Art direction you say..? It's just re-creating real-life with Uncharted, that doesn't really require too much direction...

Yeah, because a film shot by students with a consumer camcorder has the same artistic merit, composition, and direction as, say, The Shawshank Redemption. It's all real life, right?

I think the second coming of Christ is more likely than a Frostbite SDK any time soon.

Yeah Uncharted as a series has made the best use of colour (and general art direction) I can think of in recent history. I really have no worries whatsoever about the aesthetics, although I do see your point about those brown palm trees. Maybe they're just dead?

I love the air hangar type place, though. In most games a scene like that would be very dark and boring, but they've still made it look gorgeous and relatively colourful.

God... shit that looks good. Pretty much sums up in two minutes why Battlefield is the best thing ever. Blow after blow of awesomeness. You have to love the fact that all DICE have to do is show their game and it makes Call of Duty look like a bag of crap. Normally you have to explain so someone 'gets' it, but this... you'd be a dick to not be blown away by this.

Definitely pre-ordering as I didn't realise Gulf of Oman was included in the deal — can't miss out on that.

The only problem with that idea is it's very much done. The fact it's on a stock site should be an indication regarding how original/popular that kind of concept is.

As for vectors, Adobe Illustrator is really the way to go.

Haha, it does look good (though not at all like the Nuclear Dawn I remember) although the main feeling I had at the end was that I want a Natural Selection that takes place in a run-down city or something rather than a space station.

That's some pretty crazy stuff. I remember seeing something similar years back that was meant for taking 3D models of crime scenes, so it could all be examined later. I'm guessing this is something more consumer-orientated.

Sorry I didn't mean it like that. What I meant was that they're targeting OnLive's method of selling games, but not delivering them. It'll be straight-up digital distribution, but packaged in a subscription-based way (like rental) rather than actual purchases.

The impression I've gotten from commentary elsewhere is that it's more a competitor to OnLive — a PC service that lets you stream games from their datacentres and play loads of games at reduced/subscription rates — rather than, say, Steam and Origin. Quite a smart move as a lot of people seem to like the idea of being able to easily trial games or 'buy' them temporarily until they've finished them like OnLive lets you, but without the crappy quality and experience OnLive delivers for many people.

  • Best for game development: TN or IPS monitor?

    • Thrik
    • August 6, 2011 at 12:23 AM

I've not encountered a single TN that can touch the colour accuracy and general quality of my S-PVA monitor at home. My IPS screen at work is definitely superior still but the difference is nowhere near as 'whoa' as that between TN and S-PVA.

The only advantage TNs enjoy is a lack of latency, in every other respect they are vastly inferior — although a good TN is still going to seem amazing compared to a crappy average consumer TN.

I'm not at all against the inner lines above and think they work quite well. In fact I really like the last mock-up in general.

I'd go with what you feel looks best Jenn, as there is a point where design by committee can result in literally endless iterating — there has to be a cut-off point. With that said the lines do seem to be particularly divisive so it might be worth doing a final mock-up of both variations.

Notch brings up a similar thought that I had on watching the video: Even with each dot simply being coordinates and color, the "atom" density they're claiming would lead to absolutely enormous data sizes.

I think that's kind of the point of this technology isn't it? Floating point data is far from a new concept, it's their increasingly efficient algorithms for using that data without slowdown and huge amounts of overhead that're causing a stir — plus an proper SDK for pulling it all together.

I personally think this has a very good chance of being the future. At the moment there're naturally going to be countless naysayers who don't like the idea of having to change the status quo, but this technology is quite clearly better than the current approach. Things like LODing, pop-up, and having to waste huge amounts of time optimising for crappy hardware are suddenly no longer an issue. Detail can now be as sophisticated as you're capable of modelling.

Obviously the tools are nowhere near usable for making games, but the sheer amount of money going into this project tells me they're very serious about doing everything required to make it something developers can quite readily start experimenting with and ultimately embracing. Even since last year they've managed to get direct importing from 3D Studio Max or Maya implemented, meaning modellers hardly have to change what they do at all — apart from not having to spend ages trimming polies off that is. It's inevitable that similar bridges will be built for animation, audio, shaders, etc. They just need time.

The real question is: why fake it when you don't have to? That's a question developers will seriously start asking themselves in the near future IMO, especially as the prospect of jumping ahead five+ generations of graphics starts sinking in.

As you'll see from the first post the deadline has now been lifted entirely, although if things peter out for a number of days I'll call it to an end. With so much awesome creativity going on I'd hate to stifle it.

This whole competition has been much more than I was expecting, the number of superb concepts is overwhelming. I don't know how we're even going to figure this out, especially if we have an awesome logo and an awesome text design that aren't part of the same design. Fuck that shit for now, just keep creatin'!

I do really like the cell by the way, it is yet another great idea.

I'm a massive fan of the text design Thurnip's come up with. I'm now finding myself in a funny situation where I prefer one of the other logo's, but Thurnip's text is by far the best I've seen.
