I think it's fair to say that Battlefield 2142 by far contains the best rendition of the theme regardless of your feelings about the game itself.

I do like BF3's crazily distorted version, though. Rest of the soundtrack is nice, too. Although again I think BF2142 has the musical edge even though BF2 is a close second, they really were on fire doing the music for that game:

Battlelog is for the most part surprisingly sweet. The only thing I'm not so keen on is the fact that my web browser has to be sat running while playing, otherwise the game closes. It's not uncommon for me to have millions of tabs open for projects I'm in the middle of, etc and unfortunately these tabs each use up a considerable amount of RAM and sometimes even CPU depending on what's in them (Flash is a particular concern).

While I can control this myself to a degree by closing any unnecessary tabs when playing, it's an extra inconvenience I could do without. Also there must be a lot of people out their fucking up their performance by leaving crap open in tabs without realising the impact it can have.

As such I still think it would have been nice to have the option to launch the game traditionally and access all the Battlelog stuff via an in-game web browser that isn't connected to your regular-use browser, thus avoiding all of the above. Just like with Steam it could still be possible to access everything via a regular web browser.

Looks like I'm managing a steady 30–40 FPS with most things set to low/medium. I have no idea what post-processing AA is or whatever, but it seems to be quite magical in that it smooths everything without raping my FPS like the regular AA setting does.

This is with a Q6600 at 3GHz, 4GB of RAM, and a 4870 1GB. If I had to upgrade one of those what do you think would provide the most benefit in BF3 so I can have it run smoothly and look sweet? I'm thinking the GPU but then I'm not sure how much difference RAM makes nowadays. Also my budget is like £200 at most so I have no idea how far that'll go with a GPU nowadays.

I think only allowing effective knifing from behind is more realistic. If you were a soldier faced with someone coming at you with a knife IRL, you'd have little difficulty intercepting the jabs and probably even turning the knife against them (maybe this should be an option ). It's only when catching someone by surprise you're likely to actually kill someone.

Which is good because I fucking hated the way people would just bulldoze you in CoD, knowing all they have to do is sprint at you with their knife primed and they're likely to win the fight rather than, you know, using actual shooting skill and accuracy.

Man, game is amazing and runs surprisingly well on my shitheap using the automatic settings (can probably improve visuals a bit with minimal performance loss after tweaking).

Nice to see DICE's usual assortment of weird design choices and bugs are present. Binding remains a mildly laborious process (can't use scroll wheel to go through bindings quickly, how far down you are snaps back up after you set a key, can only set bindings while in a server which you're almost always auto-kicked from before you're finished and have to start again), and I also got the amusing bug below.

GTA4 was GTA, it executed the formula perfectly and actually a bit better than the previous games due to many refinements (particularly shooting) and technical improvements that made the sandbox gameplay more fun.

Granted I was disappointed like most that the epic scope of San Andreas was absent, but considering the far more intense level of detail in what was already a much bigger environment than GTA3 and Vice City put together it's not like they did bad. Sadly it was pretty much all urban city, and so I got very bored by the time I got to the third borough and never managed to complete it.

I am hoping we see more non-city environments in GTA5. That's the key thing that was missing from GTA4 for me because it added something really special to San Andreas having missions taking place in deserts, forests, mountains, etc rather than yet another city block. I think RDR has demonstrated quite nicely the engine can handle this feat.

Isn't the organised crime in GTA4 carried out by immigrants from the former Yugoslavia like Niko, not Russia?

No, Niko and his brother Roman are two immigrants caught up in a web of all sorts of bastards including the Italian mafia, Irish mobs, black gangbangers, and — primarily — the Russian mafia.

Bet this game just got 10x more appealing to D3.

Don't forget it was largely Team Bondi rather than Rockstar who developed it, so I'd imagine it was a revved-up version of the engine behind The Getaway?

Apparently the game will focus on the Russian mafia even more than GTA4 did, which already featured them quite heavily.

Yeah GTA4 did lack a bit for me, never to this day managed to finish it as by the time I got to the third borough it'd become so repetitive.

Taking a leaf out of San Andreas' book and featuring lots more out-of-city environments would do the trick I think.

Awesome. There's been a number of these kind of videos — hell I even made my own shitty live-action FPS using a camera tripod as a gun while at college — but this is by far the best I've ever seen.
