Yeah the lighting in the concept is really nice, although it's worth noting that the stuff in the foreground is much darker which really helps to add some depth to the scene. If you're planning on releasing this as stills rather than a playable arena I'd definitely look into getting that same kind of effect, where trees really close to the camera are dark. BTW if you do release this as media only, make a HD looping video with lovely ambient sounds, etc so people can absorb the atmosphere.

Monkey Island 2 actually used a really similar effect for most scenes (Any excuse to bring these classics up, right?!), it's a lovely way of framing a scene:

That video is excellent, and yes indeed I have tried a scoped 870MCS. Not particularly good with it as I get bummed in the gob if I encounter enemies close up.

Well a slight accuracy nerf while moving and slightly more recoil I can deal with. The weapon fills a void for me because I really don't get on with Engineer and Support's weapons due to their lack of long-range effectiveness, which is a pain as I only play big maps really.

Hmm. Sounds like all this fancy stuff could be expensive. Sounds good though! Say, have you ever considered slapping your face to the top of every page each year to secure funding?

I am sure the MapCore community would appreciate this solution. I've only heard good things about other sites doing this.

Haha, well MapCore did its first ever donation drive late last year which wasn't quite a Wikipedia-style plea at the top of every page, but it was a global announcement. The total actually ended up being about $700, thank you very much for that guys. That is the #1 reason I'm able to purchase the better software and hosting, as before everything came out my pocket which limited how much I could do without saving it up for a while.

I did share in the original thread how much I expected things to cost so this will keep things ticking for a while, but after about a year I would be delighted to do another donation drive if people are willing to help. I know how to do it properly now too so this time Google Checkout won't die in the middle of it haha. A lot of $10s add up quickly and it all goes back into the site, and I'm determined to show that this year with the stuff I've planned out.

As I'm sure you remember there was a donation drive recently which has helped a lot, and also some things have been figured out regarding the site's server that were holding back progression. So you're probably wondering what's going to be happening in 2012 with the Core, right?! I figured I'd quickly jot down the basics (most of this has been loosely mentioned in various threads and on IRC but not in one place). Also, I have been paying attention to the LinkedIn suggestions if you were wondering.

Moving to a dedicated server in Europe (imminent)

The forums have been hosted on a shared server in the US for quite some time, which has been an increasing struggle considering the traffic and size of the forum; this has caused downtime and performance issues, and made upgrading the forum unfeasible. It's now moving to a dedicated cloud node, and will be hosted in Europe as the majority of MapCore's users are based there. Despite this, performance should still be better for those in the US because it's one seriously tuned server.

Switching to new forum software (within a couple of months)

While phpBB is a lovely free option, it's fiddly in numerous ways and customisation is a pain. It also lacks a lot of features that make integrating additional features troublesome to put it lightly, and don't even get me started on the bots. As such, we're moving to commercial forum software which has many more features and is basically a better user experience in every way — even something as basic as embedding videos and pictures is far easier. This'll include a new design, and the debut of the new logo. As this new software has extensive provisions for other types of content this also opens the door for...

The return of original content and features

For a long time the forums have been little more than a forum. Properly bringing back challenges and the spotlight has been on the agenda for some time, and they're going to return better than ever. In addition, MapCore isn't going to become a news site but there is going to be much more in the way of original content such as opinion pieces, tutorials, making-of articles, and basically anything that the community wishes to contribute. This will be open to all members as well as including outside guests when possible, albeit with a certain degree of editorial control.

Other things I'm looking into are focusing more on the recruitment board, such as being more proactive about attracting recruiters and getting them posting here; having a community feed where members can add their personal sites' RSS feeds and have their latest updates show up in the sidebar; and of course putting together a small group of people primarily responsible for contributing and moderating articles. But this'll all be discussed later! :derp:

It's going to be an exciting year for MapCore, and while nothing will be done to compromise the awesome community that's been here for many years, it's going to be expanded in scope and there's going to be more here for people to get their teeth into — as well as to attract new members and make MapCore something that's less a hidden gem and more something people have great respect for far and wide due to the abundance of talent and great personalities that gather here.

I don't want to get into the things I've described much more than I have already because I'm still figuring details out, but if anyone has other things they've been itching to see on MapCore feel free to leave your thoughts below.

  • This is why NVidia is better than ATI

Interesting, although I'm not sure I want to see us go back to a time where some games looked different/better with an NVIDIA card and some better with an ATI card because of the agreements each had with publishers. It's a lot easier when choosing hardware if you know the game's going to look its best on both, and all you have to worry about is the price and performance.

It wasn't that big a jump on the 360. Is it because they use a different resolution or more the quality of the graphics?

Oh yeah, I forgot the sheriff was a woman haha — was trying to figure it out in my head. Yeah that bit was quite hard.

I think I said it in an older thread, but Alan Wake is a game I took a very long time to get through, about a year. The gameplay does get quite repetitive after a while and I had to split it up into chunks (about half a chapter at a time, maybe a full chapter at most) to not get fed up with it. When I finished though, I looked back at the game as a whole (it does speed up towards the end) and thought "that was fuckin' awesome". I recall the narrative getting a bit more cool later on, too.

It's a shame they couldn't nail some of the gameplay a bit better as I think some more varied enemies and ways of dealing with them would have made a huge difference. I guess that's fairly common with survival games, though.

Can't think where you mean really. There was one bit where you have to get through a tunnel full of smashed-up cars (bit like in HL2 on the coast) and that took me about a million tries. Can you lower difficulty dynamically in this game?

You mean you're not familiar with my Schafer fan sites? grimfandango.net / psychonauts.net / brutallegend.net

Mojo is the 'parent' of all those and has been knocking around for well over a decade now, I only really get involved with news and technical stuff though. You should check out the retrospective articles put back up recently, they're awesome if you ever played any of the LucasArts' classic adventure games (I know you did Pogo ). Interviews with all the old soundtrack composers, artists, writers, etc.
