I know there's a small bit of light bleeding under the walls in the prison section, its on my to-do list

Looking good mate! I think adding it a bit of vegetation (Other than palm trees) would bring it to a whole new level of beauty!

I love the waterfall btw, It looks even better than the ones in Crysis. Is it a particle? A plane with some kind of special shader? Or...?

Thanks I have made some vegetation i havent put much of it in there yet though, its only small shrubs and plants though :\ As for the waterfall it's a static mesh with the water flowing down it, there's a steam emitter at the top and a few at the bottom, as well as some emitters for the spray that comes off it, so as you cross the bridge its spraying all over you. Its all Epics work i just nicked it

I'll assume you think it should be It's all WIP.

EDIT: Updated it with some lighting changes to the water. I wanted to have some kind of transparancy to the water where it meets cliffs and land but transparancy + fog cant be done apparantly. Any better though?

    Hey!

Your buildings and architecture look fanatastic, but the terrain could do with some work. Your waterfall looks repetitive verticlly, like strings of plastic. Maybe this is just because it is a picture but I would suggest adding a few more emitters and a few more water planes to your water. The cliff going into the water seems to go straight into the waterv when instead it should slowly incline into the water, probably having some sand around the edges and rocks/debris stuck around the edges.

The dungeon is pretty cool, I would suggest you bump up the lighting quality on the terrain, http://%7boption%7d. The beams and hooks for the chains seem to just go straight into the wall, I would expect somthing like clay and offset rocks aroung them. Some fog layers and spiderwebs could look really neat down here.

    Keep it up!

Thanks, firstly the waterfall does just look like that when static, there's emitters set up on it for steam and splashes at the top and bottom and spray that comes over the rope bridge as you run across, so that's all fine in game trust me The cliff itself you could be right about, however i'm working towards a strict deadline for university so i can't change things like that now, when i actually get round to releasing the map it will be revamped first and therell be a lot more added, which will also involve splitting the level up into sections, so i'll consider changing that then, as well as improving the prison section. As for the terrain lighting, that's also fine, i've read the Hourences guides and the lightmap resolution on it is actually probably higher than it should be! Thanks for the comments

Finally finished this project, at least, its ready for university hand-in but not yet ready for download or anything. Thanks to this level and the fact that i was showing it at a recent university event i was approached by companies such as Midway, Black Rock, Bizarre Creations and a few more about potential jobs after university, so i guess it's all been worth it Thanks to everyone who helped me out on these boards, much appreciated

EDIT: These shots are taken in-editor..in game shots coming soon

Very nice man, looks epic, I love the sun rays

I'm not sure about the water, can't really put my finger on it but it must look a lot better ingame. Don't know if you are ever touching this again but some moss on top of those rocks surrounding the village would be pretty nice.

What are you studying by the way? Is it a game design course or an arts one?

Thanks, yeah the water and waterfall are things that have to be seen in motion really, i'm pretty happy with them in game. As for the moss on the rocks, that would look good yeah, unfortunately i took some of those rocks from Epic so i cant really change anything about them. I guess i could make my own, we'll have to see how it all pans out. I will be coming back to this after i finish my other university modules and ill be adding to and re-arranging it all into a playable map rather than a visual demo. My course at university is a games art one mainly, it covers things like 3D Modelling, animation etc...not level design though sadly but they let me submit this as a final piece as it contains modelling

wow that must be a nice feeling, all these companies getting in touch with you ^^

there's two things that really are a letdown for me on the map.

first thing doesn't really say anything about the map's quality, but the images you posted - all of them are so sucky compressed. why don't you take proper pics with nice antialiasing, or at least scale the screens down and resharpen slightly. i don't know it's just something that bothers me, cause i took all the screens and put them in photoshop just to see with these things, and i think it adds a lot to the presentation quality.

second thing - i don't like the lighting at all. it looks so bland and grey. i don't know i don't get a caribbean feeling, no dangerous pirate feeling no feeling at all. it could be more blue/orange, or whatever - i don't know, i just find it sad, cause i think it takes away of your hard work, that the lighting doesn't match up the quality of the rest. and i think that's something you could've tweaked a lot, imo

cause level design and modeling wise it looks reaaally sweet - lighting just doesn't do it for me :/ sry to say that

just some things you may keep in mind on your next project together with the rest of the crits in the thread

edit: yeh i seen the editor axis on the shots, just was sayin, that you could spend some 30 seconds and shrink/resharpend them a bit - looks much nicer presentation-wise - imo

Thanks for the comments...i actually like the way the lighting came together, theres a lot of lights affecting the scene so it was quite complicated to put it all together, i'm happy with the results though. I was going for realistic rather than overblown (well except the sun rays) so this is maybe why it doesn't stand out enough for you i don't know. Obviously this is my first level using the new editor so maybe i'll look back on it after working with the engine some more and agree with you. The image compression is like that as they are pictures taken in the editor, not in game

Hey PaulH, congrats for the job offerings man! that should prove to your self the awesome work your making!

the in-game shots looks bright alright, maybe some kind of exaggerated readings of HDR/Bloom values? try to mess with it a bit.

Thanks, i probably won't have time to fit birds in there though as it'd involve actually making them afaik. Will be something i'd like to do for the final version though when i get round to completing that after uni
