It doesn't really make a difference what platform it was on Steppenwolf... sales are sales. Whether it's on the 360 or the PC, the money put into development needs to be made back and profit. It doesn't matter if most PC games also sell relatively badly.

My general theme here is that the PC platform is very small in comparison to the consoles', and I fear it'll either fizzle out or most decent games will be predominantly console-oriented (we're already seeing many signs of this). The fact is that Crysis hasn't sold that many units thus far, which means the millions sank into its development may not be as worthwhile as was hoped.

Consequently that could mean no more Crysis (publishers won't take the risk again). I think they'll probably do what they did with Far Cry though and release technologically inferior versions for the consoles.

I just used 'proper' as a synonym for 'technologically more akin to other conventional games of its era'.

You clearly know what I mean.

Oh man, Duke is looking like he's aged.

I hope they approach it like Die Hard 4 where he's all old and struggling to keep up with this amazing new world.

Yes you can -- the numbers I quoted are per platform. Call of Duty 4 solid 1.57 million units on the 360 alone; it sold a further 444,000 on the PS3.

    We don't know.

I've just looked into the HTML source and there're only 414 lines on this page, and I have no idea what page you were looking at when you got the error. It could help if you can copy/paste the HTML source when you next get the error.

The exact error message you get could help, too.

Sorry st0lve, but anyone who doesn't think Batman Begins is absolutely fantastic clearly has a flawed brain. It is pretty much ubiquitously loved and is 98th in the IMDB top 250 user-rated films.

I can't see anything that could be causing it, then.

The virus warning in the screenshot above refers to a script, which almost always means Javascript. This is why I still think it's the viruses thinking the Javascript is a virus when in fact it's harmless.

This is a fresh installation of phpBB so I really can't see what else could be doing it. Unless you guys can pinpoint the problem area by looking at your virus software more (ie: the script or image causing it) closely there's realistically nothing we can do. At this point, "I'm getting it too" does not help.

Each virus software also seems to think the 'virus' is something completely different, none of which bring up anything helpful on Google.

Yeah, that's why I said it's a shame it didn't come out when games like this were more common. Back then this was considered a proper game.

Although a proper game is more like $50-$70 here, not $30 -- that's actually not terrible, and about the same price as Team Fortress 2. Guess it depends on your tastes.

I agree. I know that you can use Javascript to do it, but it's still automating the decision for a user. Left click is meant to open links, middle click is meant to open links in new windows. It is an incredibly basic and obvious function, and means people can easily choose between the two. The two buttons operating in this way has pretty much become a browser standard now, and is also why the W3C removed it from the HTML specification.

If you make both buttons open links in new windows then that destroys the point of the functionality in the first place, and is bad practice for any webmaster.

Maybe they will bundle crysis with a lot of new gfx cards? When you create a game that doesnt run proberly on so many machines there must be a strategy behind it. Nobody knows what kinda deals crytek has with hardware manufacturers.

You see very eager to assume there's some magical strategy that'll make everything better again.

The fact is that it's had poor launch sales, and history has taught us that when that happens the game generally doesn't sell too well overall. It might make a decent amount of sales over the months/years, but so do the games that have great launches like Call of Duty 4 ( which will continue to enjoy many sales following its 1.57 million launch units, possibly beating Crysis' launch figures every month).

The launch period is absolutely critical. All it can really hope for is a console release, which'd essentially be a fresh launch and give it the opportunity to become an actual success.

I loved Fahrenheit, but agree that the 'dance dance revolution' actions where pretty ridiculous and didn't add much to the game at all.

I do think budget and deadlines played a factor in a lot of Fahrenheit's unimaginative areas though, because it was clear that some stuff was awesome and some stuff was a bit iffy, particularly towards the end (apparently they just ran out of time and had to rush it together).

With more time and money I think they'll iron out the stuff that wasn't so enjoyable in Fahrenheit. The reviews and player comments were full of feedback about it so it's not like they aren't aware that most people didn't like those bits.

Definitely a title to watch out for.

Batman Begins is one of the best films ever created, so I'm really looking forward to this sequel. My dad still hasn't seen it because he thinks it'll be like the more comic book style of the older Batman movies, which is something I constantly aim to change.

A glorious, epic film. I really fancy rewatching it now.

Ok, if someone wishes to continue borrowing my copy of Orange Box for the 360, someone needs to make sure links open in new tabs/windows. STAT.

Sites shouldn't really be doing that anymore which is why a lot of software doesn't do it by default, and in the latest XHTML web standards it's not even valid code. The idea is that they open in the same tab by default, and you middle click links if you want them in new windows.

It'd be a shame to make this lovely new forum with its lovely new design have invalid HTML!

The only thing on the index page that I can see causing a false positive is the Javascript that preloads images and such. That's generated by phpBB though and I don't think you can get rid of it without causing problems somewhere.

Is it just one shit virus software reporting this or is it happening with lots of software? And have you tried other phpBB 3 boards (which presumably also have the Javascript) to see what happens?

"I'm getting it again" is honestly 500% unhelpful and doesn't help us track down the problem at all. Unless you want to keep enjoying the detections you must look into it a little.

Excellent work. Just need to swap the side the white border is on now.

This colour scheme looks even better on my high-quality 24-inch monitor at home. The colours are so subtle I think cheaper LCD monitors struggle to make everything look distinct; on this monitor everything, including the posts, is quite clearly a different colour. At work it was a bit harder to tell.

Yeah, filthy warezing fucks definitely don't help matters. There's basically a culture on the PC where warezing games isn't seen as bad, to the extent where even my grandparents just assume that 'PC game' equates to 'free'. It's sad because despite the PC as a platform quite clearly dying (even all this digital distribution isn't getting anywhere near the success of the consoles), people still carry on doing it -- even people who love PC gaming.

I do hope Crysis sells well because I really enjoyed my limited time with it. Perhaps we'll see variations of it popping up on consoles later on like Far Cry did, which I'm guessing sold more on consoles overall than it did on the PC.

Typically the launch period is when most sales occur though, especially around this time of year when people are stocking up for Christmas. Very saddening.

Yeah, I was referring to the NPD data.

To put it into context, in the same data report Call of Duty 4 on the 360 got 1.57 billion units sold, and a further 440,000+ units on the PS3. It pretty much makes Crysis and UT3 look like a drop in the ocean.

I wouldn't feel too bad though as the consoles do generally have a bewilderingly larger audience. BioShock also failed to do particularly well on the PC from what I recall, but got a respectable sales count on the 360. The sad reality is that the PC has a massively smaller base, excluding those who gravitate towards the MMORPGs. People in general just find consoles to provide better value, and new gamers tend to start out with consoles anyway. The idea of playing games on a computer is definitely fading, even though it's still large enough to be considered 'vibrant'.

No report is truly accurate, but when we're talking about NPD numbers below 100,000 that's unfortunately a sure sign that things aren't going too well.
