That it does, looks sweet. Although I think the smaller, darker core of the earlier cube looks better.

That was my thinking Rick, sometimes a little ambiguity can be nice in a logo. Often logos aren't 100% clear when you look at them initially — it's only after a little thought you realise what they mean and go "Oh :-D". I do like the fact it's not blatantly a cube and is a bit more like an insignia, but I'm not necessarily settled on it.

With that said, making it so ambiguous people just assume it's a shield isn't good. I think experimenting with the angle or trying some kind of shading on the inner faces would be a great thing to try.

An incredible submission out of nowhere from arhurt! I agree that I'd like to see it a little more clear it's a cube with a core rather than a shield (drawing or implying inner faces seems like the best way as I like the fact the logo is symmetrical), and aligning the text vertically with the cube I also think would look better. But sweet! Looks great on other colours too which is something particularly important.

Creative freedom is allowed for superior aesthetics — not every extreme in the palette is represented in the current logo, nor need it be in any successor. :derp:

That idea above where you've got a cube with a planetary core in it is excellent. Too many excellent ideas you fuckers!!

I'm very glad someone is putting up a tribute to these people rather than just letting the death count remain a statistic. Shame many of the faces/names are missing, though.

I think it's more a case of the PS1 ones look like ass and there's no way to really sell people on them being a HD upgrade — people are already often showing disappointment at the fact a lot of HD re-releases have just been upscaled last-gen ports, never mind last-last-gen ports. A lot of last-gen games still look kind of good when upscaled and given some lighting tweaks (a la God of War Collection), but PS1 games look absolutely awful.

I know Kojima himself said the ancient look of MGS1 is what led him to not include it, and that he'd prefer to do a proper remake if he were to re-release MGS1 — although you have to ask why not just use the GameCube remake which IMO was superb (and directly overseen by Kojima contrary to popular belief; the cutscenes were originally perfectly reproduced like the rest of the game but Kojima himself wanted more theatrics), or at least use it as a template. Probably licensing issues but they could still (sneakily) use a lot of the assets I imagine.

Also it's worth bearing in mind you can get MGS1 and SH1 via the PSN Store, marketed strictly as a re-release rather than a HD version.

I just discovered that Twin snakes is apparently fully playable via emulation now, so it can be enjoyed in HD at fucking last. Probably as close as we're going to get to an MGS1 HD re-release in the remote future.

Yeah, gotta say this is incredibly tragic. That picture on the first page of this thread showing the victims put down like hunted animals was so chilling and brought to life just how horrific 80–90 people being shot dead in a relatively small space is, especially when they're just normal teens there to have a good time (about the same age as my sister, too young to have done anything to anyone).

The worst part is that he specifically targeted youths. I mean, that is so cowardly and lacking any kind of meaning — although it does an excellent job of instilling terror, which I guess is the point. Apparently his killing spree lasted an hour and a half. I mean, fuck. Just imagining how it must have felt to be in those peoples' shoes during that period of time is awful: hearing the shots, seeing your friends being picked off one by one, knowing there's nowhere to run and that he's going to take his time hunting you down. I mean, what the fuck goes through your mind?

I think the only silver lining is that the fucker didn't kill himself, because now he can at least explain his reasons rather than being yet another madman who committed an atrocity and then killed himself before anyone could ask why. But with the country's law apparently only allowing him to be imprisoned for like 20 years, I seriously hope they have a way of working around that because the thought of him ever walking the Earth again is frightening.

The manifesto is a very interesting revelation, shedding some real light on just how simultaneously crazy yet ingenious he was. Nobody saw it coming, and he planned it in such a way nobody could respond before he'd pretty much done everything he wanted to do. Here's a gaming-related snippet:

    Quote

"F[or] example, tell them that you have started to play World of Warcraft or any other online MMO game and that you wish to focus on this for the next months/year," Breivik writes. "This "new project" can justify isolation and people will understand somewhat why you are not answering your phone over long periods. Tell them that you are completely hooked on the game (raiding dungeons etc)."

Naturally he used this time to visit gun-friendly countries so he could practice for long periods of time without arousing suspicion, to purchase hardware, to plan his strategy, etc. Basically he mastered the art of massacring a huge number of innocent youngsters — the fact that he put so much time and thought into it is scary. The ultimate pre-meditated murder.

  • Amy Winehouse found dead at her home

    • July 25, 2011 at 10:43 AM

I've never really listened to much Winehouse, but after hearing her stuff played constantly the other day I have to admit her singing and music is superb. I wrote her off as another one of those female pop icons whose music is largely uninspiring, but she's actually the real deal. Was, rather.

