  • Pointn'click Adventure Background Art - Style Test

I think the character does generally fit, but he needs more shading (flat shading) just to give him a bit more depth. I don't think the more cartoony style for him is bad (Curse of Monkey Island pulled this type of combination off to great effect), he just needs to blend in a little more.

    Awesome background art, though.

No Casino Royale is not much better then the Brosnan Bonds. Personaly i felt that when Bond reanimated his own heart in Casino Royale was one of the lowest points in the whole Bond franchise. Even Brosnan Bond firing a soviet tank while he drives it wasn't as ridiculous.

While the realism of the self-defibrillation is arguable, it's not like stretching the limits of technology and such is exactly something new to the Bond series. To say it's one of the lowest points in the whole franchise seems absolutely ludicrous, especially considering the stuff we've seen in the Brosnan films (invisible car that also makes stuff behind it invisible) and the classics (MOONRAKER). I thought the whole scene leading up to and including the defibrillation was good and great drama.

I'm going to reiterate that IMO Casino Royale was better than most of the Brosnan films, although I continue to think GoldenEye and Tomorrow Never Dies were great films. If you disagree, well fair enough — I don't mind if you're part of that minority.

I don't know how anyone can take Casino Royale and say it isn't a great film in its own right; its quality as a film seems indisputable to me, with the critics backing that assertion up. I don't think many people will argue that Bond got totally ridiculous with the Pierce Brosnan films, but that's exactly what Casino Royale was meant to correct. Regardless of why many people went to see it (obviously tradition played a role), it is a good film.

And just to clarify because there is some confusion about this, Casino Royale was a reboot of the Bond franchise in the same way that Batman Begins was a reboot of the Batman franchise; it had a completely different tone to the Brosnan era, and had much more in common with the older films' class and overall atmosphere IMO. Try not to include it when saying something like "modern Bond movies", because that's pretty much on par with describing "modern Batman movies" and including Batman Forever.

Been getting into the online stuff today. It adds a whole extra dimension playing even the stock levels with other people, and you can dick around a lot more and have a lot of fun. And I continue to be amazed at the quality and variety of the stock levels, and also the editing tools (I've seen just about every mechanic seen in Mario/DKC/etc done thus far — any many that're new to LBP).

    Quote from Sentura

come to think of it, my only gripe is the narrator. in no way can you switch off the narrator, and with the localized version, i'll have to sit through some danish guy blabbing on and on about something or other... and it just pisses me off royally.

It's a shame you don't get the English narrator: Stephen Fry essentially reprising his role at the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy narrator. It's genuinely funny and really suits the feel of LBP imo.

Does doing anything like changing your PS3's regional options adjust it? You'd think with Blu-Ray they could fit multiple translations on. Guess they could just as easily not have done, though.

I don't understand how CAD is better. It's just not funny, even when it's not wasting time with silly romance/tragedy stories. At least Penny Arcade knows what it wants to be, and delivers some fantastically biting commentary on the industry at times.

The story mode alone is awesome and like the previews said it can definitely stand up as a side-scrolling platform game in its own right. I was surprised at all the little minigame levels there are too. I'd imagine you could do nothing except play the stock levels and the better half of the user-created levels out there and still more than easily get your money's worth.

With that said, the editing tools are truly astounding. The depth of the tools is extremely impressive; the only thing more impressive is that they've managed to keep it totally intuitive and easy to use. It never feels like you're overwhelmed, yet there's so much power — there's apparently nothing in the stock levels/trailers that you can't create yourself.

There's also a hell of a lot of polish to the game, which is refreshing as a lot of recent games have felt weirdly sloppy to me. The way the interface, controls, etc work is extremely well thought out; the music is beautiful; the narrator (Stephen Fry!) is superbly entertaining; and it's just generally a really slick game.

It's doing exceedingly well on MetaCritic, incidentally:

10/10 from Edge? God, man. I think anyone who doesn't give this game a go is certifiably mental.

I think it's mostly down to people wanting to put their weight behind a party they think will actually win. It's like in the UK we have many parties as you'd expect, but it's pretty much Labour vs Conservatives at election day and has been for decades.

Other parties are realistically going to take an awfully long time to gain anywhere near enough momentum to challenge either of the above, and probably not even in my lifetime, so I'm assuming most people choose to vote for their favourite of the two that stand a chance.

Pretty awesome if you liked Grim Fandango and/or would appreciate a glimpse into a true classic's creative documentation. To quote myself:

    Quote

Tim Schafer has just dropped a pretty awesome surprise on our laps to celebrate the 10th anniversary of Grim Fandango: the original Grim Fandango puzzle/design document.Written in 1996, this mostly-complete document details the cut-scenes and puzzles in the game. What makes this particularly fascinating is that it's packed with concept art and descriptions of scenes/puzzles that were cut from the game, giving us an insight into a slightly different Grim Fandango.

I don't know why you don't think anything will change. When has a new administration ever not changed things significantly? Just look how much the Bush administration has changed the world. Plus there's now a new party in power: the democrats, after being out for eight years.

I have to say that I was surprised by just how much of a landslide victory Obama enjoyed. I mean, 349 electoral votes to McCain's 162? McCain didn't even manage to reach 50% of Obama's success. Good to see the US can see who the clear choice is.

Merged your thread with the existing election thread, btw.

Very poor. If I want serious drama I'll read an actual comic drama, not one that's meant to be funny and about games.

Very impressed after playing the PS3 demo. I think this is the most comfortable first-person game I've played on a console yet, and it really does seem like they've managed to conquer the concept of translating the intricate player control of a third-person game into a first-person experience.

It does baby you a little, but I think if it were any trickier it'd lose the seamlessness and not seem so natural. I don't share Taylor's concerns about the animation being jerky or anything to be honest — I thought it was great and realistic.

This kind of feels like an FPS milestone to be honest. While the sheer flexibility of the player wouldn't fit into a lot of FPS games (I can't imagine a hulking great space marine moving around the world in such an gymnastic fashion), I can see a lot of the approaches in Mirror's Edge finding their ways into FPS games at large — even if it's just the basic stuff like sliding along the ground and vaulting over things.

Also it'll be fucking amazing if DICE themselves do some of this in the inevitable Battlefield 3.

It's not too bad because now you can install QuickTime without Apple's other shit like iTunes. Still don't like it, but I'd rather have it and be able to watch trailers — QuickTime has pretty much been the industry standard for trailers for years.

You can get an alternative though, which I believe is basically a hacked-up old version of Windows Media Player that can play QuickTime files.
