Yeah MGS is some sublime shit. Going to do a marathon myself soon, although not sure how to challenge myself as I've beaten them all on extreme.

MGS1 is unfortunately not part of the HD collection — crazy as its story pretty much sets up everything and is needed to fully understand the others — but if you have a GameCube or Wii lying around you should try and get MGS: Twin Snakes for it which is a remake of MGS1 they did roughly when MGS3 came out.

Its graphics are pretty much on par with MGS2/MGS3 and it's really faithful to the original, I've played both versions billions of times and there's not much that's different apart from the cutscenes being a bit more fancy (the script is identical) and the gameplay including MGS2's refinements. I honestly can't recommend Twin Snakes enough for those who missed out on MGS1 because unlike the original it holds up really well when played today, even if not HD (hopefully the Wii U will have a HD re-release). It'd have been a perfect addition to the HD pack but I think legal issues stopped it.

Really nicely put together, clearly a love letter to the old fans. Uses the original theme, features mostly the dark kind of of environments we remember from before, and I personally found a few parts of it really evoked memories of certain scenes in the originals (chopper over the city, blood stain along the wall). Totally hot for this game now.

When it came out the score was considerably lower and it was given a 'rotten' on RT as most critics seemed to dislike it. Fortunately word of mouth has saved it.

I know what Sentura means, although I think it's largely because I spend most of my time watching films generally regarded as good — I don't waste my time watching movies I suspect will be shit. I don't just base it on reviews though, for example Taken had pretty poor reviews yet I loved the fuck out of it, as did most people who recommended it to me.

Yeah, it's best not to see the list as a conclusive 'these are the best films in the order they are good' kind of thing as that's never going to happen — especially when never films having much more bias due to lots more people being drawn to their IMDB pages and consequently rating them. It's a good page to reference when you're looking for some cool movies to watch and nothing more.

Up is splendid, though. I know everyone said it but it really did make me shed a tear, and any film that manages that sticks in my memory. Plus I thought the whole thing was really enjoyable while kind of deeply unsettling at the same time. Unusual but good film IMO.

It was good, very good in fact but better than Apocalypse Now?!! I'm one of those that considers AN to be overrated and I still wouldn't even say this touches it. I was disappointed that

    I'd give it 8/10

I was very happy with the villain as his performance was absolutely splendid in Thor and he deserved to be expanded upon. Also he of course had the backing of an entire army of assholes, not to mention Thanos being revealed right at the end who as I understand it is essentially a titan/ultra-powerful god. If they were to have had a whole assortment of enemies I think they'd have risked it feeling a little bit silly and contrived, whereas this felt like a team put together out of necessity because the foe was so strong (Otherwise why not just have Iron Man deal with it?).

Of course, thanks to all the other films and their upcoming sequels I think we'll probably find that when a new Avengers film happens it'll include reappearances of villains we've seen before. I'm still pretty gutted that Red Skull was so underused and given such an anticlimatic ending in Captain America, but he didn't actually die in that film — so I'm sure they could write in his return.

Wow, love those The Willows night shots. Splendid atmosphere, I think forest environments like that are really difficult to get right but your use of volumetrics or whatever really hits the spot. Some Alan Wake-esque use of spot lighting would have really be hot.

My god you made Glider?? I still play Dod 1.3 every now and then, I remember when I first bought it, I thought life couldn't get any better.

Haha, unfortunately no. I was very involved with the pre-Source DoD mapping community though and especially iNvasion Works who were behind many of DoD's better maps including Glider. Fuzzdad allowed myself and some others like Klein to test the earliest versions of Glider; we made short work of exploiting the hell out of a func_moveable box and spent like a whole evening getting it into all sorts of ridiculous places. Good times, haha.

I still say to this day that the original flag capture version of the map was far better than the objective version that became an official map — had a significantly different layout. Fortunately Fuzzdad was touched by our moveable box efforts and asked me to make this:

In certain versions of the official map there's a hidden race track that can be teleported into with a number of moveable boxes to race round a ring. So many good memories of the old DoD community, only one I've loved equally has been MapCore.

Found this classic piece of mine from 2002. Many people were looking forward to it on the official Day of Defeat forums but alas I was never able to quite pull it through to completion.

Does anyone remember the 'competitor' to InvasionWorks that was around back then? Pretty sure a number of ancient MapCorians were part of it. Maybe Klein remembers.

I only got a few missions into the original but I was pretty much blown away by it, being an improved and more story-focused take on the Dawn of War formula which at that point was the best RTS I'd ever played. Unfortunately my machine was ass so I never managed to get through it.

This seems like a really great move. Obviously the kind of artists on MapCore who enjoy pushing a game and engine to its limits are probably going to be less excited than your average dudes who might have some wonderful Portal puzzle ideas but lacks what it takes to turn them into nice, working levels; but it's a great step for keeping the Portal 2 community going and adding a whole other side to the experience.

And best of all, as generalvivi says it might even get people into level design the same way Valve's earlier games and mods did — which in today's increasingly complicated world of game development is only a good thing.

All these fantasy MMO type things kind of look alike to me. Sounds like a fairly logical step considering the intense popularity of the franchise, although that may sacrificing some of its strengths that it's always had over MMOs (ie: a more structured story and significant events).
