It's not quite that simple. They're not really redoing it as such, but instead creating a new film based on the original comic stories.

One thing that was notable about Batman Begins is that it interpreted the comics in a very different way to the older films, and while some stuff was similar the backstories of just as many things were completely different. Indeed, one of the biggest differences is how exactly Gotham City itself became what it is, and how Bruce is intertwined with that. I suspect it'll be the same in Dark Knight, with the origin of the Joker, his motives, etc, being incomparable to the older Batman film.

Utopia is the word I meant. It's supposed to be a very perfect, ideal city — but at the price of an extremely controlling government. At least, that's what was in the magazine articles I saw.

Both Batman Begins and Dark Knight are a complete reboot, similarly to Casino Royale, meaning that any previous movies never happened as far as they're concerned.

Batman Begins had a much harder and more believable tone to it than the older films, almost worlds apart in general feel. I personally think the new world created in these newer films is much more appealing, as it feels like an actual world where these insane villains and a guy in a suit could feasibly exist. The older Batman films had a much more comic-like edge to them.

Have you not seen Batman Begins? I highly recommend it, and it's pretty much ubiquitously seen as an amazing film. It's rated #103 out of all films on IMDB (the only Batman film even in the top 250, and neighbours with films like Jaws and Full Metal Jacket), which is a sign of just how much people like it.

Looks awesome... but, what's this game about? Climbing skyscrapers and stuff?

The general theme I read is that in a utopian city where everything is controlled (including the decoration, clearly), the only way for criminals and such to get messages to each other is via on-foot couriers. You're one of these couriers.

Other than that, it's an FPS. It's just one with (much) less emphasis on the 'shooter' part, and more on the actual traversal of the world. To a certain extent it's translating innovations in third-person games (Assassin's Creed's amazing climbing, Max Payne's dive shooting, etc), which no developer has successfully done yet. I also believe it's not a free-roaming game, so there'll still be a strong plot with a fixed narrative.

Ugh, if they have 'momentum' in it...well...thats just going to be annoying. The ability to stop when I want, not 10 paces later over the buildings edge is something I prefer not to have in my games. Its going to be a real fine balance between super annoying and something new, perhaps why nobody has added this so far to any FPS.

Or perhaps nobody's been able to do it in a way that's actually good. A lack of past success with certain technologies is no reason to discard any future attempts. If you seriously think the way games currently do first-person motion is perfect, well... I couldn't disagree more.

And of course when we all have virtual reality headsets in a few years, such realistic movement, momentum, and weight will be superb.

You can't say whether or not you prefer something without having tried it. That's such an awful attitude to go into a game with — especially for a developer.

I didn't notice anything particularly beyond what I've seen in most FPS games, mechanics-wise.

Read my last post Ginger. It's not the graphics or even the world that's primarily impressing people. It's not a particularly hyped game either. The clinical utopian city it's set in is a cool concept, but it's far from being the thing that catches my eye first.

I think it's worth clarifying that everything in the video is actually controlled by the player, and not just a sequence of canned animations.

I think your game might look a bit too dark for a lot of people to enjoy d3, forcing them to turn their brightness up or just not see a lot of your details. I may have a well-configured monitor, but many people don't. Even one of my work monitors kind of obscures a lot of the detail I saw in that shot at home (hence why I'm mentioning it).

I suggest experimenting with using stronger lighting a bit more, kind of like how Valve does. If you look at their dark areas they're generally not actually dark, but textures and shadows are used cleverly to give that impression. For example in your picture above you could give it more definition by having moonlight illuminating it more, but having enough shadowed areas to still feel like it's a night scene. For your indoor areas you could have moonlight coming in through windows, or some shitty flickering lights, etc.

In short, you need more contrast. Contrast is one of the best ways of immediately spicing up any art, and will make your scenes look so much better. Some clever lighting may even help hide the game's engine more.

    Someone running. Wow.

It's more the fact that it transcends the level of environment interaction seen previously in FPS games, which've pretty much remained the same for years and years. Sure, we've had destructable environments and lots of physics-driven objects to throw around, but let's be honest — those things made their debut in FPS games about eight years ago!

A game is finally trying to break down the conventions and allowing you to actually climb anything you see, possibly going even further than Assassin's Creed. And because it's first-person, you feel much more intimately involved. Indeed, as I said above this is meant to be the first game that gives you the feel of controlling an actual body — momentum, weight, and all. That's why people are excited, if not for this game then for the genre implications as a whole.

I will admit the trailer could be a lot more exciting, but this one is clearly designed to sell the work they've been doing on the player physics rather than the game itself. I'm sure more plot-relevant trailers will come in the future. Being a community full of game developers though, this is exactly the kind of trailer it takes to excite something like MapCore.

I definitely think this is going to be something special. Been following it for a while and if nothing else, the way DICE are trying to push forward the mechanics of FPS (which've hardly evolved in a long time) will be great. From what playtesters have said, this is pretty much the first FPS where you actually feel like you're controlling the weight and momentum of a human body, rather than just a weighted camera with a gryoscope as most FPS games feel like.

Even if the game itself is poor — although unlikely considering the developers — I imagine its innovations will push forward the genre in general.

I thought the entire meta-customisation aspect of San Andreas was shit — and the eating/stamina stuff was even worse. I'd take a strongly written character with bags of personality over a puppet that I can customise every last detail of any day.

The detail and capabilities in the world are definitely not downgraded from San Andreas. There have, however, been removals of the more annoying aspects of San Andreas such as the lame body building, etc.
