  • iPhone - The next best mobile gaming device?

    • Thrik
    • March 7, 2008 at 1:27 PM

I predict it'll be like every single other gaming/phone hybrid, and completely flop with regards to penetrating the general gaming audience. I think it will do a good job of giving those who already have an iPhone something extra to do, but won't convince many people to buy it with gaming in mind.

The phone itself isn't really too great with regards to value for money, so it's not really going to convince anyone who wasn't already prepared to (over)pay for it to do so. People could buy a Nokia phone or something that far surpasses the iPhone and a DS Lite or PSP, and still pay a comparable price to one iPhone.

It sounds OK on paper, but then so did the NGage to a lot of people, and the 'mobile phone gaming revolution' has been "just around the corner" for years upon years now. My gut feeling is that people won't bite.

Ace. Yeah, I missed it -- I rarely check the engine forum.

Looks good, though. I ordered the full version of Crysis the other day so I should have it soon; the demo was a bit stuttery at times on 'High', so I look forward to giving your config a go to enjoy a more optimised experience.

My specs are pretty much in line with what you recommend. My 1920x1200 resolution is the killer in most games, though.

I only ever once got 'Holy Shit' while playing and never achieved it again. I was very excited and proud of myself.

I have to admit that although the trailer itself is really cool (Pirate Bay ), the game itself looks almost completely unappealing to me. The gameplay seems pretty damn basic, like an extremely diluted version of Battlefield (194)2(142) with the depth/skill taken out. The graphics also don't excite me at all, looking nowhere near as stylish as Team Fortress 2 but still managing to come off as a copycat (whether that's true or not -- but it probably is).

It might be free, but if I personally want to spend some time enjoying the Battlefield experience it'll be either Battlefield 2142 or the eventual Battlefield 3 I play.

Anything that's tagged with the term 'casual' tends to completely turn me off, though.

Heh, cool. I was actually going to say it has a very Battlefield feel to it, before I even noticed you mention Battlefield.

The official line is that it was too expensive for them to run.

High-quality, high-definition content is a costly beast -- and making money off it is tricky. It's even stretching Google to keep YouTube running smoothly, and it still has problems quite frequently.

People often forget that thousands of dollars per month go into hosting services like this. The popular ones are the most likely to be forced into closure (I can very much see Vimeo eventually going the way way, although I've been saying that about Vimeo for a couple of years and they haven't gone down yet).

Yeah, it's not perfect. I mean, if you compare it against exactly the same thing in real life it's obviously going to look inferior. It's still a engine that has to run on (the high end of) today's hardware. Anyone who says this isn't a good achievement wants slapping around, though.

I did notice the disappearing teapots sometimes while watching it. A bit silly.

To my eyes they're very clearly small models. If you look at the non-person part they just have a 'this is a small scale' look to them. The characters themselves also look model-like, in particular the eyes of the one on the left (that kind of reflection simply doesn't happen on real human eyes). The hair of the character on the left also looks like model hair (ie: fibre material).

The most telling part (excluding the girls themselves) is the ground on the left model. It has a texture that looks like it's a table surface of some kind.

If I had to guess, I'd say both are no bigger than a human hand.

    Sorry Sentura.

That stupid chicken spoils the scene imho and some of the textures could have done with some work but other than that, there is no better engine capable of such graphics, only 4 years from now and we'll be closer to realism than ever.. roll on Cryengine 3

There was a dog in the original advert where the chicken was put in Crytek's version. I wouldn't say it spoils anything at all.

Well, all that means is those millions of flying teapots are animated traditionally. It doesn't make it any less impressive IMO as the scene looks great even without all the teapots.

I don't think that's really bad going since you can still tell a computer-generated film in most cases when you see one. For a game engine this is superb, and that's the point. Nobody's saying they've crossed the border of rendering reality.

Oh fuck me, that's amazing. I guess we now have our first real proof of concept for how well the engine can handle urban environments when done properly.

Just to clarify, the end of the video confirms that it is real time, but the specifications of the machine aren't given.
