at least have a pretty easy concept to summarise. Psychonauts wasn't exactly easy to sum up in one sentence and make it sound as great as it was.

I'm guessing a major part of Psychonauts' sales inadequacy was Majesco publishing it, who seemed to fuck up any large game they tried to sell; indeed, before Psychonauts they were only really known as a publisher of those budget games you see in all the bargain bins -- a totally different business and marketing model.

A lot of it takes place in big, epic outdoor areas and the models/textures are higher poly/res?

    Really looking forward to this.

It's a Tim Schafer game so the chances of it not being awesome are very slim, immediately putting this game high on my anticipation list.

Strange, I have that same card, and I get all kinds of weird artifacts, text glitches, etc. I'd always thought the card's ram was dying.

Well you can't rule the RAM out entirely if the card hasn't always done it on your hardware. If it has though, you could be suffering from the well-known issues between the 6600 GT and VIA/SiS motherboards (and probably others).

I used to get artefacts on my display exactly like that back with my GeForce 6600 GT in 2004. It was because the card was incompatible with my motherboard and after six months of no drivers fixing it I just got a new motherboard. I also got really nasty warped polygons too, though.

A driver incompatibility (with other parts of your hardware) could theoretically cause the same issue, so I'd suggest either rolling back to the last ones that worked, or using the latest beta drivers.

NVIDIA beta drivers often end up 'promoted' to official status if they're deemed to have changed significantly enough; for example, the 163.69 on the official site was exactly the same as the beta 163.69 I was using weeks earlier. If they do have to make changes they simply use a different number.

The latest beta is 163.76, so I suggest trying that just in case it's fixed a particular issue that was causing your problem:

    XP: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1752

    Vista 32-bit: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1748

    Vista 64-bit: http://downloads.guru3d.com/download.php?det=1749

NVIDIA's beta drivers are almost always exactly as reliable/etc as the official ones. As you've discovered, the official ones themselves aren't necessarily totally reliable.

If that fails, just roll back to the last ones that worked and wait for a new beta. I doubt there's much you can do to fix display corruption as it's usually caused at such a deep level.

Yeah, not surprising they're getting big.

Although this doesn't apply to the 360, don't forget PS3 games come on fucking gigantic Blu-Ray discs, which is like 20-40GB; this means developers are going to start getting used to including superb quality assets, especially with the PC having the brute strength to show massive-resolution textures and such.

They aren't going to expect PC gamers to have Blu-Ray players any time soon, but they're probably going to more often than not span their games over multiple DVDs and just have them installed onto your HD so they have as much room to play with as they would on the PS3.

Only speculation of course, but I can't see this not happening. Although really, with current hardware I don't think they'll come close to actually needing a full Blu-Ray disc.

Before the thread was moved you were told the ban was for posting shemale pictures or something like that.

It was also brought up that you repeatedly asked that your account be banned/removed. Accounts aren't deleted here, but they can certainly be disabled or banned.

I know nothing more beyond this.

  • TFT vs CRT

    • Thrik

Yes, LCD technology has progressed a lot since the early days, especially because the technology is used in televisions which are a massive mainstream market, and thus receive ungodly amounts of research/development funding.

At the moment you can get an affordable 22-inch Samsung LCD with a 2ms response time (the 226bw), which is basically unbeatable. The majority of mainstream LCDs have a 6ms or 8ms response time, which is also very good.

You certainly won't see any heavy motion blur ghosting like people were reporting years ago unless you're using a seriously cheap monitor.

As for the refresh rate thing, the whole argument is irrelevant on an LCD. Unlike a CRT, LCD monitors overlay the last frame with a new one, meaning there's never any flickering. This is different to a CRT, which literally flashes to black between each frame, thus causing the horrific flickering effect.

LCDs are infinitely better for your eyes. They're also a lot sharper too; you will probably be taken aback if you use an LCD for a while, then go back to a CRT and see how blurry it is in comparison.

The article says it does have 16-player multiplayer KFS, so I drew the connection based on that. The older games were more popular for their MP than their SP from what I remember, so I thought they'd put some heavy emphasis on it.

Graphically it's very nice, but if it's a budget title I expect the single-player campaign will be very lacking. Considering the earlier Soldier of Fortune games were very well known for their multiplayer, they'll probably put a lot of focus on that.