It is a sad waste of talent and I think the amount of venom lots of people have shown — especially all over Facebook — is very unnecessary. It's not even been confirmed it was drugs that killed her yet, even if it was very likely. And even if so, she was a very troubled person who also dabbled in self-harm, starvation, etc. A lot of people end up in situations like that and it's always saddening to see, often brought on by something emotionally crippling. Nobody means to end up as such a wreck.

Reminds me of how a lot of people immediately started calling Heath Ledger a drugged-up mother fucker immediately after his death, because the word 'drugs' was used in the reports of how he died. Except it turned out they were pharmaceutical drugs and suddenly everyone looked like assholes. Of course it's more likely to be drugs in Winehouse's case, but still.

In other news, this is kind of weird:

I've started a normal campaign few days ago and... it's a bit boring. I like the setting, graphics, characters but I feel like I'm wasting lots of time to travel

The travelling can get a little boring, although you do often encounter random events which help spice things up. However you might want to do what I did: buy a campfire from a shop, then you can teleport anywhere you like the same way you can use the taxis to get around in Grand Theft Auto. You can also pay to use the stagecoach things.

Batman Begins and Dark Knight were superb, cannot wait for what will certainly be an excellent ending to the trilogy.

However after Dark Knight Rises they're rebooting Batman again, this time making it more comic book-esque so they can make Batman share the universe with Superman, etc as in the comics.

Hey, D3 is MapCore's resident Eastern European enthusiast — respec'!

I think it's kind of fair to compare it to STALKER because it was probably a major source of inspiration being about as far as most people's familiarity with Eastern Europe actually goes, and aesthetically it does look very similar. There's a general perception that the area is permanently engulfed in foggy, overcast weather, which is STALKER's iconic look but one that isn't necessarily accurate.

Oh it's definitely all semantics, which is why it's important to use the right term in the right circumstances.

I don't think you can really describe something which is released completely standalone as a mod, that's what the term 'indie game' is used for because it's just that: an independent release. Whether it uses a pre-existing engine or not, it's released independently from any other game thus is a de facto full-blown game release. If we start labelling anything using an existing engine as a mod we'd have to start describing Mortal Kombat, Gears of War, Enslaved, and Mirror's Edge all as Unreal Tournament 3 mods.

A mod is something which out-and-out requires another game to be present for it to be playable. The exact mechanism of this can vary, from literally using the original game as the platform (ie: something which changes the core files) to some kind of system that allows games to be independently built on top of the original game's engine. However, it's the reliance on having that original game — whether it's purchased separately through Steam or bundled with the mod — that makes it a mod.

When I said modding is dead I didn't really mean in the sense that the practical industry of modding is dead — clearly modding always has been and always will be an invaluable way for people to develop professional skills, and that's in large part what MapCore is all about. What I meant was that modding as a way of successfully releasing a game is dead because nowadays mods just don't really take off, whereas indie games typically have much better chances even if they're not free.

Man I'm almost confusing myself re-reading the above. I am sorry.

When I say 'mod' I think 'modification or total conversion of an existing game which is required to play it'. When I say 'indie game' I think 'standalone game that can be enjoyed without relying on any other games being installed'. It can get blurry especially when it comes to Steam, but I think the general rule of thumb is that if you can get hold of the game without having to buy or install any other games it's an independent release.

modding, and expecting to hit the big times like the old days of cs and dod is pretty much over, especially as there are retail games that do everything better than a team of amatuers could do.

So true. One thing often forgotten is that back when things like TFC, CS, and DoD hit the big time there were no real alternatives — they were pioneers during a time when the industry itself didn't focus on multiplayer experiences so much beyond shitty deathmatch. It's no wonder people loved them because they were unique and getting the opportunity to play let alone work on such games was an incredibly exciting time. It was like taking those first steps into a new land, and those involved literally created a whole new country.

Since then the industry has learned absolutely everything from those early steps and has now turned churning out attractive multiplayer experiences into a tried-and-tested routine. There's hardly any point in trying to do a multiplayer mod nowadays because you're directly competing with massive studios doing exactly the same thing and who are very good at it.

Doing single-player mods would seem the logical answer as then you can craft something truly unique once again, however the sheer amount of work required for such a project is obscene and even then you're twatting yourself in the face by releasing as a mod because it means only a limited number of people will be exposed to it (ie: those who both have the game you're modding for and care about the mod scene, ie: not many people), whereas if you go full-blown indie you obviously have much better chances of getting exposure and sales. No fucker's going to waste time installing one game to play another nowadays.

Basically indie is the new modding. Modding is dead.
