I think the structure is real and only looks right from the one perfect angle, but the water has to be CGI — there's no way it can work in the way that's depicted. The water and wheel do look kind of CGI-ish anyway. That or he's cleverly blended a few videos together, where in one the structure is held in such a way the water can run, and in another the wheel is spinning.

Elaborate and cool, whatever the case!

As someone who's never played a Diablo game I find the reactions to the new style kind of weird. The new artwork is clearly beautiful and looks fantastic, and just because something's colourful doesn't mean it can't have a dark, disturbing tone — I've seen a good few anime films that prove as such.

On a purely aesthetic note those screenshots linked above look really unimpressive to me, like any number of generic isometric RPGs released in the 90s. The original two Diablo games look OK but that style is going to struggle to stand out nowadays.

Clearly Blizzard's new direction is a way of both attracting new fans already familiar with their work and making the game stand out in an industry that's had more than enough dark, grey top-down games.

I personally kind of want to try Diablo 3 because I think it looks beautiful, even though I know almost nothing about the game. Can't say the same for its predecessors.

Throughout my entire time playing I was regularly thinking how much of an epic job it must been producing so many detailed environments crammed with detail/assets. Due to the pace of the game you blitz through them really quickly, and not just that but the game is also extremely long for a current-gen game.

... holy shit!!!!! That trailer is amazing! What is this, the week of spectacular trailers (*cough* Crysis 2)?

Game concept is really appealing too. Obviously we all love zombies but most games approach it in a well-equipped-hero and/or campy kind of way. This looks more like the 28 Days Later of the gaming world and that excites me. If it hits the aforementioned film's atmosphere of complete hopelessness and dread we have a winner.

Well someone needs to make all the stuff they need, so the money needs to come from somewhere — whether that be paying the company that supplies the UltraRocket2000 metal or the guy who has to dig the ore out in the first place. Until everyone is willing to work for free it'll never be costless.

Which is a shame because I really want to go cruise some galaxies.

I also haven't seen any convincing losses because of pirating. Seeing a lot of people pirate a game doesn't tell me weather or not pirating replaced a legal buy or pirating exposed them to a game they went ahead and bought. I'm also not seeing heavily pirated system be negatively affected by it

You never will, because there's no accurate way of measuring such things. One can only speculate.

However, it doesn't take much speculation to ascertain that if a large proportion of people who want to play a game simply download it for free rather than pay for it, that's going to have an impact on sales performance. If enough people do it, it has a large impact on sales performance. In an industry as volatile as the games industry, this is what contributes towards studios almost constantly being closed, people being made redundant, high-quality games never receiving sequels, the PC being treated as an afterthought, etc.

Bury your head in the sand and deny piracy has anything to do with all this if you like. But just remember that it's publishers who decide what games get developed and for what platforms, and if they think piracy is a large problem then this is going to have an impact on the kind of games you get to play.

Regardless of what you think I'm pretty much certain piracy has a large detrimental effect on at least the PC platform, which I've watched go from being great to being a fuckin' joke. I'm aware it's not the only reason, but it's definitely one of them.

The used game market is indeed an issue and one that's being attacked with things like one-time non-essential but highly desirable DLC codes and stuff. Quite a reasonable way of approaching the problem IMO.

Piracy is always going to be a problem and I can't honestly see any real solution to it, beyond providing excellent incentives to buy. This seems to be the approach publishers are shifting towards rather than crazy DRM. Steam for example makes buying, updating, and networking games so quick and easy I almost enjoy doing so.

However I do feel more strongly against pirates rather than used game buyers because most of the latter don't understand the implications, whereas pirates almost always do. There's absolutely no excuse for piracy if you're past school. While I can kind of sympathise with the 'I'm a student' argument, there's absolutely nothing stopping any student from getting a job and doing an honest day's work to pay for their games.

Excellent article on Destructoid there, pretty much sums up all the thoughts I've had regarding piracy for years. I have absolutely no tolerance for game piracy, at least if you're of working age. I'm glad he takes the time to tear apart the 'But it's not really stealing!' argument, which has been an annoyingly weak straw man thrown into piracy arguments so many times it's not even funny.

Of course the reason the leak hasn't been pirated too much is because everyone knows it's an inferior, outdated product and they're just waiting for the final release to pirate.

Wow, Seldoon's comments in this thread are kind of disgusting.

Why do you have such contempt for a developer that has always worked so hard to support the PC platform, even though most publishers/developers hardly bother with it due to the extensive piracy and hardware complications? Have you forgotten how Crytek themselves were burned with Crysis 1, which was widely reported to have been one of the most pirated games ever with a ratio of something like 15 illegal downloads per sale? If those people had bought it instead Crysis 1 would have been a much more profitable game, which is only good for us gamers because it means more similarly awesome games.

Christ, man. Have more support for your developers. It's almost like you're angry that Crytek dare be upset about the fact a project they've spent years slaving over has been leaked in an unfinished state. The way you're mocking them with the and such is downright shameful. It's one thing to be upset with publishers because they're often quite faceless and money-orientated, but to start attacking developers — the kind of passionate people this forum is full of — is another thing entirely.

Staying well away from this leak BS. I want to experience the awesomeness of the game myself. It almost feels like peeking through the window at a surprise birthday party while it's being set up.

Oh yeah CoD is far from a DoD equivalent, but the actual gunplay and such is very similar. Battlefield is definitely closer but obviously it's a huge game in comparison. It is unfortunate DoD's particular style is AWOL at the moment.

Personally I love Battlefield and it's officially become my replacement for years of DoD addiction. On a good server many of the principles that made DoD so awesome are present.

I really do miss DoD, though. Get so nostalgic thinking about those 2am games during the early/beta releases on the likes of Oslo, Hill, Caen, etc!

Well, to put it succinctly: gamers got bored of WW2. Can you blame them?

However the style of gameplay lives on in Call of Duty and Battlefield. I do miss DoD's unique flavour, but Battlefield delivers similar on a larger scale. CoD has too much emphasis on deathmatch for me.

Just go into your BIOS and get the temp there, software-based monitors often get it a bit wrong for reasons I can't fathom. This'll also mean you're seeing the actual temp it runs at idle (which should be in the 30s or 40s for a Q6600 which I also have) rather than once it's worked hard to initiate and run Windows.

Yeah I'll do that. Better spend a few bucks on a cheap case fan than having to buy another CPU. I didn't overclock it by the way.

Fun fact: I scavenged this CPU from my ex-work PC I bought when Ubisoft shut down

To clarify: by cooler they mean the big heatsink+fan that attaches to the CPU itself. Although Intel's stock Core 2 onwards coolers actually perform about as well as most third-party coolers in my experience, I dunno about AMD.

Also be sure your cooler is totally attached to the CPU — I once left one corner not pushed in properly and temps shot up. Also if a cooler is repeatedly the conducting gel on the cooler might rub away and stop being effective, again increasing temps.

    Stuff to keep in mind!

Hah, looked like Ron Perlman at 2:40.

I have to say I'm still uninspired by the overall look of the game; there's just something about the flatness and lack of character to the lighting and such that fails to please my eyes. The facial technology is just as incredible as before though, and IMO is a glimpse of a future where games will make extensive use of actual actors' faces — which will inevitably lead to actors becoming more involved with the marketing of games rather than merely voices in the credits.

Shouldn't cause any problems. If you have a new CPU it should work with both 32-bit and 64-bit Windows so you're unlikely to have a problem in that respect (at one time they only supported one or the other), and if you do need to reactivate Windows it shouldn't be a problem — normally takes more than one piece of new hardware to necessitate reactivation.
